DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

Welcome to Lend Me a Tenor, the opening production in the 2012-2013 Shorewood High School Drama Season!

Once again, SHS Drama has selected a challenging season of theatre for your enjoyment. Following Lend Me a Tenor, the year will continue in February with Godspell, a powerful and timeless musical about love, compassion, and forgiveness. In March, students’ talents really take center stage with Showcase 2013. Finally, the year will conclude with what will likely be a high school world-premiere, the Tony Award Winning musical Spring Awakening.

The students have been thrilled to work on tonight’s production. Ken Ludwig’s farce, Lend Me a Tenor, is theatrical comedy at its best. In 1989, the play was nominated for nine Tony Awards and won in the categories of Best Actor and Best Director. The play, though fun to rehearse, has been an amazing amount of work for the students. With its difficult comic timing, extremely physical demands, and quick, witty retorts, it has been a blast to produce. The technical crews have been hard at work to create a realistic 1930’s hotel suite.

I was lucky enough to have directed this show once before, in 1999, at my previous Indiana high school, and it was such a smashing success, that I knew the Shorewood community would enjoy it as well.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Shorewood community for such a warm welcome to your district. I understand that I follow a long tradition of theatrical excellence under Mrs. Barb Gensler’s direction, and I hope to pick up where she left off so that the tradition stays alive and well. Finally, thank you for your support. Arts educa-tion is vibrant in Shorewood School District. Thank you for being an ambassador for arts education in our public schools! Enjoy Lend Me a Tenor!
