Leishmania Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania type. It is found worldwide, and is considered to be endemic in 88 countries, with more than 350 million people at risk of infection. The number of people infected with the disease is around 14 million people. Sandflies are the only vector species for leishmaniasis.
