MICK KNIGHT : R. I. P.
EDITORIALIt is with great sadness I write my Editorial this month with not one but two obituaries. The first is that of Dennis Naylor, Entertainment Secretary for about 4 years at Melton Royal British Legion. Dennis, who had been fighting malignant melanoma for around 3 years, passed away early in October. I attended his funeral where I learned a few things, especially about his love for his pets, in particular his 2 parrots Charlie and Millie, and that is why I have never seen a coffin like it before.....it was covered in pictures of parrots, very fitting for a man who stood his ground. Dennis would always attend Ent Sec meetings and stay to the end of all the shopwindows. He also attended many shows (something most of the local Ent Secs don’t do) bearing in mind, whatever the weather, he would travel into the city etc. from Melton every month! Dennis, I’m told, was also a very good and keen fisherman! Dennis always had his club at heart. When he was sorting out decent entertainment for his club, in most cases he would watch acts before he engaged them. He will be missed by many. Our prayers and thoughts are with his wife Carol and the family. God bless you Dennis. The second is the talented artiste Michael
Knight, Mick to his friends, I was totally gobsmacked when I received a phone call from Carl, telling me his mum had received a phone call from Mick’s mum (who herself is very poorly in hospital at the moment) saying Mick had passed away that morning! At this I rang Mick’s wife Charlene, who of course was in bits, and confirmed the news, I went straight around to the family house; I’ve known Mick around 25 years, and have worked with him many, many times, an act who pleases most people. I have also known Charlene for around 40 years. I had the pleasure of doing the disco at their wedding twenty-one years ago at the T. U. L. on Catherine Street. John Darrell was best man! Mick was always at the Latimer on Tuesday nights playing snooker with John Smith and, not a lot of people are aware, but Mick and I sang together on 2 occasions when he was booked at 2 private parties and I was booked to do the discos at the White House, Scraptoft, we did about 40 minutes as a duo and we both enjoyed entertaining the party. Mick too was a very keen fisherman, he used to have his own tackle and bait shop! I could write for hours about Mick, one thing or another!! Mick you were taken far too soon, you leave so many great memories for your family and many, many friends R.I.P. Mick, a man I was proud to have known. P.S. Here are a few of the many tributes and kind words from entertainers, Ent Secs, landlords/landladies etc., a very popular entertainer who will be missed in many venues such as Black Horse Blaby, Napier, Axe & Square Countesthorpe, Crows Nest, Fountain, Plough Loughborough, Blue Bell, Saffron Lane, Thurmaston PWMC. Birstall RBL. Latimer, West End, Braunstone Vic, Newfoundpool, The Glen, these are a few of the many venues Mick worked (sorry if I didn’t mention yours).December material to be with me no later than 7th November please to D. MICK KNIGHT R.I.PIt was such a shock to me that the hugely popular local vocalist Mick Knight is no longer with us. I knew him for over 20 years, and booked him several times in all three clubswhere I was Ent. Sec. and also saw him regularly at other venues, the last of which was at Saffron Lane WMC earlier on this year. He has appeared and gone down well in just about every club in Leicestershire along with numerous pubs in the area. He was always only too pleased to sing on Charity Shows and won many Best Of Leicester Awards over the years that were richly deserved. I have three personal standout memories of Mick that will stay with me forever. One night at Great Wigston WMC, guitar vocalist, the late Rob Mullaney was on, Mick had a rare night off so came to see him. He asked me what was the addition on the stage, there was a table with a beermat and an ashtray on it. I said it was for Rob, to make him feel more relaxed on stage Mick said “that’ll do for me” and later on in the year when he was on, the table, beermat and ashtray made another appearance. Again at Great Wigston, I booked Mick along with the band Index on New Years Eve. They decided to come to the club together at lunchtime to get set up. Having done so they had a drink before setting off home. After they’d finished their drink they said ”we’ll have one more then we’ll go”, well they said this another five or six times before eventually staggering out of the door. I was at home fretting wondering how they would sing and play on the night. I needn’t have worried, they both performed a blinder. When I was at Wigston RBL, I had booked both Mick and Carl Stevens on separate Fridays one year. The first one when Mick was on, I got to the club and Carl was setting his kit up. I told him that he wasn’t on it was Mick, Carl informed me that Mick wasn’t very well so arranged for Carl to step in as he didn’t want to let me down. Later in the year, the reverse happened, Carl was bad so Mick covered his gig, so I still had both on, just the other way round. I told both of them I was disappointed and they took it as it was meant....a joke. Mick was a proper bloke who was loved by his audiences and peers and will be sadly missed. Steve Rushin
I write this today with a great sadness, earlier today I learned that Mick Knight passed away suddenly at the age of 51 after a heart attack. Mick had been a singer in the local clubs and pubs for about 30 years. I had known him for most of that time but after getting married I lost contact, it was only in May 2013 that I regained that contact. Many of you saw me at his gigs in the last 17 months usually helping pack his kit up at the end of the night..... Mick was well respected on the circuit and as I have said in previous writeups he was a fantastic singer as well as being a lovely gentleman. Mick was one of a kind and a friend and will be sorely missed by myself and a lot of people. R.I.P. Mick, my thoughts are with his loved ones xx Lisa
Mick Knight's talent shone bright as a suit of armour, always the gentleman. So sad to lose one of Leicester's foremost entertainers at such an early age, now singing with angels. Always remembered and thank you very much for the compliments. Sincere condolences to the family. Steve Dean
A great artist who will be sadly missed by Committee & Members at the RBL Birstall
Karen Comery - Birstall RB.L.The world of entertainment has lost a truly great singer in Mick Knight! Always there with a smile, and kind words, it has been a privilege to know you - Mick, I miss you my friend - R. I. P.
Paul RavelWe are very sad to hear about the passing away of Mick Knight, Mick entertained us for many years at Newfoundpool and was a very popular singer, he will be missed, a true professional. Our sympathies to Mick's family and friends.

Ask anyone who knows a bit about Clubland to name a person who gave his all and made a big impact on club life, and they will say Peter Glynn. I had a conversation with Peter a couple of weeks ago and he told me that, along with his dad Syd Glynn, they did 70 years service at ‘The Manny’,The Manchester Club; Syd serving 40 years and Peter doing 30 years. Peter was also the original editor of Club News, and his dad Syd, apart from serving The Manny, had many years treading the boards as an entertainer and dancer. Whilst on the subject of The Manny and entertainment, every Saturday evening they put on a full concert usually employing 3 different acts plus a backing duo, and also the real top act, Mr. Bingo!. Syd and Peter Glynn, two real top gentlemen when it comes to entertainment in Leicester. As I suppose most of you readers know, the Club News has been going for, at least I think, 45 years, and the Editors are as follows, Peter Glynn, Trev Charles, Alan Wilkes and now top bloke Dave Rollason. Alan Wilkes took it on briefly between myself and Dave as he was also Ent Sec at the at the superb Belgrave Liberal Club. Also at The Lib everyone must remember the singing traffic warden, Fred Ward, a brilliant laid back type of vocalist (Spanish Eyes) who put on his own shows at The Liberal, and he also booked the acts for the Police Social Club in Charles Street. Another very good singer was Fred’s sister, Sheila Kaye, who did many years on the clubs, and also a friend of Sheila’s and Fred’s, Margaret Wilson, another good singer. The Ent Sec at The Lib before Alan Wilkes was Stan Grimley, another guy who knew what he was doing when it came to engaging artistes. The main backing organist at The Lib was Brian Barnes, helped along with a drummer and sometimes a bass player. If Brian couldn’t make any particular concert he had a good stand in by the name of Graham and he always did well. Again this club used to put on top concerts, ably compered by Fred Ward, so lots of work for the Ent Sec.Go across the other side of town and a fabulous club by the name of Saffron Lane. Another club with a superb concert room ran by Ent Sec Bert Ricketts, and later on Joe Taylor. They too put on shows in the lounge for people that liked the gentler side of entertainment. Concert room shows were very well organised by the chairman, I think I remember Spracko, and the backing for the solo acts was provided admirably by Monica and Ivan. Also just up the road was the Aylestone & District club. A big club usually full at weekends for the shows. I can remember competing in a top talent contest at the Big Aylestone and coming in second to Fred Ward, but it had rewards as I got a full weeks booking at the Heart of the Midlands in Nottingham (it is now called Rock City), supporting that top television star at the time, Leslie Crowther. I did 7 nights for the princely sum of £100, less agents fees, less travelling to Nottingham every night. Big money! On the subject of agents there were quite a few that operated round this area, such as Worldwide, and the very polite Mr. John Newman, the Johnny Jalland agency, who was also a guitar vocalist, Paul Kaye agency, run by Bill Scorer, Lawrence Wheeler, Mainline, and a local agency run by Jack Osbourne, who I think briefly was Ent Sec at the Scrappy Valley, although I may be wrong. I have probably missed a few but the agency I think was the top one is Dukeries Agency located near to Mansfield. The boss of Dukeries was a great bloke by the name of John Bridges, who has now retired and is living a good life in Malta. When I used to do gigs out in the Notts/Derbys area I always hoped that John Bridges was backing me as he was one of the top keyboard players in that area. Dukeries is still thriving with Tanya now being the boss, plus Charlie and Carol doing the admin. Trev Charles to be continued.

Dear Editor, I enjoyed Trev Charles’ journey down Memory Lane. Looking back at the 1960/70's I recall accompanying two beautiful young ladies, Dianne Lane and Elaine Lesley,
with equally beautiful voices. Both were Leicester based and both were top class vocalists who knew exactly what they wanted from the booking. They were both excellent musical time keepers, which for a drummer, was a God send! For me it was always a pleasure to accompany them both. Royston Beaumont was an exceptional organist who wrote most of the musical scores for the two girls. Roy and I started at the Boot and Shoe Club on the same evening. We had a regular show on Radio Derby where we played jazz!! Happy times! Elaine is pictured left, Dianne on the right. Rod Bates (former drummer)
THE ELMS SOCIAL AND EX-SERVICE CLUBThis will be my last writeup for the club as I have recently resigned as Ent Sec. I have thoroughly enjoyed my second stint here of almost 3 years but I feel that it’s now time for a break. I’d like to thank all of the acts who have worked for me during this period giving us many memorable nights. Coventry male duo 2 Of Us made a welcome return to the club just in time for my birthday, playing some top 60's sounds including songs by The Beatles, The Kinks Them and The Searchers. Following them saw an act with a difference, male duo Double XL who entertained and worked really hard all night with a lot of leaping about and some comedy. The last act who appeared while I was Ent Sec were female duo Birdheart. These two young sisters sing great, both individually and in unison, bringing my days to a close in superb fashion. CHARITY NIGHT (in aid of MESOTHELIOMA)
Friday 29th August at Eyres Monsell W.M.C.Art ists appearing:-Compere & vocal ist - Steve Sinatra, Nicola Lovel l , Gemma, Rich Wayne. The original line up of artistes due to appear was not as above due to illness or other factors. However a very good night was had by all, with around 70 people still in the club at 12.00pm. The artistes who did appear turned the night into a success. Steve Sinatra was his usual terrific self giving around an hours entertainment; and Nicola Lovell was in top form doing a very good solo performance, and then did around half an hour duet with her daughter Gemma who has also come on leaps and bounds. Last but not least, Rick Wayne did a super job with songs from Buble, The Rat Pack etc. I would like to thank all for making the night great. A total of £427.10 was raised for the Charity. Thanks to the Eyres Monsell W.M.C. for the use of the concert room . Mick Welsh
Like many other pubs and clubs we put on a show to commemorate the 100years of our service men and women. The stage was set with a screen showing old newsreels from both wars. Then the very lovely Karen West opened the show, dressed in a uniform with three stripes.and took us back in time with lots of great tunes, which had everyone singing along. Also we had Terrys Old Gold who did songs and funny monologues, with raffle and bingo, a great free show on a Wednesday night. Keep on supporting your local venues!
