Ever since it was founded in 1932, the LEGO Group hasfocused on quality in everything it does. To the LEGO Group, quality means product quality and ethical values of a highstandard. These matters establish a relationship of trustbetween consumer and company. The trust that the outsideworld displays towards the LEGO Group has been achieved byrefusing to compromise on quality - whether product qualityor responsibility towards employees, customers, suppliers, consumers or the local environment.

LEGO Group's new policy on quality "Our aim at the LEGO Group is to exceed customerexpectations with regard to our products, service and theirexperience of the LEGO brand.

Quality is firmly rooted in our fundamental beliefs, ourmission statement, our strategic goals and our values.

As a world leader in the field of quality experience, service and products, we focus on the customer'sperception of quality.

Quality procedures are specified in our global quality management system.

We view the implementation of this policy as the shared responsibility of all LEGO employees."

LEGO Group aims to lead on quality One of the LEGO Group's declared aims is to be the best in all areas of business in which thecompany participates. At a very minimum, play material from the LEGO Group must satisfy allnational and international toy standards.

Apart from official regulations, we aim to ensure that all LEGO products meet the expectations ofquality and safety that consumers can reasonably demand of design, play patterns and foreseeableuse.

As a further requirement, the LEGO Group has opted to ensure that its products not only satisfy thestandards for plastics used in making toys but also the regulations that govern food packaging - plusmeet a series of specific requirements for the properties of the raw materials. The company has a development laboratory for plastics materials and a test laboratory in Denmark.

The LEGO Group uses primarily ABS plastics in the manufacture of its products. This ABS materialhas been specially developed for our company and is not available to others. This has importantconsequences: for example, no other manufacturer is able to make products with the same uniqueclutch power, shine properties and colour stability as LEGO Group products possess. The company'slaboratories continuously test our plastics to the extreme in order to improve resistance, for example,to bite marks and scratching.

All LEGO play materials carry the EU CE symbol. The symbol means that the LEGO Group guaranteesthat the product complies with the European Toy Directive. Products manufactured for the Americanmarket must satisfy the Code of Federal Regulation and ASTM standard F963.

The LEGO Group is a member of both TIE (Toy Industries of Europe) and TIA (Toy Industries ofAmerica), and chairs the European committee for standardisation of toy safety. Through TIE and theEuropean standardisation committee, CEN, the LEGO Group is actively engaged in defining toystandards which can promote safety in the toy sector.

You can read more about how the LEGO Group works with toy quality and safety in our SustainabilityReport.

Code of ConductThe LEGO Group does business in a responsible way. We seeit as our responsibility to ensure that our vendors actionscomply with our high standards. As early as 1997 the LEGOGroup drew up a set of guidelines - a Code of Conduct -outlining what it expected of itself and of its vendors. Thereason for defining the Code was that vendors in manycountries regrettably fail to ensure compliance with ILO andother conventions. The LEGO Group's Code of Conduct istherefore in several respects stricter than the generalstandard observed in many of our vendor countries.

The LEGO Group requires all of its vendors to give a writtenassurance that their vendors, too, comply with the LEGOGroup's Code of Conduct.

LEGO Groups Code of Conduct covers: Child labourCompensation and working hoursDiscriminationCoercion and harassmentForced and compulsory labourHealth and safetyFreedom of associationThe environmentAnti-Corruption

Monitoring visitsThe Code of Conduct is an integral part of the contract the LEGO Group signs with all vendors whomanufacture LEGO products or components and parts for such products and licensees' vendors. Inother words, they give a written undertaking that they will comply with the LEGO Group's Code ofConduct and that the LEGO Group is entitled at any time to make inspection visits.

If there are conditions which do not meet the LEGO Group's requirements, the vendor must draw upan action plan with the assistance of the LEGO Group in which a timetable for corrections is included. This is combined with a follow up visit to check whether conditions have improved. Through acombination of action plans and follow up visits, the LEGO Group helps to secure a program ofsteady improvement in the working conditions of its vendors.

The LEGO Groups Code of Conduct will continuously be updated, please find the latest version underthe link below.ChineseCzechDanishEnglishGermanHungarianSpanish

ICTI CARE ProcessIn the LEGO Group we consider ourselves responsible andcaring with an urge to behave decently in every situation. The LEGO Group joined the ICTI CARE Process in order totake part in solving major social issues that face the worldtoday. The ICTI CARE Process is an initiative of the International Council of Toy Industries, and it isan ethical manufacturing program with the purpose of ensuring fair labour treatment and safeworking conditions. For this purpose a Code of Business Practice has been developed by ICTI, whichour vendors are obligated to follow.

We are very positive about being a part of the ICTI CARE process, and we support this programbecause we believe it is possible to achieve fair labour treatment and safe working conditions, at thevendors, when groups work together towards the same target. Vendors who meet the requirementsreceive a Seal of Compliance.

The LEGO Groups Code of Conduct is affecting all vendors but for toy vendors the ICTI program is ademand. At the moment the ICTI program (CARE) is covering factories in China, Hong Kong andMacau, however, we have recently planned to start cooperation in Europe and will be committed assoon as it is possible in Europe.

    Responsible Manufacturing

As a global leader in the toy industry, we believe that how we achieve success is just as important as the success itself. We strive to ensure that our toys and licensed products are manufactured in a responsible and ethical manner, and we havecontinued to evolve our standards and oversight process to reflect those expectations for labor practices and environmentalstewardship.

Launched in 1997, Mattel's Global Manufacturing Principles (GMP) represents the company's ongoing commitment toresponsible manufacturing around the world. Mattel's GMP have remained some of the most detailed and comprehensivestandards in the consumer products industry by addressing a spectrum of social compliance issues, from employee healthand safety, environmental management and ensuring that employees are treated fairly and with respect, to the cultural, ethnic and philosophical differences of the countries where Mattel operates. Independent monitoring was launched in 1997to evaluate compliance with GMP. For more than a decade the Sethi International Center for Corporate Accountability(ICCA), conducted independent audits of Mattel owned-and-operated facilities in all countries where we manufacture toys,as well as vendors, and publicly reported its findings.

In 2009, Mattel transitioned its social responsibility independent audit program to the toy industry's ICTI CARE Process(ICP). The ICP is the product of an approach that Mattel has long supported, and through the ICP, the toy industry is workingtogether to address social compliance issues and improvements at factories that make toys. The ICP is based on a code ofethical operating practices similar to GMP. Designed to promote safe and just working conditions in toy factories around theworld, the ICP provides toy companies with a unified approach to responsible manufacturing, promoting safe and humaneworkplace environments. Find more information about responsible manufacturing practices across the toy industry:International Council of Toy Industries.

    Sustainability

Mattel's sustainability strategy is focused on helping the company minimize its footprint throughout the value chainfromdesign to manufacturing through disposal of products and waste, and illustrates the importance of personal commitment inbusiness and everyday practices.

Design it with the end in mind. Historically, our sustainability efforts have focused on the manufacturing process, but we recognize that opportunity also lies in how we design our products and packaging.Make it with eco-efficiencies. Beyond design, we are always exploring opportunities to gain efficiencies and reduceenvironmental impacts through the manufacturing and distribution of our products.Live it with personal commitment. Fostering a culture of sustainability begins with personal commitment, and manyof our sustainability activities are employee-inspired grassroots initiatives.

Through this strategic approach, the company is able to continually find ways to minimize the companys impact on theenvironment and implement policies and procedures that support these efforts to "re-imagine the way we play."

    2007 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP REPORT

    Dear Stakeholders,

For more than six decades, Mattel toys have been bringing joy to the lives of children, many of whomhave since become parents, even grandparents, and are now introducing our toys to their children.Throughout the years, Mattel also has grown and changed; however one thing remains constant: ourcommitment to creating safe, high quality and innovative toys in a responsible and ethical manner. This includes the ongoing commitment to fair treatment of manufacturing workers, minimizing ourenvironmental impacts and delivering high-quality products our consumers trust.

This, our third Global Citizenship Report, explains the evolution of our efforts, including the creation ofa Corporate Responsibility organization that reports directly to me. We believe that making CorporateResponsibility an independent function will ensure greater accountability and oversight of our productquality, social compliance and environmental commitments.

Toy safety has been and will continue to be the highest priority at Mattel. Over the years, we haveearned a reputation as an industry leader, which made the voluntary recalls in 2007 all the moredisappointing for us. Yet, we are proud of the way in which we responded by taking immediate andunprecedented action to communicate globally. I told our employees that through challenging timescomes the opportunity to be betterand I believe that we did become a stronger and better companybecause of that experience.

Since the release of our last report, Mattel has received several honors for our global citizenshipefforts. In 2009, Mattel is listed in the top 10 of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens, is ranked one ofthe Worlds Most Ethical Companies and has been named for the second consecutive year toFORTUNE Magazines list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. These honors speak directly tothe heart of Mattels culture and the values shared by our employees around the world.

As this report is being released, the global economy continues to face headwinds, the effects ofwhich are being felt by people around the world and in almost every facet of the business sector, including Mattel. Despite the rigors of the current economic climate, I want to assure you that we willnot depart from our core values or compromise how we do business. There are, however, financialrealities that require us to explore more efficient ways to implement these programs, and our peopleare focused on identifying resourceful and creative means to do so.

I hope that the information in this report helps you gain a better understanding of Mattel and whatsimportant to us. As we move ahead, we will continue to seek opportunities for open dialogue with ourstakeholders and communicate our progress and challenges through ongoing reporting andtransparency. In the meantime, please share your feedback with us at [email protected] tell us whats important to you.
