Lego-MAn Shadow Challenge: Teacher instructions

I put kids into partners for this activity. That way one student can trace the shadow while the other student holds the flashlight.

Materials you will need for each partnership:• One paper clock• One set of sun challenge cards• Two written response sheets. (they are doubled up so they will just need to cut it in half and give one to each

person)• One flashlight• One Lego-Man or person or really anything that can stand in the center of the clock. The kids loved using the Lego

people in the center of the clock. • Pencil

This activity took about 30-45 minutes from start to finish. I included a word bank so that students could focus their writing using academic vocabulary.

Lego-MAn Shadow Challenge

Step 1: Pick out a Lego-Man or Woman and put the Lego Person in the center of the paper clock.

Step 2: Cut out the challenge sun cards

Step 3: Read the challenge sun card and use the flashlight to create a shadow on that specific time mentioned in the challenge card. For example: “Create and trace a shadow at 9:00 on the clock.” Using the Lego-Person in the center, point the flashlight using different angles to create a shadow that occurs at the 9 on the paper clock.

Step 4: Paste this challenge sun card on the paper clock exactly where you held the flashlight.

Step 5: Repeat this process for all 5 challenge sun cards.

Step 6: After all suns are pasted on the paper clock. Fill out the writing for understanding reflection sheet. Make sure to use all the words that are required in your writing .
