Top 5 Tips for using LEGO® Education in Early Childhood Settings – By Luke Touhill1. MAKE LEGO® EDUCATION AN EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE

When children have the opportunity to use LEGO® Education regularly they quickly learn how to use it effectively.

2. BUILD A COLLECTION OF SPECIALIST PIECES

Sometimes children’s interest in a particular way or type of building means you need lots of specialist pieces. Consider some of the specialist equipment packs such as vehicle parts, roof tiles or windows, doors and people to supplement your general LEGO Education collection.

3. IS IT EASY TO FIND THE RIGHT PIECE?

Think about how children will search for the pieces they want – several containers are often better than one (especially if there are more than 3 or 4 children using the area) and wide shallow containers work better than smaller deeper ones. If you’re really organised consider sorting the LEGO bricks into basic categories to make finding the right pieces even easier.

4. ENCOURAGE IDEAS

LEGO Education is about being creative but not everyone can be creative in a vacuum. Sometimes too much freedom is as limiting as not enough. Provide pictures and other stimulus to encourage children’s ideas. Those who want them will use them, those who don’t will build for themselves anyway. Pictures of real life objects, photos of children’s previous models and simple instructions are all good ways to stimulate an initial idea.

5. IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT THE BUILDING

Once children have built something they usually want to play with it. Is there room for this to happen? And what happens to the children’s constructions once they’ve finished with them? Is there somewhere safe they can be kept to show parents and siblings at the end of the day or to return to later in the day? Can educators (or children) take a photo of the model for future reference or discussion?
