Spencer stood next to the twin windows of the living room, watching the sky darken by theminute. Life in a small town such as this consisted of mundane jobs at the farms, pawnshops, schools and churches. While the world had changed so much over the pastcenturies, this town failed to catch the train to the future. Its smell of grass and soil, thecalm sea and rocky shores, flowers and butterflies, the spring breeze and bitter winter, reminded her of the remote village faraway where she spent most of her childhood years.

Her mother loved to take her into the woods. They would spend hours on end, collectingflowers and wild strawberries together. Although she was a sick child, her mother

encouraged her to participate in outdoor activities. The exercise helped her grow a littlestronger, but no other child wanted to be her friend. It had to be her sickly appearance andthe fact that she wasn't one of the natives there. The solitude she faced in the early yearswas an excellent preparation for what she had become. There were endless nights whereshe pondered about the courage to walk out into the sun again, following her mother's leadas she used to.

    "What are you thinking about?"

A warm smile curved up Spencer's lips. She turned to Annie, who had just entered the roomwith a tray consisting of a teapot and two teacups. "I was just thinking about how beautifulthe sunset is."

"I seem to remember you preferring sunrise." Annie brought the tray to the rectangular, small table in front of the couch, and they proceeded to sit on the chairs next to each other.

"As a matter of fact, I do." Spencer chortled.

The old woman poured some tea for Spencer and said, "You're up early tonight. Couldn'tsleep?"

For a split second, Spencer glanced away, but still had the smile on her face. She knew thatAnnie could see right through her, and the dullness in her eyes couldn't lie. She hadn't hadany blood since taking Ian's. She was literally drained from the journey back from thewerewolf's lair, and the hunger was building up again.

Spencer took Annie's hand and held it in her lap. "I guess I'm not used to sleeping with astranger in my room."

"You could stay upstairs tonight, and I'll be sure to keep the curtains closed. Well, ofcourse after your supper"

"That sounds like a great idea," Spencer said, rubbing her neck.

The dark-haired man in the basement had fallen fast asleep after the meal, while Spencerwas wide awake even though she was rather exhausted. The taste of Ian's warm blood hadlingered on her tongue, and its luring power had kept her senses on high alert. Ian'sdisrupted episodes of memories had shuffled before her eyes, hitting her like a ton ofbricks. Incoherent voices, mad screams, children crying, the sound of horn honking andgunshots had thundered in her ears, and it had taken so much energy from her just to tryand understand them. Ian's blood had proven to be useless. Was a natural born werewolf

so powerful that even his memories were too wild to tame? Was Ian's life as chaotic andtricky as his memories? Even so, Spencer could still sense the longing and lonelinessseeding deeply in those frenzied recollections. She knew too well that a life without aparent must have its profound effect on the child, and she had lived on the rule to bemerciful when she preyed.

At Annie's clutch on her hand, Spencer was pulled out of her thoughts. She turned to look atthe old woman quizzically. "Yes?"

The old woman's face appeared grim for a moment. "Was it because of her? Did you rescuethe kid because of Ann?"

Spencer remained silent for a while, assessing for the best reply. Countless people had

walked into her life. Some had left impressions, while others had been forgotten. And nomatter what Ann had done, Spencer had always treated their moments simply as a past. Atleast, she tried.

"I just needed some information from the boy. I couldn't let him die," Spencer said, lookingaway.

"Is it the legend again? Do you think he really knows?"

"I'm not sure perhaps, no," Spencer muttered, rubbing her chin.

"Then how much longer will you keep him here? What if he tells others about our placeafter we released him?"

Spencer inwardly sighed. It seemed that Ian could not provide her the information shewanted, and it was dangerous to keep him here any longer. However, she just wanted tomake sure that Reito left Midgard before letting Ian go. "He'll go home soon, but on thecondition that he won't know our location. You needn't worry, all right?" She then stoppedat the beeping sound in the pocket of her black sweatshirt. Putting the teacup down on thetable, she fished out an old mobile phone and took a quick look over it.

"Is it him again?" Annie asked, and then quickly continued, "Please, don't go. Your recentoutings with him will expose your identity and I don't want to see you get hurt again."

Putting up a smile, Spencer slipped the cell phone back into her pocket and poured anothercup of tea for the old woman. "Don't look so glum, Annie. It wasn't that bad, and it won't

happen again. I was being reckless," she said, and then giggled. "Let's have some more tea, shall we? And then I'll play something nice for you."

She continued to smile even when Annie could not. She just had to even if she knew shecouldn't fool her. Her nice gesture was just a reassurance for Annie that she'd leave anywayas usual. It had always been this way, one task after another. For centuries, each journeyhad taken her further away from her past, everything that she ever was. But life was neveras simple as she wished.

Ian madly searched the woman's body for the key to the collar. Besides not having the UVguns with him, his inability to transform could also risk his escape.

Choking, Annie waved and swung her arms around in panic. "Sh She has it"

Frowning, Ian eventually let go of the chain, believing that the old woman wouldn't have

dared to lie in the face of death. "Where did she go?" he asked, kicking the bits and piecesof broken plates aside.

Annie had flopped forwards onto the floor, grabbing her neck as she coughed. She shakilysat up and scooted away from the werewolf. "Please Please, don't hurt me"

"Where did she go? When will she be back?" Ian peered out of the doorway to see an emptykitchen. He then pulled off the links of both handcuffs, getting rid of those extra weights.

With one hand supporting her weight on the floor, Annie put her other hand on her chest asshe looked up at Ian. "She she doesn't usually tell where she goes but she usuallycomes back an hour before dawn What are you going to do now?"

"Well, I'm not going to wait for her to return, that's for sure." Ian knelt down beside Annieand lifted the woman's chin to see the red traces around her neck. "The marks should goaway in a few days. Nothing to worry about. I wasn't really going to break your neck."

Noting the spaghetti splattered on the floor, Ian stood up and stalked out of the bedroom. He headed towards the fridge in the kitchen and searched for any available food. Having noknowledge of the house's exact location, he'd need to fill his stomach before leaving. It wasalready dark, and he'd be in trouble if the vampires were still out there, looking for him.

Annie had followed into the kitchen, but kept a good distance from the hungry wolf."There's still some left in the pot," she said, pointing to the oven.

Ian opened the oven and grabbed the pot inside. Fumbling through the drawer, he took a

pair of chopsticks out, and then gobbled up what was left in the pot. Annnie was certainly abetter cook than the vampire.

"We didn't mean to hurt you, child," Annie said, keeping herself at the corner opposite toIan.

"Oh? The bitch attacked me, and then brought me here as a prisoner. Yeah, that's a friendlygesture," Ian nodded in a sarcastic remark.

"You shot her, but she still saved you from him," Annie quietly said.

Ian stopped before he glanced up at the woman. There was a hint of fear swimming inAnnie's usually determined gaze. The old woman clearly feared him, and most likely would

not lie. During the attack in the woods, he had thought that he missed the target. ButSpencer's visible fatigue this morning just proved Annie's statement. "I didn't need avampire to save me. I was out killing them," Ian deadpanned with a mouthful.

Annie slowly took a seat at the dinning table, her gaze studying Ian. "Although you do havesome resemblances to your mother, not by much, but still I see that you're not sodifferent from her after all"

At the mention of his mother, Ian lowered the pot down and studied the gray-hairedwoman. "What are you talking about?"

"Ann thought you were just like her, a human being. I think she was happy that way Butlook at you now. Things have changed so much since her death. Your father had set out todestroy Uriah, and it seems that he'd ingrained hatred into you, too. He'd made you intoher."

Ian stared hard at Annie, trying to detect a lie. For an old lady working as a volunteer in achurch to know so much about the immortal world was surely the byproduct of living withthe rogue vampire, but Ian was deeply bothered when Annie appeared to have known hismother rather well. As far as he knew, his father never mentioned any old acquaintances ofhis mother. Ann died a wife to a scientist, a mother to a natural born werewolf, and aperson whose death caused deep divergence between the two clans. She was known for theconsequences around her, but never herself.

Annie took in a deep breath before staring up at the younger man. "Your mother wasn't justa housewife, Ian. Did you know that she was a scientist working for WOOHP?"

Ian froze. The handcuffs around his wrists suddenly felt so heavy that he could barely standstraight. He put the food down before his hands would tremble in front of Annie. There wasno proof for any of the claims Annie had made, but he found no voice to argue, or even thecourage to stop the woman.

"I knew Ann many, many years ago. We were assigned to the same project. She was alively woman and a fierce one when it came to her duty. By all means, she was hardly aninnocent woman, a victim. WOOHP has been a secret organization built to hunt downvampires and the self-invented werewolf, your father. After decades of attempting to buildan immortal themselves, they decided not to like anything different from them. They said,'the immortals have no place in theirmortal world'. For years, Ann lived by the code. Unlikeme, she never had a doubt. She never wavered But that somehow changed after shemarried your father," Annie recounted, and then leaned forwards to stare closer into Ian'seyes.

"Let me tell you this, child. It wasn't romantic. It wasn't all love and understanding. WhenHideaki just wanted to hide from the world, your mother was still relentless in searching for

the sacred blood. To find Uriah had always been her ambition, her passion." Annie's violetgaze dropped a little as she recalled further. "Your father, of course, didn't like it. Theirfights became more frequent and harsher. They didn't part well that night, the night thevampires ambushed her. When the car accident happened, he was never the same since."

"You You're lying! My father never mentioned anything like that! He never said anythingabout my mother being a WOOHP either. He'd never keep anything from me! How did youknow all of this? Prove it!" Ian clenched his fists, his body trembling with anger and, partly, dread. It was the fear of not knowing and being left out, the wall that separated him fromthe rest of the worldthat thin line he had always felt his entire life.

Annie clasped her hands together on the table. "You could wait until Spencer is back andask her yourself. Her memories are so keen that it's scary sometimes, although she doesn'tlike to admit it" She then stopped as sorrow filled her eyes. "She rarely says what she

    means."

Staring down at the floor, Ian had to lean back against the sink before looking up again."What What happened between them? Why did why did Spencer help me?"

Annie looked down before she replied, "I think it's because you have something she wants. The same thing Reito wants."

    Ian frowned. "Reito?"

  • 8/6/2019 Legend Of The Vampire (Chapter 6: Agent of WOOHP)

    6/14

"He's the one who attacked you. He's a significant member of Uriah, the queen's favorite. And he happens to be an acquaintance of Spencer. I suppose she's with him as we speak."

Ian felt his head spinning, inundated with new information. He was unsure of what tobelieve or think now. Spencer stole him before her friend could capture him. What was thevampire trying to do, going against Uriah alone? "Whatwhat do they want from me?"Ian's voice came out in a frustrated whisper.

"They thought that Ann found the origin, and that you have found it, too. It isn't just a fablelike most people believe. The top officials know it isn't. Like Ann, you're one of fewbelievers out there. But be careful what you wish for."

Ian looked into the woman's eyes, unable to move. The same question had been hauntinghim throughout his life. Was it real, or wasn't it? What was it? Why did they fear it so muchif no evidences had been proven?

"It's a threat to them. You are a threat to them just like your mother was."

Ian straightened himself up, trying to steady his voice. "So they think they can kill me to

    cover the truth?"

"Since when does the truth matter? They'll destroy anyone who dares to follow the legend, whether you know it or not," Annie said resolutely. "You're in it for a treat, child."

Midgard Park stood only four blocks west to the First District's Library. The chilly air hadkept this suburban area of the island rather quiet and few people were seen strolling at thistime of night. The large public park flourished with numerous wild flowers and gigantictrees, and a pond was located near the west entrance.Upon a thick branch of a tree, Spencer stood with both her hands hiding in her sweatshirt'sfront pocket, the view of a full moon hanging low in the backdrop. The pale moonlight

illuminated her face and the light shade of her hair. The chestnut tresses swayed with thesoft blow of wind. Her crimson eyes dimmed down to blend into the darkness. She staredunblinking at the pack of werewolves about fifty meters away. Thirty-two males andfemales gathered together, including the blonde male in the center. The squad wasprobably why Reito contacted her tonight, though she had not planned to answer his call.

Spencer could only imagine how difficult a position Reito had been in since his blotchedmission. He escaped the scene injured, all of his men killed. It was surprisingly kind of theFirst District's headmaster to still shelter him. His blunder not only humiliated the entireclan, but completely destroyed every diplomatic approach the two tribes had grudginglyagreed on in the past. Now, the werewolves had edged in close to the only vampireheadquarter in Midgard, and Reito had obviously expected it. However, Spencer waspuzzled that they came in such a small number. It was believed that First District did not

hold a large number of vampires, but it was still a risk to barge into enemy territory. Itcould fatally mirror Reito's failure.

"I'll take the front entrance. Alex and Samantha, you both take the back entrance. We mustfind the crypt underground, wherever it is. That helpless Ian Kruger must be inside, andjust wash me rescue his little sorry ass. We will not return to our master until we burn theplace to the ground! They will pay for their aggression towards us!" the blonde man stated, hands on his hip.

    7/14

Spencer raised a brow at the troop leader's loud voice. They were supposed to be on asecret mission, but any passersby would have caught what the blonde had just said.Spencer watched them with great interest, thrilled to be able to collect information andcompare their strategies. While she felt that Reito was overly confident in his strength toattack the lair with such a small squad, First District wasn't as populated and fiercelyprotected as the lair.

"Wait, Sam, Master Kuga only wants Lord Ian back. We don't have to burn their coven.Besides, there are only thirty-two of us here," Alex countered. The black short-haired manwas rather skinny and tall, and was always accompanied by the young woman the troopleader had just called, 'Samantha'. The pair even had a number of males and femalesgathering behind them. But the blonde seemed to have her own following as well.

"What are you saying? If you're afraid of them bats, you can just wait outside! But don'tyou dare infect us with your cowardice!" Sam paced around and pounded on his chest."They attacked our lair, all right. This is war! We'll burn them, and that's my order!"

"I think we should wait until dawn. Why give them the chance to escape? In a few hours, they will have no way to run but to surrender. And we don't know where Lord Ian is held. Ifwe burn the place down, we might endanger his life," Samantha said, prompting a few

other pack members to nod in agreement.

Sam grunted. He was visibly annoyed to see some others opposing him. "We waited, didn'twe? But you guys were afraid to attack this morning because there were more troopsarriving before dawn. So listen, wimps. Time's up. Master has made it clear that he will notsend more aid to us, and this is all we got!" The blonde pulled out a double-barreledshotgun from under his brown leather coat, and pumped it. "It's now! Tonight! We can'twait until they build a fortress around this place. It'd be too late then!"

Lazily leaning against the huge trunk, Spencer glanced around to see whether Sam hadalready attracted some deserving attention or not. Unfortunately, there weren't manyaround to notice the gathering. It'd be interesting to see if their wobbly teamwork had anychance against the vampires. Amused by the scene unfolding below her, Spencer wondered

if Ian realized that he had unknowingly become the center of violence now.

Then the consensus was reached. Swiftly, a group of werewolves followed Sam out of thepark, while the other half followed Alex and Samantha. Spencer watched them until theydisappeared out of her sight, and then spread her wings and ascended into the dark sky.High above ground, she blended into the night as a bat would.

Quietly, Spencer alighted upon the slate roof of the library. Her wings folded and retractedback into the flesh of her back. The two, long, bloodied slashes of the wing outletsimmediately healed themselves afterward. She inwardly grumbled at the pair of splits onthe sweatshirt, where the wings had penetrated. Annie had started to complain aboutsewing them recently, but it was only because the woman was worried about her. It wastheir mutual perception that Spencer only used her wings when necessary, and Annie didn'tlike to imagine her in a situation which required it.

Crouching on all fours, Spencer peered down through the glass section of the ceiling, observing the people below. On the first floor, she remembered the old, chubby librarianbehind the wooden counter from her last visit. It was her few public appearances with Reitoand the first at First District. She tagged along as his acquaintance. Since he had manyconnections and peers, she'd be only one of the many faces. The librarian, as expected, didnot pay much attention to her. To Spencer's interest, Reito seemed to be as unrelenting asIan in the search for the origin. She had always kept track of Uriah's intents as to keep herenemies close, and Reito had unknowingly become her source of information.

  • 8/6/2019 Legend Of The Vampire (Chapter 6: Agent of WOOHP)

    8/14

Oh? He's really something, isn't he?

Spencer found it amusing that Sam and some of the other pack members just marchedthrough the front entrance. There was nothing subtle among a pack of canines even whenthey possessed human intellect. Sam was armed with a UV-loaded shotgun, and wore twobandoleers underneath his coat. Some pack members preferred machine guns, while othersopted for axes and crossbows. But all of them carried a stake with them, the item tuckedsafe in their belt holster.

The librarian was equally petrified as the people standing around by the bold display. Ittook only a few moments before the first floor became quiet, and the silence grew to theupper floors successively. Everyone gradually gathered around the wooden handrails, andformed a big rectangular shape in the middle of every floor, peering down at the intrudersin the lobby.

Sam turned to face the old lady behind the counter and said, "The library's closed."

His voice was loud enough that even Spencer could hear him from the rooftop. As if on cue, everyone hastily gathered their belongings and rushed to the first floor. After the lasthuman ran out of the building, a pack member readily closed the door and chained the lock

from the inside, while others immediately rolled down the black blinds on all windows. Thelibrary was now sealed from the outside world.

The living room was a little more spacious than the rooms in the basement. Two teacupsand a teapot were left cold on the small table in front of the couch. An old, black, uprightpiano stood in the corner next to the twin windows facing west. Looking out, a view wasoffered to the thick woods bathed in moonlight. The wooden floor creaked as Ian paced around the room, with Annie watching him from thedistance. There were pictures of a young Annie and her pets hung up on the walls, very fewshowing her with family members and friends. But of course, there weren't any pictures of

her and the vampire, were there? It was as if Annie was the only person living in thishouse, and the sole evidence of their happy times was the cold basement no one knew of itsexistence. It wouldn't be long before Annie departed this world, and Spencer wouldultimately be left with nothing.

    Nothing

Nothingness was perhaps the scariest thing imaginable for both humans and immortals. Iansat down at the piano chair and played an easy, slow melody. He wasn't sure why he evenbothered to care what would become of the vampire's future. The couple was a merestranger to him. Well, almost. But the rarity of the nature of their relationship was whatstruck him the most. It was one of the reasons why his father disapproved of any cross-tribal relationship, having learned from his own marriage. He was so determined to keepIan in line by turning Jerry, a human boy who was his best friend, breaking the clan's rule

that the privilege was granted only for those who shared the same retribution against thevampires.

But as time passed by, both Ian and Jerry proved to be too young and reckless for eachother, and they gradually fell out of their reluctant friendship. Jerry had only recently foundsomeone new, though his choice was always the worst fit. But Ian was contented to bealone. He might not fully understand what love was, but he had witnessed its power todestroy people. Honestly, he even felt lucky that he didn't need it, but it still touched him

    9/14

every time he saw someone fall into its circle of sadness. That hurt look in his father's eyesquite remarkably mirrored Annie's.

On the ending note, Ian looked up, his gaze staring at the wall in front of him but not reallyseeing it. "She's not coming back tonight," he muttered.

Annie straightened up, startled. "What? Howhow would you know?"

"I think I know where she's gone to. And if I'm correct, there'll be a huge party tonight,"Ian said. Certainly, if his peers had started looking for him, they'd be at the library.

"What are you going to do?" Annie put a hand over her chest, worry residing in those violeteyes.

Ian turned to the old woman and then smirked. "I'm going to get some answers tonight."

Sam raised the gun up to the old lady's face. "I'm here to collect Ian Kruger."But the librarian didn't reply. Instead, she ducked fast behind the counter. Sam opened fire, the UV bullet tearing through the shelf behind the old lady. Shards of wood and bits andpieces of paper flied about like feathers.

Sam hopped across the counter, but the old lady had already disappeared. "Damn it! Wherethe hell did she go!"

"There must be a secret passageway around there somewhere!" shouted a pack member. He went around the counter to help Sam find an outlet under the counter. But the lack ofany vampire's presence in the library only alerted the werewolves even more. They heldtheir weapons tightly in their grips, glancing left and right almost in paranoia.

Watching them through the glass plane, Spencer shook her head slightly; the werewolves'precipitation would cost them dearly. From where she was, she could see the librarianquietly crawling up along the wall above the two werewolves behind the counter. Thelibrarian appeared to be much faster and subtler than her aged body would normally allow, but she probably didn't earn the position for nothing.

Then a series of gunshots suddenly blasted throughout the building. The black-cladvampires had swiftly gathered around the handrails of the upper floors, firing madly downat the lobby area. The werewolves spurted in all directions like a flock of doves. Some hidbehind the flipped tables and tall shelves to dodge the shower of bullets, while others tookturn to fire back up, scooting further and further into the corners.

Sam jumped onto the counter and hurled himself up to the second floor, firing as he landedon a desk next to the row of handrail, taking down a group of five vampires in front of him.Kneeling, he bent a little, his head snapping at the creaky sound coming from his left. Theshelf, which was pushed up against the wall, began to slide and revealed a hidden doorway.A gang of vampires flooded out, fully armed with assault rifles loaded with silver-nitrateammunition. Howling at the top of his lungs, Sam outstretched his arms to give rooms forhis muscles to split and swell. His neck thickened and his now furry body enlarged to twicethe size of his human form. Thick, strong claws grew out of every tip of his finger. At histransformation, every member of his squad instantly followed likewise. Yet Sam was thelargest among them, his golden fur lengthened around his neck. His brown eyes glowed intothe intense shade of amber. Snarling, he bounced right at the vampires, tearing at theirnecks and bodies even before they could aim at him.

    10/14

Up on the roof, Spencer carefully hid herself behind the solid plane of slate, leaving only hereyes to peer down through the glass. Judging from the direction the werewolves wereshooting at, strayed UV bullets were the last thing she needed. However, her attention waspulled away from the chaos inside the library and brought to the scene in the alley justoutside the south exit of the building. Alex and Samantha, and their group were trying tobreak in, but it seemed to have been sealed from the inside, and the lock was much toostrong for ordinary guns to destroy. All of a sudden, three black cars came to barricade the

alley's exit. The windows rolled down, and the vampires inside the cars opened fire at once. For a split second, the werewolves froze like a herd of deer caught in a headlight. Alex, along with several other members, then managed to dart the pellets and hide behind thedumpsters.

"Watch out!" Alex called out to his friends. He fired back at the vampires, keeping them atthe alley entrance. But Samantha, while trying to push her friends into hiding, was shot andfell to the muddy ground. Alex rushed out from his hiding spot as his men successively shotat the vampires, covering his back. He leapt across the narrow alley, dragging Samantha'slimping body to hide behind a parked silver van. "Samantha! Stay with me! Try to stayawake, Samantha!" The short-haired bodyguard held his friend with one arm, whilst holdinga gun with his other hand.

Samantha tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids fluttered close every few seconds. Lines ofrunning silver were visible underneath her paling skin. Silver-nitrate traveled fast throughthe bloodstreams, making it far deadlier than a UV bullet as it only affected the woundedarea.

To the werewolves' dread, Reito exited the middle car, a cigar between his lips. He was in agray suit with a silver tie, a leather black coat hanging over his shoulders. He pulled out apistol from his shoulder holster and, with ease, took an aim at the werewolves. One by one,he shot down the intruders stuck in the alley. Some of them had transformed and jumpedonto the wall of the library, crawling upwards to escape the attack.

    This is not good

Spencer glanced around, contemplating if she should leave the scene altogether for fear ofbeing seen, especially by Reito. Two werewolves were trying to get to the roof, and in a fewseconds they reached the top before Spencer could decide. She spun around to face them, her eyes widening in anticipation for their attack. But the werewolves stopped at the edgeof the roof, stunned to see a vampire there. One of them suddenly howled and fell off theroof, having been shot by the vampires below. Sensing the danger, the remaining werewolfplunged forwards, driving Spencer through the glass ceiling and falling with her headfirst tothe lobby.

Being clawed on her right shoulder and left ribcage by the heavy, male werewolf, Spencerknew it would only deepen the wounds if she tried to fly from his harsh grips. She alsorefrained from using her wings; it would expose her since it was very likely that only Reitohere was powerful enough to possess wings. Running out of options, she pulled thewerewolf closer and bit his neck, taking his blood to compensate the injuries. In just a few

seconds, the werewolf fell flat onto the granite floor, his lifeless body working as a cushionfor her. With stray bullets flying about, Spencer readily rolled off his top and lied downbeside his body as much as she could.

A few werewolves were still fighting, while several had already fallen with wounds or weredead. Equally battered, the vampires gradually retreated into the secret passageways alongthe walls of the upper floors, shelves sliding to seal the exits. But there was one vampireleft on the second floor, relentlessly fending off the werewolves. The librarian crawled fastalong the walls, ducking and leaping from one spot to another, firing back at the opponentsat the same time.

Sam had naturally taken notice of his friend's freefall from the roof, and picked up on theattack outside. He dove off the third floor and landed right in front of Spencer. Spencerlooked up to meet the pair of amber eyes glowing with rage, his foggy breath fuming. Thebeast was twice Spencer's height and a ton heavier. Now might not have been a bad time touse her wings, but the hassle to follow in eradicating witnesses was something shedespised.

Rapidly, Spencer rolled to her left to avoid the large paw directed towards her. The tilesbroke at the contact point, broken bits and dust shooting up from where she had been lying. Her head would have been crushed into pieces if she had been just a tad slower. Jumpinginto the air, she evaded yet another attack from Sam. Although her speed was reduced bythe bleeding wounds, Spencer was almost dancing in the air as she eluded the persistentswings of the powerful claws. The frustration in Sam's eyes grew with each failure to hit,and it finally resulted in his hasty strike that missed Spencer by a foot; his paw stuck in thebroken debris; his whole right arm was shaken, pained by the fierce impact he broughtupon himself. Spencer slid backwards, bending to snatch the UV gun on the floor, and thenleapt into the air. She somersaulted and landed on Sam's back. One hand gripping thegolden fur around Sam's neck, Spencer pushed the gun against the back of the beast'shead.

    "Spencer!"

Spencer's head snapped at the source of the voice. The door to the south entrance had beenburst open, revealing the dark-haired man in a familiar, bloodied, white t-shirt and the pairof black jeans. The tail of his long black coat was swayed by the gush of cold wind comingin from the alley. Ian was standing with his two personal guards tottering behind. Had Ianmanaged to chase away Reito and his men? The tinge of grayish blue reflecting on the wallsoutside might be another reason for Reito's quick retreat. But that wasn't Spencer's mainconcern. Ian was pointing a gun at her, the UV gun she left at the monastery for the youngman's own protection, if the worst should happen. Both of his wrists still sported thehandcuffs and the steel collar around his neck.

Spencer slowly turned her gun at Ian. "Where's Annie?" Her voice was ever so soft, but herblood was boiling so much that she thought she was going to burst.

With full determination in his eyes, Ian took a step closer. "Don't do it. You know I nevermissed."

"What are you talking about? Just shoot" But Sam then hollered in agony. He had tried tostand up but was pushed back down with a sudden stab of the tip of black wing through thebase of his neck.

Ian staggered in panic at the sight of Spencer's other wing folding into a shape of a thick, long spear, lifting up into the air.

"What did you do to her?" Spencer focused her aim on Ian. Even though her shooting skillwas unmatched to the famous werewolf's, she wasn't a bad shooter either.

    "Drop your gun now!"

At Ian's demand, Spencer's left wing struck through Sam's back and exited his chest, causing the beast to fall flat on the ground. The vampire was kneeling on her left knee onthe prone form and lifting the wing again for another strike. Blood sprinkled out andtrickled down Sam's back.

The moment Ian fired Spencer flung her gun at him, catching the werewolf unexpectedly.Releasing Sam, Spencer soared at the unfocused Ian, snatched the man by the collar andhauled him up high. She shoved the werewolf against the solid plane of the ceiling, againand again until the gun slipped from Ian's grasp. Ian had to hold onto Spencer's shouldersto keep the inward spikes around the collar from entirely gouging into his neck.

"Where is Annie!" The crimson shade of the vampire's eyes bled into the color of blood, herfangs protruding as she hissed into Ian's face. But Spencer was taken by surprise whenSam had pushed himself off the floor and climbed up to the ceiling, bleeding profusely as hedid so. The golden beast gathered his last strength and jumped at the vampire above him.Spencer momentarily shut her eyes at the searing pain as the claws ripped along her leftshoulder, the force jerking her off Ian. Flying away from the attacker, Spencer found herselfquickly losing control and plummeting towards the ground, hitting the floor hard. Ian hadthen leapt for Sam, grabbing the beast as he tried to balance their fall. Ian would have beenable to make a landing but the beast's weight proved a difficult task. They crashed next tothe vampire.

Dust fogging around her, Spencer angrily wiped the blood off her face before diving right atIan, who was rolling on the ground from the impact of the landing. Each of her wings goreda deep hole into the floor, locking Ian in the middle. Growling, Spencer madly crept over her

prey's body, but abruptly paused at the unexpected gun pressed against her chest. Bothwere out of breath, and it took them a few moments to regain composure. Panting heavily,Ian took note of his own blood dripping around his neck, the result from the inward spikesaround the collar. He glanced at the menacing wings on both his sides, relief setting in hiseyes when he realized that they were not actually jabbing into him.

Spencer didn't move away. A pointblank shot from a UV bullet at her heart would instantlykill her. But she wasn't the least bit scared. Instead, she was bewitched by the reluctanceswimming in the pair of green pools just inches beneath her, curious of the intense gaze.Ian's warm breath mingled with her own cold one in a strange blend. For a few momentsnow, she had expected Ian to pull the trigger.

"She's" Ian started, and then paused a little. "She's safe," he said with a steadier voice,"She's safe in her home, waiting for you."

At Ians reassurance, Spencer felt a pang of relief breeze through her, and it was as if herstrength was washed away with it. Her arms trembled as she pushed herself from Ian. Herwings folded and retracted back into her flesh, but the two gashes along her back failed tostop bleeding as they usually did. She sat up and tried to calm her ragged breathing. Theinsufficient amount of blood she received to heal the gunshot wound the other night nowadded up to the new injuries, and she knew troubles were looming. She inwardly gruntedas her head started to spin, her sight blurred. She slowly moved away, crawling along thebodies on the floor, desperate to find any wounded, but still alive preys.

"The blood of the dead can never extend your life," a female voice said above her head.

Wheezing for air, Spencer swallowed as she glanced up. In her creamy, torn, bloodied

dress, the librarian was pointing a gun at Spencer's forehead. The old woman's other handwas also directing a gun at Alex, who was tending the wounded Samantha by the southentrance. The old vampire was the only one who remained, intending to secure the missionin seeing every werewolf perished.

"You look familiar. Where are you from, gypsy?" The librarian's voice echoed in Spencer'sears, resonating as if she was underwater. But Spencer thought her voice was too young tobelong to an elder.
