Abuse
• Results in physical harm, pain, or mental anguish

Defamation
• Occurs when false statements either cause a person to be ridiculed or damage the person’s reputation
– Reporting that a patient has an infectious disease to the State Health Department when the lab results are inaccurate

• Communicating something untruthful and harmful about another person in writing

• Verbally communicating something untruthful and harmful about another person
Informed Consent
• Permission granted voluntarily by a person who is of sound mind after the procedure and all risks involved have been explained in terms the person can understand.
– Verbal consent—person verbalizes permission– Written consent- permission is written
– Surgery, certain diagnostic test, experimental procedures, treatment of minors
Civil law
• Defines the legal relationships between people and the protection of a person’s rights

• A document is a binding legal document that states resuscitation should not be attempted if a person suffers cardiac or respiratory arrest
Power of attorney
• A document that allows you to appoint a person or organization to handle your affairs while you're unavailable or unable to do so.

• Considered privileged communication• Are used as legal records• Erasures are not allowed– Mistakes should be crossed out with single line,
corrected info inserted, dated and initialed• After legal time for retention, records should
be burned or shredded to maintain confidential
