Where to startCut a 12” length of material and plane it to ½” thick.

It is important that student do not skip this step and jump straightto tracing the pattern and cutting it out

Skipping this step leads to many problems with the overall project.1.It will difficult or impossible to plane pieces that are only 7” long2.The over width of the space between the sides will not fit the adding machine roll.3.The overall width of the project will be way to big and out of proportion for the size of this project.

Nesting the pattern

• The project helps to teach students to get the most out of piece of material. By nesting the 2 patterns they will be able to use that skill later on other projects to reduce waste.

• One of the biggest things kids tend to do is cut from the center of a board instead of using the straight cut of a board for the straight part of the pattern.

Making 2 identical sideThe key to making to identical parts is to sand, drill and notch the 2 sides together.

After the sides are rough cut on the band saw, scroll saw or jig saw, tape them together.

Do not put tape on the areas that need to be sanded. The whole goal is to make2 identical parts.

Notch for the spreader

1”

½

When making the marks for the notch, using a square is essential to getting clean straight lines.

The notch is done on the band saw. Do not sand this area, if any work needs to be done it should be completed with a file to get the areas flat.

Drilling the holeMark the center of the 3/8 by tracing the center of the adding machine roll. The mark should be 2” up from the bottom and 1 ¾” in from the back.

To insure the roll will fit after it is assembled, place the roll on the project with a 1/8” clearance from the notch and the back.

Attaching the spreadersIt is time to attach the 2 sides together.

Cut the spreader piece to ½” x 1” x 3 ½”

After cutting 2 pieces to size, make a line ½” in from both ends. The line will help to visualize the center of where the nail needs to go.

Because this a skill building project, I have students hammer in nails. It can easily be done with a brad gun.

Be sure glue is appliedto the notch and nailthe spreaders in place.

Final Steps

4 ¾” from the front to the beginning of the curve. The top can not go past that point or the roll will not be able to come out.

The final steps are:1. Attach the top. The top is a 1/8” X

3 ½” x 4 ¾” piece of MDF. It must line up with the front of the project

2. Cut a 3/8” dowel to length. An option I like is to have the students lathe the dowel. This is a skill builder project and that is another way for student to practice turning for accuracy.

3. Attach the back. There are 2 options for this piece:1. Cut a ¾” X 2” x 3 ½” MDF.

Nail it even with the bottom2. Cut a ¾” x 2” x 3 ½”, Drill a

3/8” hole on the top of each end to hold a pen that can be turned also.

Finishing touches

The only things left to do are to apply a finish to the over all project. Be sure this is done BEFORE the metal strips are put on. If you put on the metal first, finish gets under the metal and wets the paper or gets the paper stuck.

Attach the metal - The metal can be attached in 2 ways:1.Pneumatic staple gun2.Pre drill holes and use a small nail with a head to hold it in place.

Turn it in to be graded
