Ellesmere Zones

Well done to all the Leeston children who represented the school at the Ellesmere Zone Athletic Sports. It was a

beautiful day with everyone participating well in their chosen event. We have eleven children going on to

Ashburton for the Canterbury competition.

A big thank you to all the parents who helped out on the day and to Bill Whelan for being the starter. Good luck to

the children who will be competing on Wednesday 2nd December. Please check out the results.

Selwyn Trust Fun Run

It was great to see children from Leeston School running in the Selwyn Trust Running event. We had some children

even tackle the 10km run! Great effort by the staff (two teams running the 10km) and Lisa McClure who came

third in the 10km walk. Fabulous effort by everyone involved.

Hope and Toby Chmiel are proudly wearing the medals they received from a

recent swimming competition.

Well done Hope and Toby, keep up the great work!

Arabella Nimmo

Congratulations to a former pupil from Leeston School, Arabella Nimmo, who has been accepted by the

Queensland Ballet School for a two year scholarship. She will attend ballet classes and high school in

Brisbane for the next two years and hopefully her dream of becoming a full time ballerina will become a

reality. Well done Arabella – this shows the qualities of a Leeston Legend; determination, successful,

excellent and a life-long learner.

HANMER SPRINGS CAMP YEAR 5 & 6

In term 1, 2016 the year 5 and 6 children will be going on camp to Hanmer Springs (dates 30, 31 March, 1 April).

Last time we went to Hanmer Springs the camp was $160. This is a reminder to parents that the camp will

definitely be on and an approximate idea of the cost.

YEAR 6 WATER SKILLS & YEAR 5 BEACH EDUCATION

SELWYN DISTRICT COUNCIL WATER SUPPLIES El Nino conditions are forecast to affect Cantebury over spring and summer. The El Nino is predicted to be the strongest since 1997-98. This is likely to mean a dry spring and summer which will increase demand for water. So that we can continue to sustainably supply households with water over summer, we are asking people connected to all Council water supplies to avoid watering their lawns at times of peak demand for water. We encourage Selwyn residents on Council water supplies to try to avoid watering lawns between 6am and 9am and 4pm and 9pm daily. These are times when households use the most water and demand is especially high at these times at the weekend. Watering your lawn for one hour in summer can use as much water as a whole households typically uses in a day. If everyone waters their lawns at the same time over summer this places huge demands on Council water supplies. The recommended time to water your lawn is between 9pm and 6am as this is when the least evaporation occurs and water has the best opportunity to soak into the ground. If you are considering watering your lawn during the day between 9am and 4pm we recommend you check the weather conditions first. Watering during the daytime is fine on cooler overcast days and when there is little wind. Watering during the middle of the day on hot or nor’west days is not a good idea as a significant amount of water will evaporate The Council is currently requesting that residents follow our advice about when to water your lawns. If demand for water increases over summer then water restrictions may be introduced requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. See www.selwyn.govt.nz for updates.
