WHAT COACHES SHOULD KNOW

PREVENTING HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS

• Heat-related illnesses are caused when an individual is subjected to extreme temperature and humidity and is unable to cool down.

• Schedule and enforce frequent water breaks.

• Coaches should take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. When athletes are practicing or competing, coaches should do the following:

• Allow days for adjusting to warmer climates.• Schedule practice during cooler times of the

day

Page 25: LEE’S SUMMIT FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION · 2017-08-03 · Our Partners • Lee’s Summit Parks Rec • R7 School District • Volunteer Led Organization –We need volunteers to keep

APPROPRIATE FLUID INTAKE

• Drink 16 ounces of appropriate fluid for every pound of weight lost after activity.

• Players should not take salt tablets, but rather salt their food liberally when playing in hot, humid weather.

• During a competition or workout, drink 4 ounces of appropriate fluid every 10 to 20 minutes.

WEATHER

INCLEMENT WEATHER• Stop all outdoor activity and seek shelter when thunder or

lightning are present. You should gauge distance from an electrical storm, using the flash-to-bang method.

• Sound travels about 1 mile in 5 seconds, and lightning is seen immediately after flash. If you see a flash and then hear thunder about 5 seconds later, lightning is about 1 mile away. The 30-30 rule provides for a safe approach. It means that when flash-to-bang time is 30 seconds, or 6 miles, it is time to stop activity and head for shelter.
