Patent Holders The LED Chronicle 1907 H J Round discovered electroluminescence using SiC and a cats whisker. He was one of the early pioneers of radio and received 117 patents. 1920 Oleg V. Losev studied the phenomenon of LEDs in radio sets. His first work on LEDs involved a report on light emission from SiC. James R. Biard and Gary Pittman worked together and developed the Infrared LED at Texas Instruments. Nick Holonyak Jr. developed the red LED, the first LED of visible light at GE. He used GaAsP on GaAs substrate. M. George Craford creates the first yellow LED using GaAsP at Monsanto. Herbert Maruska and Jacques Pankove developed the violet LED using Mg-doped GaN films. Shuji Nakamura developed the world’s first bright blue LED using GaN Thomas P. Pearsell developed special high brightness LEDs for fiber optic use. Ching Tang and Steven Van Slyke developed the first OLED at Kodak. Chihaya Adachi invented electron transport material and constructed a double heterostructure OLED. Jeremy Burroughes, Richard Friend and Donal Bradley together discovered polymer based OLEDs. Teruo Tohma developed the first commercial OLED displays using PMOLED technology at Pioneer. 1961 1962 1972 1976 1979 1987 1988 1990 1997 1998 Mark E. Thomson and Stephen Forrest developed the first phosphorescent OLED by using an emissive layer of Platinum(II) octaethylporphyrin. Zoltan Bay and Gyorgy Szigeti patented a SiC electroluminescent lighting device, considered to be the predecessor of modern-day LED. 1958 1952 Kurt Lehovec, applied for SiC visible lights LED Rubin Braunstein and Egon Loebner patented a green LED made from a lead antimonde/ Germanium alloy. 1964 IBM used LEDs on circuit boards in an early mainframe computer. 1968 HP integrated LEDs into early hand-held calculators. 1971 Jacques Pankove pioneered first blue LEDs. 2006 Nakamura received the Millennium Technology Prize for development of a white LED. 1939 2007 The Italian village of Torraca became the first township to convert its entire illumination system to LED. 2008 Audi – the first car to use fully LED headlamps.
