Lecture 3 dark knight returns/killing joke

pg. 25, you are puny, you are small, cold shower impotent figure

pg. 96, he's too big, batman has gone from being a man to being a myth, confirmed at the end of the book-gordon and yindel- pearl harbor story, it becomes lodged within the mythological, becomes too big

Ubermensch - overman, literal meaning, or superman-an ideal superior man conceived by Nietzsche as being evolved from the normal human type; loosely, a man of extraordinary power or ability; a superior being- God is dead-instead of god providing the moral standards to live by, you should be able to provide the moral standards on your own-this moral-providing role could be done by the ubermensch-something like batman-miller for sure has read nietzsche

-miller quote, moral deterioriation-superheroes manifest the qualities that make it possible for us to struggle through day-to-day life-who determines the morals?-who will watch the watchmen?-who watches vigilantes?-excerpt from watchmen (graffiti watchmen statement never seen fully in the book)-vigilante think that they are right-no one really watches the watchmen, they are self-appointed, they live outside of society-zimmerman, trey von martiin (stand your ground)

-justice- politics- morality

-politics affected the justice (SYG law), does morality play a role?-abortion?-who decides what is just?

-reagan government, why doesn't batmans justice not overlap, miller justice?

-what do traditional superheroes do?

-good upholds laws-why is he good, he upholds laws laws made by government are truth-why didn't superman become bad? The way he was raised by the Kents-he is an alien, secret identity, alienated from society-what constitutes a hero, traditionally? Somebody who risks personal vulnerabilities

-pg. 84, superman flag morphing-connection made between reagan, acting outside the law (ties with business, coercing superman, who is a sanctioned vigilante)-act in ways that preserve the established order

-amanda hiscox, civil disobedience, a quasi form of protected speech, technically against the law

-your adopted son will honor you (why superman acts the way he does), no I don't like it, but I get to save lives

-pg. 44-45, batman, right now

-pg. 65, 2 opposing views, against and for batman

-pg. 110, byron brassballs, conservative idealism-bernhard goetz-quite convinced what they did was right-convinced that they had good reason to-then what is the right type of vigilantism

pg. 190, beginning of the fight between superman and batman-superman descending on batman, crime alley setting-remember the origin story, it comes back a lot in this story

code of conduct 1 (e) (f) (I)

end-starts out as bruce wayne, ends up as bruce wayne full time

-fascism-reliance on physical violence.intimidation ->batman-miller obviously sympathizes with it, mocks the criticisms that come out of characters in the book-reactionary vs. revolutionary role-batman is reacting to threats against the status quo, he is the one who sets those definitions though

-in millers reinvention of batman, is he clearly legal or illegal, good or bad, right or wrong-classically, he has been on the side of law

killing joke

-conflation of insanity with evil-batman wants to know joker (is it a red herring)-people acting without thinking it's wrong, different sets of standard-joker seems to know what he's doing is wrong and doesn't really care-he plans the whole thing with barb, gordon-if he's insane, does that excuse his actions?

Nietzsche's transvaluation of values

-what nietzsche values (joker), his own authenticity

-a separate narrative jokers back story, his one bad day
