Who is Hispanic?"The terms "Hispanic" or "Latino" refer topersons who trace their origin or descent toMexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spanish speakingCentral and South America countries, and otherSpanish cultures. Origin can be considered as theheritage, nationality group, lineage, or country ofthe person or the persons parents or ancestorsbefore their arrival in the United States. Peoplewho identify their origin as Hispanic or Latinomay be of any race. - U.S. Census Bureau, 2010 4. What is the origin of the word Hispanic? The term Hispanic as used in the USA, wascoined by the U.S. Census Bureau in the 1970sto describe people of Spanish-speaking origin. It is not a term that originated from within theculture. Primarily people who have beenformed and educated in the USA use Hispanic. They are accustomed to the term by educationor by family custom. Latin American nationals, recent immigrants to this country, may notalways self-identify as Hispanic. 5. and what about the word Latino? Latino most often refers to people of Latin Americandescent, as distinct from Spanish descent (peoplefrom Spain). We hear this term used frequently inSouth America to describe people on the continent asa whole, including Portuguese-speaking Brazilians.(Brazilians consider themselves Latinos, but they donot call themselves Hispanic, as they do not speakSpanish.) Latino is more tied to national origin andnot to language. Latino is more likely to be used byfirst or second-generation Latin Americans who havecloser cultural ties to Latin America than to the USA. 6.
