- 1. Learning to Respond Appropriately
A Social Story in Digital Story Format

EDUC 505
2. I Want to Learn Better Ways to Respond
I want to enjoy the time I spend with my family and friends
more.Sometimes I have trouble reacting appropriatelyto situations
in my life.
This picture was taken on a good day.I am sitting with my uncles
dog andshe is behaving nicely. So am I.
3. Greetings Are Important
When I greet my friend kindly, she will be kind to me.Smiling at
people makes them feel comfortable.
4. Dont Be Rude
What do you want?!?I really dont want to talk to you.You make me
sick!!!
It is inappropriate to say mean things to a friend when you are
greeted.Avoid responding this way.
5. Talking About Your Interests Is Good
Do you remember the time we went on that bike ride with my mom?I
thought she was behind me, but then she was gone.It was so
funny.
6. Show Friends You Are Interested in Them
Ask your friends questions. You will learn more about peoplethis
way. Did you get to go see the movie you wanted to see at The
Rave?
7. Be Attentive When Talking to Friends
I did get to go see the movie. It was very action-packed and funny
too hey, where are you going?
Dont walk away from a friend without listening to the answer from
your question.You will seem rude.
8. We Can Calmly Resolve Conflict
Respectfully express angeror frustration to a friend by speaking
calmly .
I really didnt appreciate getting yelled at.Maybe we can talk later
after we have had a chance to think about this
9. Being Mad and Fighting is an Inappropriate Response
Avoid reacting in an angry way.Yelling will often just cause more
frustration.
This is an inappropriate response to a conflict. I hate you! You
always blame me when things are wrong!! Just dont ever talk to me
again!Go away, Im so sick of you!!!
10. Sometimes Things Dont Work Out the Way I Planned
I really want to wear my zebra-printT-shirt to school in the
morning.Im sure it was washed with this load of laundry.Oh no, I
dont see the shirt in this stack of clothes.
11. Making an Appropriate Compromise
This isnt the shirt I wanted to wear, but I dont mind wearing it to
school.I can wear my other shirt next week.
12. InappropriateResponse to a Problem
Oh great! Now I have to find a whole new outfit for school!!! Ill
never be able to find one tonight though. Even if I do, it will
take forever. Then ,Ill be up too late and not get enough sleep. So
Ill be a grouch at school and it will be the worst day ever.I hate
my life.
A negative response will not make things any better in this
situation.
13. Mom Needs My Help
When you are asked to do a chore, answer calmly.
Mom:Could you please fold the laundry for me?
Daughter:Sure mom, Ill be there in a few minutes, after I finish
this call.
Mom:Thanks for your help.
Daughter: Youre welcome.
This is a good way to interact with an adult.
14. Inappropriate response: No mom, cant you see Im busy!!!
Mom: Could you please fold the laundry when you get off the
phone?
Daughter: No mom, cant you see Im busy!!! You are so bossy! You
just think you can push me around all the time!!
This was an overreaction. This could cause a bigger problem between
the mother and daughter.
15. Life is More Pleasant Now
Learning to respond appropriately to other people is not always
easy.It will take time and practice. When there is less conflict
with other people, life is more pleasant.
