Celebrations
New Years Eve
Different cultures may celebrate the same holidays differently. Thinkabout how New Years Eve is celebrated in the United States on December31st at midnight. Spanish-speaking countries have a special tradition inwhich they eat 12 grapes at midnight to bring good luck for each month inthe new year.
At midnight, with each chime of the clock, people put a grape in theirmouth. Of course it is almost impossible to finish eating all 12 grapes bythe 12th chime of the clock. There is much laughter as people look at each
other.
In Spanish-speaking countries everyone gets ready to eat 12 grapes to bring good luck for each month in the new year.

This tradition began long ago in Spain. One year there was a large grape
harvest, and the king of Spain gave grapes to everyone to eat on NewYears Eve.
Piatas
The piata can be found in all shapes and sizes. Mexicanpiatas are usually made of papier-mach covering aballoon filled with candies. The piata is hung by a ropeoverhead. A blindfolded person is spun around in circlesto confuse his or her sense of space. He or she is given a
stick to swing at the piata and break it open. For olderchildren, the rope to suspend the piata is used to bob it upand down. Once the piata is open, the guests rush in tocollect the goodies that have fallen from it. A blindfolded person
is spun around incircles to confuse hisor her sense of space.

Today, piatasare part of fun activities atfiestas (parties or celebrations). The history of the cultures using the piata is interesting. Originating inAfrica, the piata and its related ceremonies have been passed fromcountry to country. The Aztecs and the Chinese also had a ritual thatincluded a piata.
The Spanish piata came from Italy. The explorer Marco Polo is said tohave been the first to have brought the piata to Italy from China, in the14th century. Then Spanish explorers brought the piata to Mexico at thebeginning of the 16th century.

In Argentina, one of the traditional ways to celebrate a childs birthday isto gently pull on his or her earlobe for each year he or she has been alive. In Mexico and in Panama, a piata is usually part of thefiesta.
Many families in Spanish-speaking cultures have large birthday parties. The extended family and many children are invited. When the cake isserved the song Feliz cumpleaos (Happy Birthday) is sung. Below
