Learning Objective: I will explain procedures in text .
procedures - a set of steps that happen over time.
What will you explain?I will explain procedures in text.
Text – words that are published.• Technical manual text – text that explains
how to do something.• Historical text – text that explains history.• Science text – published work that has to
do with science.
When was the last time your parents bought something that they had to put together?
What was it?What is the purpose of the product? Why was it needed?
Technical ManualTechnical manual: Instructions on how to build
or operate something.
Examples:▪The instructions for assembling a bike▪Instructions for a video game▪Instructions for programming a phone
Partner Share Share with your partner the steps
to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Break it down into steps
Why is it important to know how to follow multiple step instructions of a basic technical manual or understand how
process works?
You need to know how to follow multiple step instructions of a basic technical manual so you can correctly assemble or operate technology.
Understanding process is important when you learn about technology, science, and history.
Steps to reading a technical manual
When entering a name or a phone number how do you erase a mistake?
a. Press the right soft key.b. Press erase.c. Press cancel.d. Press the left soft key
Step 1: Read the questions .Step 2: Read all the instructions. Look at the
text features (titles, pictures, captions)
Step 3: Answer the questions. Look for evidence in the instructions to prove you have the right answer.
Skill development
To create a phonebook entry which of the following do you do first.A. Scroll down to the end of the list of names.B. Enter the name.C. Enter the phone number.D. Press the right soft key to select a phone number
Step 1: Read the questions .Step 2: Read all the instructions. Look at the text
features (titles, pictures, captions)Step 3: Answer the questions. Look for evidence in
the instructions to prove you have the right answer.
Historical Text - text that deals with the history of a State, a Nation, or people. Example: California Missions.
Lets think about the processof making adobe bricks during this time.
1. What kinds of buildings were made using adobe bricks? Provide evidence

2. When do you jump in with your feet to mix the mud, water, and straw?
a. After you wet the Adobe brick mold.b. After you set the brick to dry out in the sun.c After you add the straw.d. The bricks were usually made using manure.
Step 1: Read the questions .Step 2: Read all the instructions. Look at the text features (titles, pictures, captions)Step 3: Answer the questions. Look for evidence in the instructions to prove you have the right answer.
How can we explain a procedure, or process, in Science?
Sedimentary RocksFor thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of our earth have been eroded--broken down and worn away by wind and water. These little bits of our earth are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of the rivers, lakes, and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock.
Sedimentary RocksStep 1. Sediment is produced by the
weathering of larger rocks and minerals.Step 2. The sediment is carried along by
the current until it is emptied into a slow moving body of water (ocean or lake).
Step 3. After many layers have settled pressure from the upper layers presses on the lower layers and hardens then to rock.
Step 4. Dissolved minerals in the water cement the particles of sediment together to finish the process.
Sedimentary RockWhat is the 1st step in the sedimentary rock process?
A) DepositionB) TransportationC) Weathering/ErosionD. Cementation/ Lithification
What step comes before cementation?
A) TransportationB) DepositionC) Cementation/ Lithification
D) Weathering/ Erosion

Why is understanding process important when we read?
ClosureWhat did we learn today? We learned how to explain procedures in text.
Why is understanding process important when we read?Understanding process helps us know that authors need to do extensive research when they publish works about technology, history, or science.
