Day Classes BATTLE CREEK

The American Civil WarWhat led to the outbreak of the bloodiest conflict in the history of North America? The United States was destined to have the greatest bloodbath in the country’s history due to the political, social, and cultural issues and attitudes that drove a wedge between America’s North and South. The seeds for this conflict began at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and for the next seventy years, two separate cultures tried to survive and co-exist under one flag and one government as one nation. The United States, under a new form of government, was an experiment that was untested and with such differences, could not bear the pressures of two different cultures that came to be the North and the South. The country tried to co-exist, but it took a war that tested the soul of the country to unite. Take a trip into the past with your instructor, Terry Newton, who will lead you on a journey from Philadelphia to the opening shots in Charleston as we examine the causes, issues and events that lead to the Civil War. Mondays • 4/22–4/29 • 2-4pm • $25 (member) $40 (non-member) • HSTY CB004-53 • Terry Newton • Rm: LT-304

European Dictatorships: The Rise of Stalin, Mussolini and HitlerThe economic problems that resulted from World War I and the Depression led people to question whether democratic government could improve their lives. They longed for a sense of security and strong direction for the future. As nations of people throughout the world struggled, what events lead to the rise of European Dictators? In this class, we will discuss conditions in Russia, Germany and Italy after WWI that set the stage for the dictators’ rise. You will learn about Stalinism, Fascism and Nazism in detail, dealing with the establishment and maintenance of power, the nature of party and state rule, the distribution of power, the purpose and impact of social and economic policies, opposition, and the significance of foreign policy and war. Comparisons and contrasts between the dictatorships are also highlighted in this riveting four-part course.
