~Plastics~Learning Intentions: We will learn about different kinds of plastic, their uses and how to form them
I will know I am successful if:• I understand the difference between thermoplastics and
thermosetting plastics
• I am able to suggest an appropriate plastic by looking at the properties
• I have practiced the shaping and finishing of acrylic by filing and cutting simple shapes

Types of Plastic
• Thermoplastics-Thermoplastics soften when heated.-They can be shaped when heated and harden as they cool.-When reheated they can be reshaped unless damaged be excessive heat
![Page 3: Learning Intentions: We will learn about different kinds of plastic, their uses and how to form them I will know I am successful if: I understand the difference.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062715/56649db65503460f94aa84c1/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Types of Plastic
• Thermosetting Plastics-This type of plastic SETS when heated-Thermosetting plastics cannot be returned to their original state by further heating
What does that mean for
recycling…?

Properties of Plastics• Thermosetting• Epoxy Resin-Hard, heat resistant, electrical insulator
• Melamine formaldehyde
-Hard, heat resistant, resists some chemicals and resists stains
• Thermoplastics• Acrylic-Hard, easy cut, scratches easy, brittle, polishes well
• PVC (Polyvinylchloride)-Hard and stiff, OR soft and flexible…

Uses of Plastics
• Did you know…? - The Plastic in every product is carefully selected for the job.
• Acrylic-Hard, easy cut, scratches easy, brittle• Polystyrene-Stiff, wide range of colours, very light, buoyant• PVC (Polyvinylchloride)-Hard and stiff, OR soft and flexible…

What Plastic are we using today?
Acrylic!
![Page 8: Learning Intentions: We will learn about different kinds of plastic, their uses and how to form them I will know I am successful if: I understand the difference.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062715/56649db65503460f94aa84c1/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Marking out your acrylic
• The acrylic will have a protective layer on it• This prevents scratching.• When covered you can mark with a
pencil or pen• Unprotected sheets are best marked
with a felt-tipped pen!

Let’s Get Shaping!!
![Page 11: Learning Intentions: We will learn about different kinds of plastic, their uses and how to form them I will know I am successful if: I understand the difference.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062715/56649db65503460f94aa84c1/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The Strip Heater
• Best used for bending narrow strips of acrylic• Protective cover is removed • Area to be bent is marked with a pen• After heating, the acrylic can be shaped by using a jig
![Page 12: Learning Intentions: We will learn about different kinds of plastic, their uses and how to form them I will know I am successful if: I understand the difference.](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062715/56649db65503460f94aa84c1/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Oven
• For more complex shaping• For 3mm thick acrylic, the oven is set to 170 degrees C• Heated for approximately 15-20 minutes before forming
Approximately 20 minutes

Were we successful?
• I understand the difference between thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics
• I am able to suggest an appropriate plastic by looking at the properties
• I have practiced the shaping and finishing of acrylic by filing and cutting simple shapes
