PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGES Kite Day - A Matariki Celebration
This term we have been learning about Flight. Last week we held a
kite day to help celebrate Matariki and share some of our learning.
Students from across the school were
involved in making kites of all kinds.
Different materials , structures and
designs were used to create a colourful
array of kites. Here are some pictures of
Rangitoto Team ready to fly their kites.
Liberty of Being Me
Four of our Year 8 students and their mums/grandmothers
came along to this workshop on Tuesday evening last week.
These students participated in activities designed to
strengthen the relationship and communication between
mother and daughter, and encourage critical thinking in
regards to media and self image.
“I learnt so much about my Mum that I didn’t know before “-
Dharma Special thanks to Mrs Stride who co-ordinated the
evening
Professional Learning
The dedicated staff at our school are
always involved in ongoing learning.
Our incredible bunch of teacher aides
have begun learning about OneNote
and how this tool helps support both
teachers and students in their daily
work. Here they are engrossed in their
online introductory modules.
Computational Thinking in the Junior School
A small group of students from the junior school are learning to
code using programs such as Moana, Hour of Code and Lightbot
this year. This term we have begun
using our knowledge and experience
from the coding programs to describe
position and direction of movement,
as well as, interpreting others’
descriptions of position and
movement on mats and mazes.
Kia ora koutou,
Thanks to those parents who attended our
Junior Three Way Conferences last week and
we look forward to welcoming our Year 4 to 8
parents to our Student Led Conferences this
week. Being able to share our learning with
whanau is something we value greatly.
Our students have been involved in many
learning experiences and have experienced
many successes over the past term. Sports
days, academic competitions and fundraising
efforts just to name a few. A big thank you to
the staff, parents and whanau who help make
these experiences happen for our children.
Your efforts and commitment are greatly
appreciated
We would like to extend a warm welcome to
two new members of staff - Malcom Ngere
Ngere and Christie Moore. They will be
working with students to help support their
learning.
We wish all our Opaheke whanau a restful
and relaxing break. We look forward to a busy
and exciting Term 3!

NORTH COUNTIES RUGBY REPRESENT COUNTIES AT ZONE COMPETITION 11 of our Year 7 & 8 students were part of the North Counties Team who went through to represent Counties at Auckland Zone last Tuesday 27th June. The boys played excellent rugby and after pool play they made it through the the semi-finals where they played a very strong Sacred Heart team. Although they made some strong plays they were not good enough to topple the Sacred Heart team who went on to win the tournament. The North Counties team met Glenn Eden in the play off for 3rd and 4th. They played their best game of the day and stormed home to win and place 3rd. Well done boys!
A big thank you to all the parents who came along to support the team and to their coaches - Mr Cantwell and Mr Wickers, your time was greatly appreciated. Well done—Joe, Amore, Matthew, Kelton, Teiti, Timothy, Campbell, Quinlan, Brynn, Joshua and Calum.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
WIG WEDNESDAY - FUNDRAISING FOR CHILD CANCER FOUNDATION Wig Wednesday is a new fundraising event that Opaheke School participated in for the first time to raise awareness for child cancer. Staff and students were encouraged to dress up in funny and funky wigs bringing a coin to support this worthy cause. A special thank you to Aleksandra (Kosta’s Mum) for her time and kindness that day. We raised $235 towards this worthy cause.
CHEER GIRLS WIN GOLD! Kenzie, Maddison, Nikki, Emma and Kaylee attended cheerfest last weekend and each of their teams won gold! Teams: Kenzie - Blackjack, Maddison, Emma and Nikki - Supremacy, Kaylee - Tiaras
Blackjack won overall with the highest score of the competition!
AUCKLAND CITY MISSION - ONE CAN TWO CAN APPEAL Our school councillors would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Auckland City Mission’s Can
appeal. Last week we gathered enough cans to fill four boxes . The food will be used in emergency
food parcels delivered to individuals and families in desperate need.
Schools throughout Auckland took part in the appeal.
40 HOUR FAMINE - SUPPORTING SYRIAN REFUGEES Over the weekend of 9-11 June, our students participated in this years
famine by giving up food, TV, or social media, sleeping in a box, washing
cars, and living out of backpacks, to raise money for World Vision’s life-
saving work with Syrian refugees as part of World Vision’s 40 Hour
Famine. $1089 was collected at school in addition to money that was
collected online. Great effort everyone. A special congratulations to
Tessa, Tom and Ty for being our top three fundraisers!

Our Opaheke School Netball Club was visited by three of the Northern Star’s players for a training session a few weeks ago. Leana de Bruin (former Silver Fern), Afa Rusivakula, and Sulu Fitzpatrick came down to the school courts and took our girls for a warm up, skills based session, some netball games, Q&A session and some auto-graphs to finish. It was so amazing to have them come down and spend some time and inspire our young netballers. They were friendly, knowledgeable, super tall and taught the players some new skills!
Also - look out for some of your fellow Opaheke School students on Sky Sports, as they shot a small piece on the Northern Stars visit and it is being replayed a fair bit currently.
Thanks to the Northern Stars

Looking for a way to support school’s fundraising efforts? – then maybe this is it. We are looking for someone to help with the PTA Calendar Art fundraiser. This would entail a few mornings in the latter part of Term 3 collating orders, counting money, matching artwork to orders and then distributing the calendars once they are returned to school in Term 4. You wouldn’t be working alone and times can be arranged to suit. If interested please contact the school office.
Dogs on the School Grounds
We have noticed that some parents are bringing dogs with them when they are
delivering/picking up children from school.
Dogs are not permitted on the school grounds even when they are on a leash. This is a health
and safety issue and we ask all parents to leave
dogs at home when visiting the school.

Room 24—Year 4 have made kites for Matariki. We had great fun designing our kites
based on the traditional manu tukutuku used by Māori
This is how we made our manu tukutuku. Materials: Kebab sticks (6 per child), plastic shopping bags (one each), vivid markers of different colours, a lot of different
coloured feathers, string, sellotape, scissors
Our materials. Miss Hamill helped to cut
our plastic bags.
Then we made a frame out of our
kebab sticks.
We coloured in our bags with
vivid pens and attached it
around our frame.
After that we attached feathers
on each corner and also on the
tail.
Finally we had beautiful kites to
share. We felt proud of what we had
made.
