Respectful Relationships As mentioned in previous newsletters our school is a coordinating school for the im-plementation of the Respectful Relationships Program. This program aims to ad-dress family violence through education - to model respect in all areas of the school, how we interact and treat each other. Teachers will be supported to deliver the initiative with age-appropriate teaching and learning materials. These evidence-based materials are designed to enable teachers to develop student’s social and emotional capabilities, build positive, healthy and respectful relationships, make responsible decisions and create positive gender relations. The initiative will also provide resources to best support young people who are affected by family violence. Community information sessions will be

held later in the year as the program is rolled out.

No parent or carer I have ever met wants their child to be a victim or perpetrator of family violence! Mr David Sutton, Principal Maryborough Education Centre Mallee Education Cluster The Mallee Cluster Principals met this week here at Ouyen to continue the conversation about further developing our cluster with the view to improving outcomes for Mallee Students. Our work, supported by the CEP and a grant from the Buckland Foundation, will strengthen what is already great about our schools as well as widening opportunities for our students. Amazing Souvlakis, with our own home made tzatziki

sauce, warmed us through Thursday

morning (in year 11 Food Studies).

A lemon, garlic, oregano and bay

leaf marinade imparted a special

tang to both the Lamb and Chicken

fillings, which had the traditional

accompaniments.

Fresh fruit complemented the Blueberry jelly whip and was

popular as well.

SWIMMINGSWIMMINGSWIMMINGSWIMMING Five students travelled to Melbourne on Anzac day to compete in the SSV State Swimming Finals at the

Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) on Wednesday 26th April. A chilly day made the competition in the outside pool quite challenging for both spectators and swimmers. The wind and intermittent rain meant that the swimmers were kept inside until their races were about to begin and they

needed to make a dash for shelter and warmth after they finished. Laura was the first to swim,

competing in the G18-20 Yrs 50m Breaststroke, placing 6th with a faster time than she swam in the Swan Hill

qualifiers. The next swimmer was Peter, who

competed in the B18-20 Yrs 50m Free-style finishing 7th, with a PB of 26.83. There was a break of a couple of hours before the Girls 18-20Yrs 4x50m Relay took to the pool deck. An exciting race eventuated as the Lauren, Laura, Lucy and Megan swam competitively in a full field of 8 teams. The first 4 teams were very close together, with our girls following a little way behind. They also improved their time from that swam at

Swan Hill. Congratulations to our State Swimmers who trained over their holiday break and represented our school with enthusiasm and endeavour.

& Peter Darley

Thank you to Kim and Anthony Darley and Amanda Hayter who travelled to Melbourne to support our students.

The Year 9 PE class is currently undertaking a SEPEP (Sport Education in Physical Education Program) unit, playing European Handball. SEPEP is a student centred approach to Physical Education which takes the best parts of community sport to enhance student learning. The philoso-phy behind SEPEP is for students to experience a program which mirrors “real life” sport. The stu-dents are divided into teams and each student has a role to play in the organisation and run-ning of a competition. Each week, the Publicity Officers are responsible for writing a report and taking photographs. SCORING - Points achieved by each team is not only based on wins, losses and goals scored in the matches. Teams also gain points for being in correct uni-form, bringing all equip-ment required to the game, warming up properly, scoring, refer-eeing, preparing match reports and taking pho-tos. Match reports will begin in next week’s newsletter.

The SSV Mallee Cross Country will be held in Ouyen on Tuesday 17th May. Well done to the majority of squad members who are on track to complete the training requirements for the Inter-school Cross Country event. It is great to see these students making every ef-fort to prepare themselves to perform at their best. Any students unable to train for any reason should have the courtesy to dis-cuss this with me and not just absent themselves from training.

Meeting – Our next meeting will be at 7:00p.m. on Monday, May 8th. We will meet in the Conference Room. For those still getting to know the school – that is next to Mrs. Dawes’ office. Feel free to come and ask questions, share ideas, and help support parents, students and staff. Apologies can be made through Kylie Zanker, Raelene Vine or the school office. Got teenagers? Those with teenagers will recognise that relation-ships and interactions with them aren’t always easy as they bump their way from childhood to adult-hood. MRCC’s School Focussed Youth Service is sponsoring a forum called Managing Angry Adoles-cents Differently. This is a free two-hour ses-sion at Blackburn Park [in the Club Rooms] for parents and carers of teenagers next Wednesday, May 10th. Delivered by Kenneth Nathan it starts at 7:15 and finishes 9:15 – 9:45 [supper in-cluded]. It aims to equip parents/ carers with knowledge and skills to manage angry or violent teens. The focus is to understand teens’ tempera-ments from a biological and cultural perspective, and look at ways to de-escalate anger and set bound-aries. Kenneth Nathan is very experienced in this field and runs another program, Managing the Bull, that Parents Association is interested in. Bookings through Stephen Williams 0437752528 or [email protected] or contact the school office. There will be a series of events at Blackburn Park over the whole week for professionals who work with teens. Wednesday night is the only parent ses-sion. Catering May 13th – Jan Torney & Deb Vallance have asked PA to provide afternoon tea for John Archibald’s 90th birthday at Blackburn Park [Interleague bye day]. Prep, 1 and 2 families have the privilege of this one. Tamara Allender is the contact person on 0499272855. See Memberships- Annual membership for Parents Association is now due.
