WelcomeWelcome to a wealth of opportunity in adult learning .

We are pleased to be offering another packed brochure of adult and community learning courses and activities, providing a wide range of choice throughout the borough .

The council takes pride in supporting residents and are committed to maintaining low fees on courses and support learning opportunities that do not enjoy financial support from central government, but which are valued by our residents .

During a recent Ofsted Inspection, Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning was graded as good overall with some outstanding features . Ofsted commented that, ‘A strong feature of the service is the safe and welcoming atmosphere and high quality accommodation .’

They mentioned that ‘Learners across all subject areas make good progress, gain confidence and develop personal, employment and social skills .’

Our brochure this year is divided into two sections:•PersonalandDevelopmentalLearning•LearningforSkillsandEmployment

The Personal and Developmental Learning section explores both formal and informal courses in order to enrich lives, communities and the economy .

The Learning for Skills and Employment section of the brochure has details on a range of courses that lead to a national qualification and can get you started in your career and see you through to fully-qualified status .

Our aim, in partnership with the Skills Funding Agency and YPLA, is to give you an opportunity to undertake a high quality course of study, be it for your own personal pleasure, to gain a vocational qualification, or to enhance your employment opportunities .

I wish everyone well with their chosen course of study .

Cllr David SimmondsCabinet Member for Education & Children’s Services

Please note due to the full rollout of Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning’s accommodation strategy to upgrade all adult learning centres, the location of courses described in this brochure may need to change .

If the location of your course needs to be changed you will be advised on enrolment .

Where locations are changed the Service will, wherever possible, ensure that the nearest available centre to the one advertised will be used .

Hillingdon Adult and Community Learning | Courses 2011/2012 | Please contact the relevant centre for your chosen course 5

Page 6: Learning for skills and employment

Welcome to this section of the brochure, which gives you lots of information about our range of courses that lead to a national qualification . We have courses that get you started in your career and see you through to fully-qualified status . Some of these are short courses of less than one term, especially those that introduce a subject . Others are longer, more demanding courses that lead to higher level qualifications . Our tutors are dual professionals, qualified both in their subject areas and as teachers . We have high expectations of ourselves and the standards we set for our learners . Have a look on the website for more specific course information, but here’s an introduction to give you a flavour of what’s available .

If you’d like to work professionally with children and young people in a pre-school or day care setting, why not try one of our Certificate or Diploma courses? If you’re already volunteering in a school and would like a qualification to help you get a permanent position then our Supporting Teaching and Learning courses might be for you .

Would you rather work from home as a Registered Childminder? Then come and join our childminding course, Setting up a Home-based Childcare Service (CYPOP5), the first stop in your professional childminding career . This course allows you to apply for your registration with Ofsted and we work closely with the London Borough of Hillingdon Early Years Team who will support you in your Ofsted application .

Maybe you’re keen to volunteer in your free time but are not sure where to begin . We run courses that support you in your role as a community volunteer and allow you to achieve a qualification at the same time . Perhaps you want to volunteer to help your child improve their English or Maths, or to support

adult learners with those skills . We’d love to meet you, as we run a wide volunteering programme and we’d appreciate your help . Come and see us about one of our volunteering courses and we’ll tell you all about it .

Have you always wanted to go to university and study for a degree but thought you were under-qualified? Come and ask us about our range of programmes that lead you towards that university entrance, such as Access to HE . We work in partnership with Bucks New University to ensure that our courses are relevant and at the right level to help you to move onto degree level study .

Perhaps you’ve always had a flair for floristry and want to build a career doing something you enjoy? Have a look at our wide range of high quality floristry courses or pop along and talk to us at one of our Open Days .

Don’t worry if your study skills are rusty or you’ve forgotten those school maths . We can offer you just the right Study Support course to brush up those essay writing and maths skills so you’re ready to move into your career .

Maybe you’re interested in complementary therapies or perhaps you’re a good listener . Have a look at our introductory Complementary Therapy courses to see if they’re for you . We also offer a range of Counselling courses, from beginners to higher levels, with industry-based qualifications to get you on the road to joining the profession . Drop into an Open Day or telephone to make an initial assessment appointment for more information .

Are you looking for work? If you’d like to update your CV or would just like some support in searching

out the right position for you, why not come along to one of our FREE drop-in Job Shop sessions . We can help you brush up those rusty interview skills in one 2-hour session, but if you’d like a bit more support you can go on to join our Work Club, where you can meet other job-seekers for support and encouragement in getting that job .

Planning to start your own business? Our Enterprising Attitudes workshop might be just the thing for you . This two-day workshop provides you with lots of helpful information when starting your own business and includes visits by guest speakers who share their expertise with you to help you avoid some of those common mistakes . If you’d like a bit more support, you can join our Enterprise Club, where like-minded people can come together regularly to compare experiences and ideas and to grow that all-important business network .

We also run a wide range of courses for adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, including our full-time Working in a Supported Environment course, a demanding course that leads to a national qualification in Horticulture, Catering and/or Business Administration . Why not come along to one of our ALDD Open Days to find out more about the choices we can offer you?

Could you boost your confidence by brushing up your reading, writing, spelling or grammar? We run Everyday English and Maths classes at family-friendly times throughout the borough . We also run English classes for speakers of other languages (ESOL) which cater for beginner learners through to improvers and beyond . Just call 0208 569 1614 to

book your appointment to come and see us so we can make sure you choose the right class for you .

Are you on Jobseekers Allowance? Course fees vary depending on individual circumstances so give us a call or pop in for a chat for some guidance about course hours and costs to help make the right decision for you .

We meet every learner individually prior to enrolment on our qualification courses and identify their starting point to make sure the course is the right choice for them . Just telephone a centre to book into an initial assessment session or drop into one of our Open Days to meet the team and get more information about the right course for you .

Adults with Learning Difficulties and/or DisabilitiesHillingdon Adult and Community Learning is proud of the range and quality of the courses it provides for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities .

We are pleased to announce some new and exciting opportunities in response to learners’ expressed needs in addition to our established programme .

For the chance to learn new skills and meet new people in a friendly environment, one of our Creative Skills courses will be right for you . These run in 10-week blocks, for 2-hours per session, starting in September, January and April .

From September we are running a new suite of Towards Independence courses .If you’d like to improve your English and IT skills or learn how to manage your money, one of our Personal and Social Development courses could be for you .

We also offer a full-time Foundation Learning course, WISE programme, over 3 days a week that develops vocational skills in Horticulture, Business Administration or Catering . This is a demanding course that includes classroom-based activities and a weekly practical placement, whilst improving English, Maths and IT Skills .

All the opportunities listed above and contained within the course listings are suitable for adult learners of any age, however, we feel that our Foundation Learning course is particularly relevant for learners aged 16-25, who are leaving school and wish to pursue a college vocational course .

Learners are able to access extra learning support and use adaptive equipment to suit their individual needs and help them to achieve their learning goals .

Adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities may also like to join our thriving advocacy group, the ALDD Forum, which meets regularly to discuss issues related to their experiences within Adult Education .

We’d love to see you at one of our ALDD Open Days and we’ll help you to choose the best course for you or contact our Curriculum Office on 01895 671967 .
