Fixed Standalone Fixed Stackable

100/200 Series

• Enables the inter connection of multiple physical devices (chassis) to form a single logical device

• Devices in stack are managed as one device

– One Ip address – Serial console management – network based management (Telnet, SSH EWS) – One configuration – saves time and money during

installation

• Stack topology is based on a single “master”, one “backup”, and multiple “slaves”

• Chain or ring topology

• Advantages

• Add ports to switch with no interruption

• Add resiliency – LAGs on different chassis

• Resilient core switch – two interfaces to router

• Easy config and software update • Single IP management

• Troubleshoot, configure, and manage entire stack as single entity – Spanning Tree, Port/VLAN mirror, LAGs, ACLs, QoS

• Stack-plane Dual Ring Architecture – High throughput – Stacking Resiliency—switch can be removed with

minimal affect to rest of the stack

• Most of the above features are not possible in a “clustered” stacking setup

• Stacking ports are not treated as regular user ports. Running a stacking protocol to effieciently switch traffic between members of stack

• These ports cannot be used by the user in any way, including:

– They cannot be members of trunks.

– The user cannot define them to be a member of a VLAN.

– No statistics are collected/visible to the user.

– Port settings cannot be defined on them.

True Stacking – unified control and management plane
