Learning Centre Leaders’ Newsletter 23rd March 2018 Early Years Learning Centre The second week of the early years swimming program was a huge success. Once again I want to thank all the staff involved and all the students for participating in such an important school program. Thank you to all our family and friends who also took the time to volunteer and support during the two- week program. Over the last two weeks teachers have had the opportunity to attend SSG meetings with their child’s teacher and support teams at school to discuss their learning for 2018. These are an extremely important meeting to collaborate across home and school to ensure to best possible learning for all of our students throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who has already participated in these meetings. If you haven’t yet arranged a meeting, please speak with your child’s classroom teacher to organise these. The Prep/Foundation students Individual Learning Plans will come home next Wednesday with their 2018 goals. Please take the time to read these and contact classroom teachers if there are any questions. Tuesday is Harmony day, which is a fantastic school event. The students are encouraged to wear orange or cultural clothing on this day. The specialist team have organised a fantastic day for the students. Term 1 is drawing to a close and has been hugely successful in the Early Years. All the students have settled into their new classes and for some a new school and have engaged in some fantastic learning opportunities. Early Years Learning Centre The second week of the early years swimming program was a huge success. Once again I want to thank all the staff involved and all the students for participating in such an important school program. Thank you to all our family and friends who also took the time to volunteer and support during the two-week program.

Over the last two weeks teachers have had the opportunity to attend SSG meetings with their child’s teacher and support teams at school to discuss their learning for 2018. Middle Years Learning CentreThe last few weeks of school have been very busy in the Middle Years with swimming in weeks 6 and 7, SSG meetings in weeks 7 and 8 and planning week.

Thank you to all of the Teachers, ES, students, parents, carers and volunteers who attended swimming and made the experience possible for our students. Students had a wonderful time and learned important water safety and swimming skills.

Thank you to all of the parents and teachers who have been involved in SSG meetings to discuss Individual Learning Plans and goals for students. This is a very valuable opportunity to involve parents and carers in a child’s learning and support students to be successful in achieving their learning goals. It’s also an important opportunity to engage Allied Health and Wellbeing to be able to best facilitate learning and wellbeing at school and at home.

We have also had a very exciting announcement with the Student Representative Council positions being determined. I would like to say a huge congratulations to all students who were successful in being elected by their peers. I would like to say a special congratulation to our new Middle Years SRC representations Kyah H, Lah K’Baw, Tristan D and Toaiva. This is a very important role in the school as these students will be representing their peers in the school and the community.

The end of the term is coming up quickly and we look

forward to end of term celebrations for Harmony Day in week 9 Tuesday 27th March, 9-2:30pm. This is a whole school and family event that we would like to see students, family and carers attend. There will be lots of fun activities planned for everyone and you are encouraged to dress in cultural dress.

Groups 24, 25, 32, 33 & 34Welcome to week 8 everyone! The term is nearly coming to an end! It has absolutely flown as well. The students and teachers have had a wonderful term full of excitement, excursions, lots of work and fun activities. We would like to thank all the parents/carers who came in during swimming week to help out! Students from GroupS 24, 25, 32, 33 and 34 went to the You Yang’s for an excursions today. Everyone enjoyed exploring Australian flora and fauna and walking around the reserve.

Thank you to all the parents who attended SSG’s with their child’s teacher this week and last week. Next week is last week of term, and the students last day is on Thursday. We hope all students have a long, fun and restful break! We look forward to another busy and exciting term next term!

BRC NewsIt has been a wonderful Term 1 at the Bethany Road Campus. All of our programs are up and running and students are still out exploring the local community, today visiting the Wyndham Resource Centre, Pacific Werribee library and Plaza. On Friday 23rd March a selection of students will be attending the practice of the Formula One Grand Prix. This will be a great

opportunity for students to travel there via multiple modes of public transport to the event and then take the slow ride back.

On Tuesday the 13th March Kaw Clay, Shira, Andrew Knox and myself took a day trip to Sydney where we attended the opening of the Harmony Art Collective exhibition. Students were apart of a two-day workshop last year with popular Artist Georgia Hill. Students saw their artwork displayed in the heart of Darling

Quarter this was a great thrill for the students who were very proud of their achievements. We are hoping this artwork will be at the campus permanently once the exhibition is complete.

There will be a Beyond Blue fundraiser on the last day of Term 1 where students can wear out of uniform clothes however we do encourage them to wear blue and donate a gold coin to the cause. Students from the Charity Social Enterprise class have decided this is an important charity to support young people.

I encourage all parents of Later Years students to attend the Careers Expo on Tuesday 27th March from 12:30pm onwards at the BRC campus. This will provide families and students with great insight into what pathways are available post school. It is never to early or to late to have these conversations with your child. There will be activities and a BBQ running from 12:30 – 1:30pm on the day; the expo will conclude at 5pm.

Harmony Day celebrations took place on Wednesday at BRC. Students hosted music of different cultures, sports from around the world, a range of food was on offer and students could celebrate diversity with a photo booth. This was a great celebration of diversity and harmony.

Congratulations also to the SRC students who were elected to represent the campus. You will all do a wonderful job in your role and the staff look forward to working with you.

On behalf of the teaching staff at BRC we wish everyone a safe and happy Easter break. We look forward to sharing more great learning at BRC in Term 2.

From The Career Coach

You are invited to the Post School Options Expo and Workshops that will be held at the VCAL and BRC campus on the 27th March from 12:40pm.

The Warringa Expo & Workshop is an information forum aimed to provide students, their families and carers with appropriate and timely information and advice on:

• Transition Planning• Career Pathways• Employment Services and Options• Further Education and Training• Funding Eligibility• Advocacy and Information Services• Employability Skills• Life skills and Community Access Services

There will be a broad range of organizations and services will be exhibiting information stalls. The Expo targets Years 7-12 students and their parents.

On Tuesday all the Later Years students will come down and enjoy the activities that the BRC classroom teachers have organized, including a BBQ, music, sphereo, structured sports games, arts and craft.

After lunch students, parents and staff will have the opportunity

to take part in workshops prepared by the service providers. Classes will take part in the workshops and move from class to class around the campus until they have participated in a few of the scheduled workshops.

After school the service providers will gather in the BRC multipurpose room and the Expo will commence from 3pm. Here parents can catch up with any service provider whose workshop they missed or simply ask specific questions to help them decide about services they would like their child to engage in.

Remember that the NDIS roll out is fast approaching and this is the perfect time to start learning about the services you can access in your local community so that you are well equipped for your child NDIS meeting.

Are you ready for NDIS?

Amaze in partnership with the City of Wyndham is hosting a series of workshops which aim to increase the capacity of people with autism and their families to exercise choice and control in working under the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which will be introduced in Western Melbourne in October 2018.

The FOUR free workshops will cover the following important topics: • The NDIS • Pre-planning • Writing a carer and participant statement • Setting and writing goals • Effective communication • Advocacy • Community connections and peer support

Parent responsibility for having a School

iPad at home:Please remember the iPad is the property of Warringa Park School and you have signed an agreement to ensure the care of the iPad.Below is a list of key reminders when taking the iPad home.

• All iPads must come to school fully charged every day. If the iPad does not come to school fully charged, it will be kept at school for a specified period of time, or indefinitely if this is a recurring issue.

• The iPad must remain in the school-issued protective cover at all times.

• Cleaning of the screen will be attended to by staff any time at your request, NOT by parent/carer or student.

• Students should have clean hands when using iPad.

• Students /parent/carers must not access or alter the iPad settings.

• Find my iPad must ALWAYS be turned on.

• IPads should NEVER be left in cars.

• If an iPad is left at home for more than 2 days it will be placed in locked mode until return.

• If iPad or iPad cover is broken at home an invoice for payment will be sent home and the iPad will stay at school until payment is made.

• The iPad is for the sole use of the student of Warringa Park School. Siblings, friends and other family members are NOT permitted to use the iPad for any purpose.

• If you are going overseas or holiday’s school must be notified if you intend to take iPad with you.

From Nurse Nicole Hi Everyone,Immunisation: Students with a 2005 Birthdate will be offered HPV(2 doses) , Dipheria/Tetanus Vaccines in 2018. Epilepsy Plans: Please ensure epilepsy plans are taken to your next Neurologist appointment and signed by the neurologist and yourselves. I like to keep these plans as current and relevant as possible. If any student has had a recent seizure please contact me, so I can update their plans.

Asthma Plans: All students with a diagnosis of Asthma will be given the New Asthma Plans for 2018. Please take to your GP and have them filled in and return to school as soon as possible.

Toilet Training Workshop: The continence foundation will be conducting a parent workshop on:Tuesday 20th March 2018 at 11am -12pm

This workshop is an informal round table discussion about the steps required to toilet train children with special needs. It is a five step process which we as a school follow. Please register your attendance with reception in 2018, there is a maximum of 15 people.

School Dental Program: Phase 1: 7th-10th May 2018 Dental Check Up & CleanPhase 2: 7th-8th June 2018 Treatment if required

School Dental will be setting up their Dental Van at our School for the above dates. School Dental operates under the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which is a child dental program that provides eligible children and teenagers aged between 2 and 17 with up to $1000 for basic dental services, capped over two consecutive calendar years.

Dental Van: The Royal Dental Hospital Dental Van will still visit once a term for our more complex needs students and for non-eligible families

Glasses for Kids Program: The Glasses for Kids program provides free vision screening for Prep to Year 3 students. The program is being delivered as a partnership between State Schools Relief and a range of optometry providers, with the support of the Department of Education and Training. Free Vision Screening: 28th May-31st May (9am-3pm)(Rescheduled from February 2018)

Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me. Please note:• All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box.• If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier. • If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.

Drink Bottles: I encourage all parents to ensure their students bring a drink bottle to school. This enables staff to identify how much each child is drinking and therefore minimise any health effects that arise through not drinking enough, especially in the hotter months. Spare Clothes: Please ensure your child has a spare set of clothes in their bags at all times. Change of underwear, socks, shorts/pants, T-shirt) for emergencies.

Donations: We welcome any school uniform donations especially tracksuit pants, shorts and t-shirts of all sizes. If you have spare school uniform/clothing that has been given to your student through the year, we would appreciate this to be returned to the school. Nicole

Those Families who are not eligible can still access the program at subsidised cost. School Dental will contact you directly once you have filled in the form expressing your interest.

What is MyTime? MyTime is a peer support group for parents and carers supporting children under 16 years of age with a disability, developmental delay or chronic medical condition. Who is MyTime for? Parents (mums, dads), grandparents, foster parents, or a primary carer receiving or applying for Carers Allowance. What will I get out of MyTime?
