Nursing Students Organize Wellness Fair. Nursing Students from Renee Dugger’s Gerontology class organized a health and wellness fair for seniors in Posey County. In addition to the Nursing students, the fair included Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Social Work students. The fair was held on February 25th from 11-2. Turnout was wonderful — students taught the seniors about fall prevention, safe lifting, joint protection, energy conservation, exercise, nutrition, and medication. In addition seniors were offered free cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI and vision screenings. Special thanks to CAPE, the New Harmony Town Council, and CNHP for sponsoring this fair.

“I realized that I’ve got to

get up and get moving...a

great credit to your chosen

profession!”

The Future of Technology By Mike Fetscher

Technology is evolving faster than ever before and the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of Southern Indiana will continue to lead in the integration of the latest trends in technology into the classroom. The days of carrying 5 pounds books in one’s backpack may be numbered as e-readers become increasingly popular. Currently around 15 million e-readers exist with a projection of 60 million e-readers in just four years. In the future a student may have their entire collection of text books on an e-reader weighing just slightly over a pound. While they will still be looking at text and charts --imagine having instructional videos and demonstrations enhancing student studies within the e-reader. Some e-books may offer quizzes every few pages so the students and instructors can gain immediate feedback on whether or not they are comprehending the material and that feedback could also be used by instructors to focus on certain parts of the curriculum to enhance the students’ knowledge of a subject. Collaboration amongst the students will also increase as they work on projects together. In the future the term “together” will no longer mean sitting in the same room. Using features like Face Time will provide the same experience as sitting next to one another even though they may be hundreds if not thousands of miles apart. Other apps on the horizon could replace the traditional LCD projector and screens in classrooms to sharing presentations via Bluetooth to other devices right in the students and participants hands. No longer will the need to call tech support for a blown projector bulb be necessary. There is also apps available that allow instructors take attendance, put names with faces faster, as well as integrations with USI’s course delivery system, Blackboard. What will the future hold, it’s tough to tell but be assured the College of Nursing and Health Professions will be leading the way.

App Corner - Dropbox By Mike Fetscher

Have you ever been somewhere and needed the presentation that you did the night before, only to find that you left it at home or your apartment? Well, now you can keep your files in a central location so you can access them from any computer or even your smart phone. Dropbox lets you drag and drop files from your computer or smart phone and stores synchronized files in the cloud so they’re available at any machine on which you’ve installed Dropbox including iPhones, iPads and Droid smart phones. You can also share folders with others. This is a good feature when collaborating with others that might be located in another city or state on a project. Dropbox gives you 2GB of storage free and if you need more Dropbox offers several pricing plans. For more information on Dropbox, be sure to visit their homepage at Dropbox.com If you find a helpful app and would like to share - please contact Janet Selby at [email protected].

Apple News By Danny Beavin

After months of rumors and speculation Apple fans can be rest assured that they will be able to get their hands on the new iPad 2 as early as March 11th. The iPad 2 will have the same 9.7-inch display but will be 33% thinner than the previous model. It will have front-facing and rear-facing cameras and Apple's new 1GHz dual-core A5 processor. This will make the new tablet twice as fast in processing power and 9 times faster in the graphics department. With the addition of cameras, the next-generation iPad will be capable of making FaceTime calls with other FaceTime-capable devices. The rear-facing camera can capture 720p HD video. Despite its thinner casing, the iPad 2 will have the same battery life as the first generation of 10 hours and 30 days of stand-by time.
