Monster Chef by Nick Bland Monday Task 1
YouTube link https://youtu.be/67sAb7GBY4E Watch Miss Dawson read the story Monster Chef by
Nick Bland.
Now read the story yourself Marcel was a monster of medium size, with crotchety horns and googly eyes. Like most other monsters he worked every night, giving the neighborhood children a fright. His climbing was perfect, his creeping was good, and he hid very well just like all monsters should. He was lumpy and grumpy and suitably hairy but Marcel had a problem, he just wasn’t scary. Night after night whatever he did, he just couldn’t scare a single kid. He couldn’t scare Abbie, he couldn’t scare Bob. He was totally hopeless at doing his job. When he came home at the end of the night, a smile crossed his face as he flicked on the light. He kicked off his shoes, hung his hat on a hook, went into the kitchen and started to cook. He stirred and he poured and he plucked with delight, forgetting entirely his horrible night. He baked and he sizzled, he fried and he boiled, with anything rotten or crawling or spoiled. He made earthworm spaghetti and hot cactus pies with smelly sock soup and a cockroach surprise. There were rotten bananas on apple core cake and a dollop of sludge on a beetle shell bake. From each perfect dish he took one little bite, and saved all of the rest for the following night. When it grew dark, Marcel went to work, looking for suitable places to lurk. He climbed through a window and quietly hid. Then the door slowly opened and in rode a kid. He hopped off his trike and he pulled out the chair But Marcel was too late his food had been seen the brave looking kid had turned totally green. He screamed and he ran away into the night and that’s how Marcel gave his real first fright. So he horrified Abbie and he terrified Bob. Marcel at long last could take pride I his job. Now he’s opened a restaurant called Monster’s Delight, where he still gets to give the occasional fright. And for those who are snarling and snorting their snouts, he just cooks for them…….. some boiled Brussel sprouts.

Task 4 – Monday – Addition word problems
Sometimes we get given math problems, but they are written as a sentence using words as well. By finding the important information in these sentences and drawing a picture you can easily work out the answer.
Click this link to view our video showing you how: https://youtu.be/nifxfb_Ef5s or scan the QR code
For example: Billy had 8 cakes and Sarah had 7. How many cakes were there altogether?
1. Circle the important information
Billy had 8 cakes and Sarah had 7. How many cakes were there altogether?
2. Use this information to draw and then write a math equation;
8 + 7 =
3. Use your known strategies to work out the question.
I know that I can take break the 7 into (5 + 2) and move the 2 over to the 8 making it 10 + 5. This is now a very easy question to do in my head.
8 + 7 = 15
1. Jim and John both had 6 cupcakes each. How many cupcakes are there altogether?
