Reading strategies for Informational Texts:
Skimming Scanning Precise Reading
Skimming- Gain an overview or a general idea of the text
(800-1000wpm)
How to Skim
You want to get an overall idea about the contents of the article.
Practice reading quickly to get a main idea. Focus on title, headings and subheadings as
you slowly turn the pages. Think about the focus of the article as you
skim over highlighted text, charts, images and captions.
Read the first and last lines of paragraphs; focus on introduction and conclusion of the text.
Scanning- Locate specific information or answer a question (1200wpm- 100%
accuracy obtaining desired information)
Anticipation Guide
Mark each statement as true or false. Be prepared to defend your decision.
Farm income (gross and net) is the key
measure of farm success and viability. Oregon’s farmland covers over 16 million
acres. A land use system cannot protect
farmland for farm use and minimizes conflicting uses
Homework
