National Water Safety Week 30 September to 4 October
Fairfield City Leisure Centres’ annual Water Safety Week
will run in conjunction with Swim Australia's and
Austswim Water Safety Week. This initiative is focused
on educating people, of all ages, on the necessary
survival skills in and around any aquatic environment.
The Leisure Centres will conduct activities throughout the week including CPR demonstrations, ActiveGator appearances, rescue/survival demonstrations, and free swimming lessons for specific age groups (bookings are essential). The pool inflatable will also be available for all confident swimmers during Safety Week. Children will also have the chance to win fantastic prizes in our colouring in competition. Pick up your entry at reception today.
Active supervision
Ensure you focus your full attention on
your child/children and never leave them
alone in or around water. Leisure Centre
policy states children 9 years of age or
under MUST be supervised by a person
16 years or older at all times.
Children 4 years and under MUST wear
a green “stay with me” armband and
accompanied within arms reach in the
water by a person 16 years and over at
all times.
AQUATOPIA
Another season of Aquatopia is set to start on Saturday, 21 September. This will be the first full season of the 20-metre slides that opened late last season. The giant slide features a 3-Lane Racing Ride (perfect for challenging your friends); a high-speed free-fall slide; and the Rocket Drop Slide - which drops brave riders via a trap door to a fast loop, through a transparent tube that will circle the free-fall slide on its way down.
Cabanas offer social groups of up to 40 the opportunity to stay cool in style at Aquatopia Water Park.
Each cabana comes with bench tables, a small cooler fridge to hold a standard sized cake, a ceiling fan and block out blinds. Hiring a cabana will also give you access to a BBQ and small grassed area to sit back and enjoy.

Tech Talk Counting strokes should be a part of every swimming
workout. Counting strokes is working on Distance
travelled Per Stroke (DPS). The object is to try and travel
maximum distance with minimal strokes. Your goal should
be to increase your speed, and maintain or lower your
stroke count. This is applicable to every stroke, every lap
set yourself a challenge.
Start to regularly count your strokes become more aware
of your DPS. This is especially helpful when sprinting.
During sprints swimmers tend to swim with faster arms, but
shorter strokes. This means you have to work harder to
cover the same distance.
Take the challenge, for the next month regularly count your
strokes, The next time trials you should see a marked
improvement.

Outstanding Swimmer
Congratulations to Steven L from Prairiewood Leisure Centre. Steven has been swimming for approximately nine years. When Steven first started, he wouldn't put his face in the water. Over time Steven has learnt to be water safe as well as learning the different strokes, swimming laps of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke concisely through his lesson and is learning butterfly. Steven competed in a combined schools special swimming carnival and won his 50m freestyle and was placed in backstroke and breast-stroke. His parents are extremely proud of him and so is his swimming instructor.
