Coulrophobia. The fear of clowns. Those professional pranksters known for entertaining children at birthday parties, and crowds of adults at circuses and rodeos, are apparently quite scary for a lot of people. It may seem ridiculous, as ridiculous as the actual clowns’ acts, yet many are deathly frightened by these jokers.

Perhaps its the makeup, it makes them seem so inhuman and strange. Perhaps its their actual tricks, nobody likes having water squirted in their face when they go to smell a flower. Or perhaps its the media’s portrayal of clowns, with Ronald McDonald clogging all our arteries, and movies like Stephen King’s IT.

Personally, I’ve always found clowns to be funny, and never actually had any fear of them. That is, until I heard of the real life Killer Clown, John Wayne Gacy.

John Wayne Gacy, like many serial killers, appeared to be a pretty normal guy. He ran his own construction business, and was quite charitable with the money he made from it. He also offered his construction services free of charge to the Democratic Party.

He was so well liked for his charitable deeds, that he even had the opportunity to meet First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Gacy didn’t stop there, eventually finding his way into joining a club of clowns that would entertain young children at parades and in hospitals. Gacy took on the persona of Pogo the Clown, a costume that he designed himself and even changed the features of so that it would have a sharp mouth painting rather than the usual rounded.
