What a great start to the school year this has been. I would like to take a moment to share some important information with you all. I am sending emails to all of our families through Infinite Campus to keep you all updated on important events and information. If you are not receiving these emails, please check Infinite Campus and make sure that a working email address is attached to your childs summary page. If you would like to make changes or add an email address, please contact us and we will help you get the information in IC. We are also closely monitoring student attendance on a daily basis. If your child is absent, you should be receiving a phone call and an email with a message from me. Please know that we do not want your child here if he/she is truly sick (fever & vomiting), but we do want to make sure that any unnecessary absences are avoided since we are now utilizing a BLOCK schedule and we simply do not want your child missing any instruction. The teachers will also be contacting you to check on your child when he/she is out of school. We are also closely monitoring students with missing assignments and low grades. We have a time in the morning (8:15) before school starts for students to receive remediation and an opportunity to re-take assessments. We call this Instructional Focusand the days for IF are: Monday-Connections//Tuesday-Math// Wednesday- ELA// Thursday-Science//Friday-Social Studies. The school council information is listed below. School Fundraiser

Thank you all for helping us with our first school fundraiser! It looks like we met our goal and the personalized learning focus team and leadership team will be evaluating the technology needs of the school. On September 17, we are going to kick off one more fundraiser. This one is a cookie dough fundraiser that has been timed so that if you choose to purchase cookie dough, it will be delivered right before the Thanksgiving Break. I know I always like to have something easy to throw into the oven to make all of my family happy! All fundraising will go towards adding technology to our building, so thank you again for any and all support that you provide to us!

Sincerely,

Gena Williams Principal

Attendance

Join the Wolfpack Attendance Initiative by reminding your child to be

In School, On Time, Every Day!

Encourage good attendance with these ideas:

Schedule doctor, dentist and orthodontist appointments during breaks whenever possible. If your child must miss class time for an appointment, try to schedule it at the very beginning of the day or at the very end of the day. Alternating regular appointment times will keep students from missing the same classes repeatedly.

Point out there is no substitute for being in class. Your youngster needs to be present to hear teachers explain concepts, to participate in group projects, and to ask questions.

It will be easier for your child to get up on time for school if he has had at least 9 hours of sleep. Set a reasonable bedtime and make sure he puts away electronic devices so he isn’t tempted to stay awake to read messages or play games.

Wolfpack Players Drama Club News

The Wolfpack Players Drama Club has begun preparations for the Literacy Days Recitation and Drama Competition. Each of our students have selected a poem for practice and review for the Recitation contest coming up in October. We look forward to learning how to use gestures and intonation effectively to convey a clear message for an audience.

Because of our practice in improvisation over the past few weeks, members have a reasonable understanding of stage direction and can move around each other for maximum projection and blocking. If the use of these terms sound like a foreign language to you, ask any of the members of the Drama Club for clarification. Young performers love to talk about improving their craft, whether it is on the stage, behind the camera, writing scripts, or general audience etiquette.

We hope to gain schoolwide support in the various activities planned for the 2014-2015 school year.

Woodland Middle School Orchestra – TAKE

NOTE! (September)

It’s hard to believe we’ve already been in school for a month and that students have received their first progress reports! I just wanted to first of all thank you for allowing me the privilege of teaching your children! I also am very grateful for your support and for encouraging your children to practice daily and keep improving.

I also wanted to provide you with some important reminders. The Orchestra Room is available for extra practice from 8:00-8:40 AM every day except for Tuesday. Students are required to practice for 100 minutes outside-of-class each week (homework grade) and are to submit an Orchestra Practice Record indicating their minutes practiced each week. Please be sure you and your child sign-up for my Orchestra Group in Edmodo.

Also, please consider opting to receive reminder text messages and emails form me throughout the year. Students were provided with directions on how to do all of these things earlier last month. Please email me ([email protected]) if you need directions or information. The Orchestra shirts have arrived! If your child (all 6th graders, re-orders, or any new 7th or 8th grade Orchestra students) has not yet paid for their shirt, please send in your payment ASAP!
