Leading the Debate on Future Energy and Sustainability
Abu Dhabi - The meeting place for world leaders
1 1
Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is the ground-breaking global forum that unites thought leaders, policy makers and
investors to address the challenges of renewable energy and sustainable development. With the global population set to reach
nine billion by 2030, ADSW promotes collaborative thinking and development to accelerate the sustainable solutions needed
to support rapid economic and population growth. An Abu Dhabi government initiative, ADSW is the largest gathering on
sustainability in the Middle East and a significant forum in stimulating the international dialogue and action.
With a mandate from countries around the world, IRENA aims to encourage governments to adopt enabling policies for renewable energy investments and provides practical tools and policy advice to accelerate renewable energy deployment with a goal to provide clean, sustainable energy for the world’s growing population.
Key Events
The International Water Summit (IWS) is a unique global platform for promoting water sustainability in arid regions. The UAE provides a strong example of the interconnection of energy and water in water-scarce regions.
The World Future Energy Summit is the world’s foremost event dedicated to renewable energies, energy efficiency and clean technologies.
Hosted by Masdar and held in partnership with Tadweer, EcoWASTE is an exhibition that aims to become the international leading specialised event for sustainable waste management and recycling.

The Festival at Masdar City is a two-day program that engages in a multitude of activities and surprises. Aiming to spread awareness and educate the public about sustainability and clean energy.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize represents the vision of the Late Founding Father and President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who championed environmental stewardship. This annual award celebrates achievements that reflect impact, innovation, long-term vision and leadership in renewable energy and sustainability.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is mandated as the global hub for renewable energy cooperation and
information exchange by 138 Members from 137 States and the European Union. Roughly 33 additional countries are in the ac-
cession process and actively engaged. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as
the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and
financial knowledge on renewable energy.
The Agency promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geo-
thermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and
low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.
The Zayed Future Energy Prize represents the vision of the Late Founding Father and President of the United Arab Emirates,
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, who championed environmental stewardship. On January 19, 2015, the 7th annual Zayed
Future Energy Prize Awards Ceremony will recognise nine winners in five categories, Large Corporation, Small and Medium En-
terprise, Non-Profit Organisation (NPO/NGO) and Global High Schools, with a share of US$ 4 million dollar for their outstanding
achievements in renewable energy and sustainability.

International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Zayed Future Energy Prize
Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today Few forces will have a profound impact on businesses and economies as the global dynamics of energy, natural resources, de-velopment, and environment. The great energy challenge of our time is to meet the demands of a growing world economy. As the world’s population surge to 9 billion by 2030, the struggle to produce 50% more food and energy and 30% more fresh water, whilst reducing greenhouse gas emissions, becomes more intense. No less urgent is the need to bring modern energy services to the 1.3 billion people who still lack access to electricity today. In response to these challenges, world leaders are taking action. Governments around the world are pledging their commit-ments to improve energy efficiency, deliver energy access and drive clean energy deployment. Transforming our energy system demands a new level of collaboration and a synchronized set of actions in the technical, economic, social, and political realms. At the centre of this transformation is the World Future Energy Summit, an annual meeting place of more than 30,000 policy-makers and business leaders from 170 countries - in the pursuit of a secure, safe and reliable source of energy to power world economic growth. Hosted by Masdar and the centrepiece of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, World Future Energy Summit cultivates a much-needed dialogue between critical stakeholders, from Heads of States, Governments, Academia and the Business and Financial communi-ties.

World Future Energy Summit International Water Summit
Water is crucial for all life on earth. The natural resource plays an essential role in our economy and industrial growth, health, food production and environment. Global consumption of water doubles every 20 years, more than twice the rate of population growth. Water is a finite resource and in order for arid regions to keep pace with industrial growth and ensure water security and future water sustainability, the challenges must be addressed. On January 18, 2012, His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, launched the International Water Summit as part of a far reaching sustainability vision aimed at ensuring the prosperity and welfare of mankind – not only in the United Arab Emirates, but across the world. His statement, “water is more important than oil for the UAE” was a bold and clear signal that an economy based on oil is placing water at the top of its agenda. The International Water Summit and Exhibition is a major global platform for promoting water sustainability in arid regions. As a natural extension of the UAE’s commitment to sustainability, International Water Summit is be co-located with the World Future Energy Summit “WFES”, bringing the nexus to life between mankind’s two most vital resources: water and energy.

Hosted by Masdar and held in partnership with Tadweer, EcoWASTE is designed to cover the entire solid waste management ser-
vices and solutions required to address the dramatic increase per capita of waste production in the region and the new methods
of reusing, reducing and recycling whilst maintaining a sustainable environment, in an effort to:
· Help strengthen solid waste management efficiency
· Spread awareness among communities to improve the quality of life enjoyed and expected
· Address regulatory mandates developed with budget conscious, innovative and functional design solutions
· Highlight all the efforts, achievements and strategies of CWM as a lead agency responsible for controlling and
coordinating waste management activities throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi
EcoWASTE is a new international platform bringing together leading local and international technology and service providers,
local and regional buyers, and industry professionals from both the private and public sectors.

Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge (ADSC) The inaugural Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge (ADSC) is a four-day cross-country road competition covering 1,200km of city and highway driving – using only solar generated power. Involving more than 20 university teams from across the globe, the race is the first of its kind to be held in the Middle East. It will culminate in a parade of participating vehicles that will arrive at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) venue as part of the WFES opening ceremony.
While the ADSC seeks to encourage competition among engineering students, it is also aimed at providing a means to convert their knowledge into real world solutions that promote energy efficiency.
It brings together students with diverse backgrounds from six continents and enables them to compete their hand-built solar powered cars in one of the most exciting and progressive countries in the world.
The following concepts are integral to the competition:
· Educational excellence in science, engineering and mathematics;
· Creative integration of technical and scientific expertise across a wide-range of disciplines;
· Hands-on experience to develop and demonstrate technical and creative abilities;
· Understanding of marketing, business and management skills needed to execute large and complex projects;
· Renewable energy technologies (specifically electric drive based projects and photovoltaics);
· Environmental consciousness;
· Safety in all aspects of the development, testing and driving;
· Sportsmanship, friendship and co-operation
