Leading. Human. Kind.

In every room of every house

or facility we visit, we witness

and celebrate precious moments

of hope — another meaningful

day for a patient with his or her

family, shared laughter during a

tough conversation, or a patient

whose mind is clearer than ever

due to great clinical care. These

magical moments are possible because of you. Your

generosity is one of The Elizabeth Hospice’s greatest

fortunes. Your support gives us resources we need to

bring compassionate solutions to complex patient and

family challenges. Your generosity transforms lives.

As the region’s leading and largest nonprofit hospice

and palliative care provider, we have touched the lives

of more than 90,000 individuals and their loved ones

since 1978 — thanks to your support of our profound

mission. This year, and every year, we celebrate you.

Thank you.

Jan Jones, RN, BSN

The Elizabeth Hospice is celebrating YOU.

Welcome to Touching Lives

Dear Friend,

For 36 years, The Elizabeth Hospice has been devoted to

providing high-quality medical, emotional and spiritual

support to those in need, regardless of their gender, age,

ethnicity, religion, disease, insurance status or ability to

pay. Until recently, our service area encompassed only

Northern San Diego County. Now, our programs and

services reach across San Diego and South Riverside Counties. We are here for

you during life’s final stages and through the healing journey afterwards.

The Elizabeth Hospice has committed time, financial resources and people to

develop and expand a specialized pediatric service for infants and children. The

program provides the traditional scope of hospice services, with sensitivity to the

unique needs of families of our young patients, and fulfills our commitment to

care for infants and children living with a serious illness.

As your community hospice, it is our responsibility to provide you with tools

and resources to make informed healthcare decisions for you and your loved one.

This issue includes articles about caregiver support, talking about your wishes at the

end of life, and spirituality. Baby Boomers also discuss finding hope and meaning

when dealing with a life-limiting illness.

Touching Lives magazine introduces you to the benefits of hospice for you

and your family, along with the information you need to make appropriate

decisions about end-of-life care. Call The Elizabeth Hospice today to begin a

conversation. We’ll talk about embracing life. We’ll talk about living more fully

in comfort and in control. We’ll focus on living.

Warm regards,

Jan Jones, RN, BSN, FAAMA

Without You, we could not exist.

In the late 1970’s, few knew the word hospice

or its potential to alleviate suffering. But one

nurse held a vision of what this philosophy

of care could mean to her community.

This nurse, Elizabeth “Betty” Bulen, invited three

of her friends to work with her in establishing

The Elizabeth Hospice (all four women had

“Elizabeth” in their names), devoted to caring

for the terminally ill and their families in 1978.

The Bulen Legacy Society is comprised of

188 caring individuals who have

demonstrated their commitment to the long-term

success of our organization by including

The Elizabeth Hospice in their will or estate.

YOU can help maintain our legacy of care.
