Spotlight Young Professionals Spurred to Action

As part of the Spotlight Program for young professionals we were introduced to the Refuge of Hope, one of only two men’s shelters in Stark County which also provides six meals a week to anyone who needs it.

As we left, I felt compelled to donate enough money to purchase at least one cot for someone who has nothing but the clothes on his back. Kristin Green, a fellow class-mate, and I came up with a donation plan, and formally asked for the support of our peers hoping to put together a $1,000 donation to Refuge of Hope for the purchase of 10 cots. The outpouring of support was amazing. We presented Duane with a check for $1,645 at our last session. In another effort, class members got permis-sion to harvest the remaining produce from the Canton Community Garden and also donated that to the Refuge of Hope for the meal program. We were truly inspired by the work being done at the Refuge of Hope and by the support and compassion of our Spotlight class members. (See page six for class list!)

Award demonstrates Affinity Medical Center commitment to quality care for heart failure patients.

Affinity Medical Center was awarded the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. This recogni-tion signifies that Affinity has reached an exceptional goal of treating heart failure patients according to the guidelines of care recommended by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology.

Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps Affinity’s staff develop and imple-ment acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program pro-vides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice dis-charge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track perfor-mance.

The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart at-tacks.

Following Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure treatment guidelines, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies if needed, including cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and an-ticoagulants while in the hospital. Before discharge, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, including lifestyle modifications and follow-up care. Hospitals must ad-here to these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the achievement awards. “Affinity is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country. The American Heart Asso-ciation’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program helps us to accomplish

this goal,” said Ron Bierman, CEO. “This recognition demonstrates that we are on the right track and we’re very proud of our team.” According to the American Heart Associa-tion, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diag-nosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications and devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.

Affinity Medical Center is committed to partnering with its community, patients, physicians and employees to provide high quality, personalized, compassionate healthcare; contributing to a healthier community by promoting healthful living; and providing educational opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Board Matching SessionFebruary 21 • 4:30-7:30 p.m.Potential board members will be matched with non-profit organizations in a “speed-boarding” session. Agency representatives and Leadership Stark County participants will go through a rotation of ten-minute conversa-tions to assess mutual interests. There are generally around 20 non-profits represented and about 20 participants. Leadership Stark County then uses participant and agency rankings to find the best matches.

If your non-profit agency is looking to recruit new board members, try the Leadership Stark County board matching process. You will get to meet potential members and tell them what your agency does and hear them talk about their aspirations for community service. Please call the Leadership Stark County office for more informa-tion.

If you are a graduate of the Leadership Stark County Signature or Spotlight Young Professionals programs and would like to explore new areas of community involvement, please call us for more information.
