Leadership ReflectionToday we farewelled our Year 12 students as they celebrated their last offical school day. As they preapre for their VCE exams and make plans for the next step in their lives, we prayer that they find their place in the world and remember that they will always be a part of our Catholic College Wodonga community.

Principal’s PulseDear Parents, Families and Carers, I would like to start by thanking Mr. Anthony Loorham for acting in my role whilst I was on the French Immersion trip. Key aspects of attending the immersion was having the opportunity to see French Teachers and students in their school. As in any educational environment the heart of each school community is the relationship between the staff and students. Our sister school, St Michel, has a wonderful environment for students to learn, whilst being quite different to our setting. Fifteen students from Years 10-11 were wonderful ambassadors and I also thank Mrs. Heather Cirovic and Ms. Miranda Salinger for their wonderful support whilst we were in France.

Year 12 last day

Once again we arrive at our Year 12 students’ final day. This article has been written prior to their final day, and it is my hope that their day is one to remember. This cohort of students has been extremely positive in their relationships with their peers and staff throughout their six years at Catholic College. I am optimistic that each of them will achieve the results of which they are truly capable, and find success in whichever field they choose to pursue in their future years.

Richmond Institute of Sports Leadership (RISL)A number of our senior students would be well aware of the new relationship we have embarked on with the Richmond Institute of Sports Leadership. The Institute is an arm of the Richmond Football Club, which is facilitated by Swinburne University. In 2019, students enrolled in the RISL will complete a double Diploma of Sport Development and Leadership & Management. Two days of this course each week will be delivered onsite at Catholic College. We look forward to this being a start to an ongoing relationship to allow some of our students to complete a 13th year of education at Catholic College. Year 7 & 8 Reading ProgramSince returning from France, I have spoken with Miss. Hannah Banks and Mr. Michael Russell regarding the new initiative they have coordinated with our Year 7 & 8 students. We are determined to assist our students improve their reading ability and this new program, which focuses on reading every day, is one measure that we have undertaken to improve out literacy results. It is clear at this early stage that our students are engaging in this program, and I have been pleased to hear from staff that they believe our students are enjoying this approach. A key aspect of our work as educators is to look for new was to engage our students and I believe this is one measure of many, which will see the literacy skills of our students continue to improve.

one last thing...Unfortunately I was unable to attend the VCAL presentations for this year but the feedback I have received has been nothing short of amazing. I congratulate all our senior VCAL students and wish them good luck for their future years. Many thanks to Mrs. Shinead Kilroy and her team for their commitment and passion.

Learning WalksLearning walks are designed to give prospective members of our community a real sense of what a day in the life of a Catholic College student is. They are conducted by either the Principal or a Deputy Principal. Those members of our community who choose to engage in the activity have an opportunity to see how we utilize all areas of our school site. The important part of the conversation is also around our future, and many of the new initiatives and ideas will be discussed in these walks.

The last Learning Walk will be on Thursday 29 November at 1.30pm.

Uniform GuidelinesFrom the start of the 2019 school year all Catholic College Wodonga students are required to wear CEW branded items only.

This also applies to the sports uniform. The wearing of non-CEW branded items will not be permitted.

We respectfully ask that you discuss the wearing of the correct uniform with your child or children so as we can support each other in ensuring all Catholic College Wodonga students comply with the wearing of our College uniform.

SANDURST DIOCESE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLIES EXPERIENCE 2018

Over the last year, Natalie Barnes, Alexia Brown and I have been getting ready for an opportunity that was introduced to us at the beginning of the year to head to the Cebu in the Philippines as our Alternative Schoolies trip and experience the world from a different perspective. There are currently nineteen students from the diocese who will be meeting at the Melbourne Airport on 28 November to take off on a new journey, with semi-new people.

Over the last couple of months, we have been fundraising to raise a goal of $1,000 to raise awareness for the Alternative Schoolies Program and for the people of Cebu. We have currently raised $512 from sales at the school production of Musicopia. We have also organised a casual clothes day that will be taking place on Tuesday 6 November, so please bring along a gold coin donation and help us reach our goal. All funds raised will be used to directly help the people of Cebu, and will buy goods and food to be donated. Any donation can help, even just a dollar. So please bring along a gold coin to donate to the beautiful people of Cebu.

WODONGA BIODIVERSITY FIELD DAY

Just before the holidays, thrity-five enthusiastic students from Years 7 - 10 attended David Bayne Park for the Wodonga Urban Landcare Biodiversity Field Day. Students were able to learn about local birds, wild pollinators and squirrel gliders, as well as the threats to these species in our local area. We got our hands dirty helping to plant native trees along Huon Creek and had a special drawing lesson from Wiradjuri artist David Dunn. David taught us about the many uses of the Silver Wattle by Aboriginal people, including food, medicine and even using the plant to kill fish.

This day would not have been possible without volunteers from Wodonga Urban Landcare Network and Petarus Education Group, and our own teachers supporting the Sustainability Team, Andrew McKenzie-McHarg and Sheryl Phillips.

GET INVOLVED! Citizen Science: The Aussie Backyard Bird Count

This week, conservation group BirdLife Australia is holding the annual survey of birds around the country. Aside from being a great excuse to relax in your backyard for 20 minutes, your data provides important information to scientists about birds in different regions. Over the past five years the survey has even highlighted that Kookaburras are declining in South-East Australia. Check out the website for details, including prizes to be won.

Year 8 medieval day

Medieval Day was on Thursday 20 September in Term 3 and was a fulfilling way to sum up our C&C unit on Medieval Europe and Shogunate Japan. It was also an opportunity to display our knowledge to the Year Seven students so that they could have an insight into what we explored last term. With my friends, we dressed up as Japanese warrior women and spent the day doing many fun activities. I thoroughly enjoyed Medieval Day and will still remember it in years to come.

Arts week

Last week we celebrated the “Arts” with our annual Arts week. It was a huge success, with a range of creative and inspirational work from Years 7 to 12, across all Arts subjects such as VCD, Media, Ceramics, Photography and many more. During the exhibition opening, we enjoyed performances by our drama students. Guests were able to view the amazing artwork while listening to live music from our talented musicians. The Hospitality team provided an array of delicious food and guests were able to watch the Year 12 films in our designated Media room. Many students received awards as recognition for their hard work and dedication. We were also excited to have a former student, Kacey Berry, in attendance as our guest speaker. All of the Arts team would like to thank everyone who turned up and supported the students.

Arts week ACTIVITIES

A number of students signed up for an activity on Wednesday of Arts week. We were blown away by their enthusiasm and ability to create such detailed and creative collages in only one lesson. All of the works are now proudly on display in the Arts centre and we hope those students who participated will join us in the future for more fun Art activities!

Sports Newsstate athletics

On Monday 22 October eight students travelled down to Melbourne to represent CCW at the School Sport Victoria Athletics Championships at Lakeside Athletics Track, Albert Park. It was sunny day reaching 29 degrees with a large tail wind down the home straight.

The team consisted of a number of individual athletes, as well as our U14 Boys Relay Team.

The College is extremely proud of the efforts of these students including Ben Hicks 18-20 years: 2nd place Shot Putt, Hamish McInnes 18-20 years: 3rd Long Jump and Logan .....15 boys: 2nd place Discus & Shot Putt.

Thank you to the staff who travelled down to Melbourne on the bus to support these kids. It was an early start and a very late finish.

Congratulations to the team, very well done!

Passed: Junior ShoDan – black beltGold: Shotokan Karate Australian National Champion – Kumite (sparing), 14-15 age division, boysSelected: to the Australian National Shotokan Karate World Championship Squad 2019, Czech RepublicHolds: VIC, NSW and National Championship 2018 titles in Kumite (sparing), 12-15 age division, boysThe Shotokan Karate International Australia holds a seminar, grading and competition each year. This year Jarod Stratton attended the Nationals at Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, QLD. Jarod has been practising Shotokan karate for the last five years and this year he was nominated to grade to a junior black belt (ShoDan). For the past two months Jarod worked extremely hard to achieve the goal of becoming a ShoDan. He has travelled to Melbourne each Tuesday after school to attend classes to prepare for this major milestone. He has been privately coached by Shuhari Shotokan Karate in Wodonga twice a week, as well as practising at home.

The grading took place in front of two Japanese Shotokan karate Senseis and witnessed by all black belt holders, behind closed doors. Jarod has successfully passed his black belt grading, with a comment that his grade was a solid pass and a standout above other first black belt nominees.

The following day Jarod competed in two events at the National Shotokan Karate Championships, Kata (form) – 12-15 age division junior boys and Kumite (sparing) – 14-15 age division boys.

Jarod won gold in Kumite becoming the National 2018 Champion, which followed his successful state championships in NSW and Vic, taking both state titles.

To top of a very successful National event, Jarod has been selected to represent Australia at the 2019 Shotokan Karate World Championships to be held in the Czech Republic.
