• The rates of childhood obesity have tripled over the last thirty years (Foster et al., 2012).• Three million children in the United States
will become obese over the next 2 years (Saviñon et al., 2012).• Increased recognition and diagnosis will lead
to improved interventions and outcomes for childhood obesity (Saviñon et al., 2012). • The nurse is in a prime position to prevent,
educate, assess, and advocate for the decrease in childhood obesity through community-based treatment programs (Foster et al., 2012; Gutin et al., 2008; Saviñon et al., 2012).
Background Information
The purpose of this literature review is to identify best practices for preventing and treating childhood obesity.

Nurses should support and develop a scalable, community-based and affordable treatment program with a focus on assessment, education, and prevention.
• Use Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation Change Theory, Kotter’s Change Model, and MyPlate.gov to:
• Assess behavioral risk early• Provide interdisciplinary support through accurate EHR and early detection
and screening• Implement physical activity programs, healthy meal options in schools, and
small group education for staff, community members, parents and children• Promote healthy lifestyle through community-based, affordable, treatment
