MILITARY TIME Because being a Marine is often a 24 houraday way of life, military time is expressed using 24 hours, in groups of four digits ranging from 0001 (one minute after midnight) to 2400 (midnight). The first two numbers represent the hours after midnight, and the last two numbers the minutes of each hour.

For example: Noon is 1200, and is pronounced twelvehundred. 1:37 p.m. is 1337, pronounced thirteen thirtyseven; and 10:15 p.m. is 2215, or twentytwo fifteen.

Military time has no colon to separate hours and minutes. Hours are numbered 1 through 24 instead of using a.m. & p.m.. Military time has no designation “o‟clock.” A zero proceeds the hours 1 through 9.

0100….zero one hundred 1:00 a.m.

0200….zero two hundred 2:00 a.m.

0300….zero three hundred 3:00 a.m.

LEADERSHIP CITIZENSHIP

1.) Hand salutes are rendered with pride in the MCJROTC program. To execute the hand salute, the right hand is raised smartly until the tip of the forefinger touches the lower part of the headgear, with the thumb and fingers extended and joined, the palm turned slightly inward, the upper arm parallel to the deck, the elbow slightly in front of the body, the forearm inclined at a 45 degree angle, and the hand and wrist in a straight line. To complete the salute, the arm is dropped to its original position in one sharp, clean motion. 2.) Salutes are rendered when the junior is covered and in uniform when meeting a senior officer in uniform (or in civilian clothing, if the junior in uniform recognizes the senior officer) who is riding or walking, six paces away. Salutes are held by the person initiating the salute until the salute is acknowledged by the senior officer. The salute has to be given only once if the senior remains in the area, but if conversation takes place, the salute must be given when either you or the senior officer leaves. 3.) If you are passing an officer going in the same direction, as you come to his side, salute and say, “By your lead, sir.” He will return your salute and say, “Carry on,” or “Granted.” You may now cut the salute and move ahead. 4.) Salutes are given to highranking civilian officials (such as the President of the United States or the Secretary of the Navy). Officers inside a vehicle are saluted, and vehicles belonging to an officer are identified by marks such as blue Department of Defense stickers or colonel or general’s stickers/standards. Salutes are also given when personal honors are being rendered. The National Colors are greeted with a salute. When the National Anthem or To the Colors is being played, a salute is held throughout the entire song, facing the flag, or the music if no flag is present. Finally, salutes are rendered when boarding naval vessels in the following manner: when you reach the top of the gangplank, face aft (to the rear of the ship) and salute the national ensign. After completion, salute the officer of the deck, and request permission to come aboard. When leaving the ship, salute the officer of the deck and request permission to leave the ship, then after completion salute the national ensign. The Principal of Golder College Prep will be saluted in the same manner as you would the SMI, MI and the officers in the MCJROTC program. 5.) Salutes are NOT rendered if: you are engaged in work or play unless spoken to directly; when uncovered (normally covered only outdoors, but if under arms you are covered indoors, so salutes are rendered); when in formation (except at the command Present, ARMS); when moving at double time (you must slow down to a walk to salute); when carrying articles in both hands (you must still give the verbal greeting of the day to the senior officer); in public places where saluting would be inappropriate (theaters, restaurants, etc.) APPENDIX C

Mission Summary The United States Marine Corps is trained, organized, and equipped for offensive amphibious operations and as a "force in readiness. Birthday 10 November 1775 Birthplace Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Motto "Semper Fidelis," which is a Latin term meaning "Always Faithful," adopted around 1883. Emblem Adopted from the British Royal Marines and modified by BGEN Jacob Zeilin in 1868 to depict the Marine as American and maritime. The emblem consists of the eagle clenching in its mouth the Marine Corps motto, the globe (Western Hemisphere), and the anchor. The eagle represents the United States, the globe represents worldwide service, and the anchor represents sea traditions (ties to the United States Navy). The Marines' Hymn Official song of the Marine Corps, circa 18481850. All Marines, former or active duty, stand at attention when this song is played, whether in uniform or in civilian attire. All MCJROTC cadets stand at attention as well. Scarlet Trouser Stripe ("Blood Stripe") Worn by officers and NCO’s today in the Corps on dress blue trousers. It is said that the right to wear the blood stripes was passed to the Corps during the Mexican War after the battle of Chapultepec, in honor of Marine Officer’s and NCO’s killed or wounded during the action. Conferred upon First Lieutenant Presley O' Bannon and the Mediterranean Squadron by the Pasha of Tripoli during the Barbary Wars, 18011807. The Mamaluke sword is the oldest single weapon still in use in the United States Armed Forces. "The President's Own" The Marine Corps Band "The Commandant's Own" The Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps "Leathernecks" Expression referring to Marines, resulting from the stock leather neckpiece which was part of the Marine Corps uniform 17751875 in order to keep the head erect and neck straight. "Devil Dogs" Translation of the German name "Teufelhunden," which were fierce fighting dogs of legendary fame. The Germans gave this name to the Marines during the fighting of Belleau Wood in 1918 during the World War 1, in reference to Marines' persistent and courageous fighting ability. The Star Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,

16

Page 18: LEADERSHIP CITIZENSHIPspeermcjrotc.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/ITWCADETHANDBOO… · CHAIN OF COMMAND/Bn Leadership – 2015-2016 ... CG Commanding General XO Executive Officer

LEADERSHIP CITIZENSHIP

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

O say, does that starspangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,

As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,

In full glory reflected now shines on the stream: 'Tis the starspangled banner! O long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a country should leave us no more?

Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the starspangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved homes and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heavenrescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."

And the starspangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

APPENDIX F

Holding the flag waist high, fold the lower striped section of the flag over the blue field. The folded edge (the edge nearest the reader) is then folded over to meet the open edge. Bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to the open edge starts a triangular fold. The outer point is then turned inward parallel with the open edge to form a second triangle. The triangular folding is continued until the entire length of the flag is folded in this manner. When the flag is completely folded, only the blue field should be visible and it should be folded in the triangular shape of a cocked hat.
