Leader SK Nagel Family Cemetery, Leader, Saskatchewan. This small family plot in the northwest comer of NW 10-22-27-W3 has all but vanished, some unkind soul has bulldozed all the grave markers onto one pile about fifteen feet square. A nearby resident stated that there were about five markers in this plot but we could only find two as at June 16, 1997. This piece of land was homesteaded by Ludwig Nagel and is currently owned by Norman Nagel (probably a grandson to Ludwig). A small mound of dirt covered with weeds marks the spot about fifty yards south of the road and about two hundred yards east of the north/south road. I expect this site to vanish within the next generation. During the summer of 1999, Paul Nagel from Leader, Saskatchewan, restored this small plot to nearly its original state. Funding by the R.M. of Happy Land enabled the placing of the grave markers, planting of grass and installation of a stone marker with a plaque naming all those interred here. The following taken from the two grave markers found on the weed infested mound: Nagel nee Bark Sophia 31 years, died November 01, 1912, wife of Ludwig Nagel. Ludwig was the homesteader of this property. Schelske nee Kieson Karolina died at 73 years, April 12, 1912, wife of Wilhelm Schelske. As at May 01, 1999, Paul Nagel along with help from the municipality of Happy Land have restored this location, Paul dug the three grave markers out of the dirt pile and they have been placed as near as possible to the graves. Following known as buried here: Lukowitoch August born 1860 died 1913. There is a marker for this grave. Nagel child died November 01,1912, of Ludwig Nagel and Sophia Bark. Nagel Karl infant male died 1912 of August Nagel and Christina Berndt. Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery, Leader, Saskatchewan. The Seventh Day Adventist Church was organized September 11, 1915, at that time it was known as the Prussia Church and remained so until 1918. St. John's Lutheran Church Leader, Saskatchewan.

The congregation of St. Johns was organized in 1910. The cemetery was dedicated November 14, 1910, by Reverend William C. Hitzemann of Winnipeg, Manitoba, he often made missionary trips under Reverend C.F. Walther, the Corresponding Missions Secretary of the Minnesota District. The first protocol of the congregation is signed by Ernest Wenzel and Ernest Baerwald. A meeting held June 05, 1911, was attended by twelve men, Rudolph Meier, Arnold Wenzel, Ernest Wenzel, Heinrich Wenzel, Rudolph Wenzel, Kornelius Zilke, Wilhelm Martin, Rudolph Hohn, Fredrick Wenzel, Ernest Baerwald, Johann Wenzel and Daniel Ratke. This group of pioneer settlers decided to build St. John's Lutheran Church, the congregation was incorporated in 1918, and joined the Missouri Synod in 1921. The small 13 by 24 foot church was built in 1911 with lumber hauled from Maple Creek and the Smith Ranch. A loan of $500.00 from Rudolph Wenzel allowed the congregation to pay for the church in 1912. The building was enlarged in 1916 and a parsonage was also constructed that year. This small congregation decided to build a parochial school, in 1924, with the help of a $1800.00 loan from the Church Extension Fund this was accomplished. In 1942, the parochial school was changed to a separate school and remained so until 1962. The parsonage, located on the east side of the road across from the church, was moved to Leader, Saskatchewan, in 1947, the congregation then maintained the eight acres of church and cemetery property on the west side of the road. Ground breaking services for a new church in Leader were held May 17, 1959, the corner stone laid September 13, 1959, and the new building was dedicated November 15, 1959, with the service being conducted from the old church by Reverend G. Knoernschild. Pastors who served St. John's were: 1911 to 1915 Paul A. Schmidke, 1915 to 1919 Otto H. Linnemeier, 1919 to 1933 John H. Lucht, 1934 to 1938 Reinhold H. Threiner, 1938 to 1940 Jacob R. Esslinger, 1940 to 1949 Frederick A. Schole, 1949 to 1952 Edgar M. Preis, 1953 to 1956 Louis C. Theiss, and 1958 to 1969 Gerhardt E. Knoernschild. This cemetery is located ten miles south of Leader, Saskatchewan, on the west side of highway #21, on SE 04-21-26-W3. The property is well maintained, the old church building has been replaced with a replica of St. John's Lutheran Church including pews and pulpit. One can browse through several original church books, many photos of the congregation, the cemetery records and other papers inside the small building. Please sign the register while visiting. The cemetery is still active as at June 02, 1997.

The Apostolic Church of Leader, Saskatchewan

There had been meetings of a small Pentecostal group as early as 1916, but this group was later abandoned. In August 1934, a new group headed by Hilda and Elsie Schindel rented an abandoned pool room, hired Reverend Lowenberg, and started holding regular services. Later, the congregation moved to the former Keller Photo Studio. The meeting of this group caused quite a stir in the community, they were on occasion, subjected to mockery and egg throwing. Pastors who served after Reverend Lowenberg were: Carl Weinheimer 1935 to October 1939, Otto Bonesky 1939 to 1942, Percy Kylo 1942 to 1945, A.G. McPail 1945 to 1950, Russell Richardson 1951, Lawson Barbour 1951 to 1955, Pastor Beeston 1955 to 1957, Ray Barnett 1957 to 1958, Bill Lindberg spring 1958 to June 1964, Ben Kirkpatrick 1964 to 1967, Lionel Bathe 1967 to 1969, Bill Gammer 1969 to 1971, Clint Cornelius until 1973, Ron Hagerty October 1973 to August 1978, and Dennis Petersen started serving in 1978, he was the last resident pastor.

    Alliance Church Leader, Saskatchewan.

Early records for this congregation have been lost, but pioneers in the area recall that the congregation was formed in 1911. Meetings were first held in homes, by 1913 the congregation adopted the name Zion Congregational Church. The church, built on Second Avenue was dedicated by Reverend William, because ofthe large number attending, the service was conducted from the Lutheran church across the street. The first resident pastor, Henry Triesse was succeeded by Richard Otto. The rapid growth of the congregation forced them to build a new church in 1917, it was dedicated by Reverend G.F. Ricker. Some of the founding families included: Albrecht, Bock, Eirich, Frie, Gies, Gill, Herman, Janot, Klein, Litzenberger, Nagel, Neumiller, Nitschke, Rader, Ritz, Salmeir, Schissler, Schmick, Seifred, Sept, Serr, Trautwein, Wiese, Yackel and Zahl. Pastors who served include: Julius Haum 1919 to 1920, Gross 1920 to 1921, Strobel 1921 to 1925, Martens 1925 to 1929, from 1930 to 1953 the church was served by itinerant pastors from Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Medicine Hat and Calgary, Alberta. Reverend Ewald Degen served from 1953 to 1967, Harvey Boldt 1967 to 1969, Irwin Driedger 1969 to 1970, David Anderson 1972 to 1974, Lome Cornelson 1974 to 1977 and Ken Siemens starting in 1977. During the latter part of the 1920's most Congregational churches in Canada merged with the Presbyterians and Methodists to form the United Church. At this time this congregation adopted the name "German United Church" but did not become an official part of the United Church.

    Emmanuel Evangelical Church Leader, Saskatchewan.

Special Evangelistic services were first held in 1944, the church became an official charge of the Northwest Canada Conference held at Didsbury, Alberta, in 1944. Reverend E.W. Riegel, living at Mendham, Saskatchewan, was the first pastor to serve the Leader church. The congregation purchased a lot in Leader on March 08, 1946, and moved the parsonage from Mendham. This building had at one time been a church at Estuary, Saskatchewan, was moved to Mendham,

  • converted into a parsonage and would now become a church again. Dedication services conducted by District Superintendent Dr. W.W. Kruger were held October 27, 1947. In 1967, the building was moved onto a new basement, enlarged to include Sunday School class rooms and modem utilities were installed. Pastors who served were: E.W. Riegel 1944 to 1947, E.H. Hartfield 1947 to 1949, G.S. Rattai 1949 to 1950, A.E. Stickel 1950 to 1955, J.A. Kaiser 1955 to 1959, R.F. Deimert 1959 to 1964, C.W. Rahn 1964 to 1967, G.W. Brandt 1967 to 1970, D. German Baptist Church Leader, Saskatchewan.

The congregation was founded May 20, 1909, by eight charter members. Reverend G. Bienert, a traveling evangelist was responsible for organizing this group. The congregation first met for services near Estuary, Saskatchewan, in a church known as "Hoffnungstahl" or "Valley of Hope." They purchased a home from one of the pioneers living south of Estuary and used it until 1916 when this building was moved into Leader. Other members of this congregation built their own churches: Liebenthal Baptist south of Burstall, Saskatchewan, German Town Baptist at Hilda, Alberta, and Gnadenfeld Baptist at Sandy Point, Alberta. The Leader congregation changed its name from Hoffnungstahl to Leader Baptist church in 1916. In 1925 the Leader Baptist Church hosted the Central Saskatchewan/Alberta Association of Baptist Churches. Reverend L. Christensen was resident pastor, Carl Michta was church clerk and L. Schmunk was an additional delegate at the sessions. The German Baptist Church of Leader merged with the Glidden Baptist Church in 1952.
