SHINING MOMENTS AND

SHOOTING STARS

LEAD VIRGINIA Class of 2013

November 22, 2013

Page 2: LEAD VIRGINIA Graduate Presentation

My most important learning has been my deepened sense of duty to

serve the entire Commonwealth. I leave LEAD VIRGINIA matching understanding with knowing the

human experience and story.

I intend to play a role strengthening relationships across regions and

looking for opportunities to work toward diverse and inclusive

communities where all voices are at the table.

I’ve learned that I can clog with the best of them and that pizza at midnight really is a good idea!!

I discovered that our class was chock full of fascinating leaders who already make the state a better place.

I plan to think and act more broadly like a Virginian; become an active LEAD VA alumnus; and invest in a Virginia winery!

When you have lived as long as I have, you welcome

personal discoveries and confirming opportunities.

The most confirming is that I develop an appreciation

for what I learn when I am able to experience subject matter first hand and by

being engaged and involved.

LEAD VIRGINIA has expanded my world … I will be forever grateful.

I continue to "spread the word" with others as to how invigorating and fascinating a place Virginia is and how its tremendously diverse regions are moving to advance themselves, each in its own way and each playing on its own strengths and tradition.

“With an alumni base of over 400, LEAD VIRGINIA has proven that it is the only repository that leaders, scattered across the Commonwealth, can trust to provide an in-depth of understanding of issues that transcend any one experience, profession, or region.

The Honorable Whitt Clement

“Watch the way other leaders walk without taking a step,

Listen to what other leaders say without response,

Read what other leaders have written without correcting,

Capture other leaders in action without judgment,

With the hopes of becoming a better leader.”

DARIEN C. GRANT, I

When I started this program, I sometimes thought I didn’t have a high enough rank in life to do something to help make positive changes. But now I see things differently.

This class is full of people who make me happy and who I know I can call on. These special people are not just passing through … they are here to forever remain a part of my life.

I was reminded that the Virginia is filled with extraordinary shooting stars who

create abundant shining moments for

others! Together ANYTHING is

possible.

Always aim high. When you set your sights, aim for the moon. Even if

you miss your mark, you will find yourself among

the stars.
