Challenges Ahead

• Will provide greater detail in legislative update• State fiscal challenges are greatest in a

generation• AMP – What’s next?– Partnership with DEED

Professional Learning PlatformA technology-based, customized-for-Alaska, professional learning platform to support

educators across the state

• The platform will include a video library, discussion group forums, and professional learning resources.

• A video library of effective teaching practices, including videos featuring Alaskan teachers, will be searchable by content area, grade level specific instructional strategy, Alaskan Academic Standard, or teacher content standard.

• Private and public discussion groups and resource sharing for teachers, administrators, mentors, and coaches would enable educators to share and reflect on their practice.

• Principals across Alaska would have the option to engage together to share building-level professional development structures and practices.

• District leaders would have a go-to Alaska-specific platform of professional learning resources to use as they continue to implement the new ELA and Math Standards and conduct district-specific professional development easily customizable to individual teachers subject area and grade level or topical area

Educational Leadership

Feature information on current statewide issues (i.e. AMP or rural school resources)

Create and access private and public online PLCs

Create and share resources among groups

Professional Development

Be able to personalize national and Alaska resources within online courses to focus on grade/topic/subject

ASA Unity

At the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Franklin said it best:

“We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

There is no room for urban/rural, large/small, interior/southeast divisions. Our core is at risk.

Unity

• Agreement, harmony, accord – synonyms• “singleness among individuals”• “something whole”• “Combination into one”

• We can be victims of change or advocates for change– How do we harness the forces of change?

• Change is inevitable in this fiscal climate• Our greatest opportunity is to identify what

needs to change in our systems and align it with the fiscal changes that are coming

Unfunded/Unnecessary Mandates

• YOU are having an impact – seeing movement on:– 70/30– Retire/Rehire

• Talk of cuts of $500-700M • Can’t get to cuts of that size without heavily

cutting education and health care• No real discussion of revenue• That isn’t the Alaska most Alaskans believe in

– the Alaska that makes sure that every child has a chance.

Communications

• We have to find the energy and the ability to communicate with unity across the state

• With legislators, stakeholders, business people, our community members

• The plain fact that we steward every dollar we are given to put them to work for student learning.

Student Art/Technology Contest & Legislative Reception

Each district will be invited to choose a winning student art/technology piece to be on display at the reception.Our opportunity to strengthen relationships with legislators Guidelines and contest details coming soon….
