Colori e pitture in antichi manoscritti2. - Teofilo Monaco (1) Diversarum artium schaedulaL.

Colours and Paints in Ancient Manuscripts2. - Teofilo Monaco (1) Diversarum Artium SchaedulaThe manuscript by the monk Teofilo, written between XI and XII centuries, was edited in Paris in 1924 by the brothers Emile-Paul Publishers. This study is based on this edition. An important essayist who lived later than the monk, called Jehan Le Begue, in the preface of his Tabula de vocabulis synonimis et equivocis colorum said the following words about the work by Teofilo and his books: ... liber Theophili admirabilis et doctissimi magistri de omni scientia pictura artis. (2) Teofilos work consists of three books: A Treatise on Painting; About the nature of glass; About the art of treating metals. As far as the book dealt with in this paper is concerned, i.e. the first one, it could be said that it represents one of the most important pil lars of the bridge linking the X Papyrus from Leiden (3) to the Libro dellArte by Cennini and Vasaris work of art, who, neverthe less, wrote using a completely different style, refinement and diffe rent knowledge. There is also evidence of the technological state of the art at the time of Teofilo compared with the manuscript from Leiden and with the letter by Ostan (4). Teofilos knowledge comes from Greek-Byzantine roots and ignores completely the Roman knowledge about the paint manufacture and application. The Monks work starts with a sermon addressed to the painters: The different Art processes are learnt step by step. You painter, first of all, should know how to create colours, how to use them accurately and to mix them in the best way. Practise this work with the highest precision. The pious monk still advises: The human work, acquiring these abilities (the skilfulness in any kind of art or talent), leading them to profit and pleasure, through various actions, was passed on over the time till the days foreseen by the Christian religion... Those who shall have learnt them, should not boast, since it is not at all a conquest, but a present. This is the mystical message that Teofilo gives in his work: the knowledge as a present from God, and not a human conquest. A treatise on paint The first fifteen chapters concern only the painters, not the technolo 1 2 3 4

gists, since Teofilo focuses in this first part of his work on teaching how to compose colours, to realize the various parts of the human body, the drape ries and everything concerning the art of painting a picture, especially the icons or the decorations of the miniated codices where each initial letter is an extraordinary work of art as well as the arabesques decorating the paper edges. Nevertheless, it is possible to find in some of these chap ters, subjects which could be intere sting to the people living in our cen tury to understand the meaning of some colour and pigment words which will be found later in this paper.

Chapter 3 - About the Posch/first type; when you have created the skin colour (ceruse plus red lead plus cinnabar) to colour the faces and the bare bodies, mix some dark green colour with red, obtained from the ochre combustion (5), add some cinnabar and make the posch, to draw the eyebrows, the eyes, the nostrils, the mouth etc. Chapter 6 - About the Veneda to be used for the eyes. Mix some black colour with a small amount of white colour; this colour is called veneda. Use it to paint the eyes pupils... etc. Chapter 7 - About the Posch second species: take some of the above said posch and add more dark green colour to obtain the shadow of the previous colour. Chapter 13 - About the Esedra and the other colour for the face: mix the red colour with a small amount of black; this colour is called esedra: draw short strokes around the eye pupils and in the middle of the mouth and very finely between the mouth and the chin ... etc. Chapter 14 - Mixtures of various colours for the draperies of the images painted on the parchment: mix some menesch (6) with some folium (7).5 6

The yellow ochre is a hydrated iron oxide; when dehidrated by roasting it tends to become red. Menesch: in the Synonym tables written by Jehan Le Begue it is written: Aliqui dicunt quod est color rubens ut synopis, set (sed) magis pallidus, et magis clarus quam synopsis; alii ipsum vocant succum, et indici color est; aliter dicit esse succum sambuci, qui viridis est (someone says that it is a red colour like the sinopite, but paler and clearer than the sinopite; others call it juice, that is the indigo colour; and others say that it is the elder juice, green. Merryfield suggests a derivation from the Indian word Mnitish which means madder, so red, again. The word folium has been interpreted differently, mentioning the dyeing product as the extract of a plant called morella. However, by this name various plants are called; the most widespread one is the Crozophora tinctoria from whose seeds the litmus is extracted (Merryfield). Furthermore, Teofilo says: Folia sunt tria genera, unum rubeum, aliud purpureum, tertium saphireum (there are three kinds of folium, one is red, another one is purple and the third one is light blue). This lit mus should not be taken for the archil. Its presence was ascertained in the Evangelarium of Sinope of VI cent. And in the Evangelarium, MS 1126 in the National Library of Paris (XI cent.). According to Le Begue (see above): Folium est pro tingenda lanas, et est color rubeus, et quidam alter purpureus, et alter saphireus.....In fact, the colour changes according to the pH, like any marker.PITTURE E VERNICI - EUROPEAN COATINGS 6/2005

Nowadays, the method is defined as the one of the false fresco. Succus: again in the Table by Le Begue it is written: succus est color, trahens ad indicum; alii dicunt esse rubeum minus clarum quam minium et magis clarum quam synopis, aliter vocatur menesch, quod aliter dici tur ipse menesch esse succum sambuci color. In other words it creates a tone-scale. risce. Poi12

hands is put in the cold water until it becomes hard. It is ground on a massive wood table using another piece of wood, until it is fragmented into tiny pieces. At this stage, it is necessary to put it again in the mortar and grind it accurately using the pestle after adding some water mixed with the quicklime till it becomes as thick as the husk. When these assemblied tables by this glue are dry, they adhere so strongly that they cannot be disjoined any longer neither because of the moisture, nor of the heat. Afterwards they should be levelled by an adequate iron tool. This bent and sharp iron tool ... (omissis). Chapter 18 - About the skin glue and the deer horns (12): after drying them carefully, make more glue in this way. Take some of these leather cuttings and cut it into small pieces, equally dried. The cutting of other parchments (sheep skins being scraped from the flesh) are as good as the previous ones. Take the deer horns and turn them into powder on an anvil by a forging hammer, otherwise take some horn filing. Put them in a new pot and fill it with water to a half, cook it till it decreases to one/third, but without making it boil. You will check it in this way: Dip your fingers in the water; when they are cooled and they get sticky, the glue will be ready. In the following chapter the author teaches how to prepare what in the iconographic techniques is called the leukos (in Greek language, white) or better to say, in the Byzantine lan guage levkas, a base coat which performs an important task in the painting cycle because it is the element linking the table to the following colour layers. Here, however, it seems that the author proposes it for rather different purposes. Chapter 19 - Gypsum bleaching on leather and on wood: take some cooked gypsum (anhydrous calcium sulphate) or the lime and the natural gyspsum (i.e. decahydrated) used to bleach the skins; grind it carefully on a stone using the water and put it in a terracotta pot, pour some leather glue and place it on some charcoals till it becomes liquid so as to be spread on the leather by a thin layer with a brush. When it is dry you will apply a second thicker coat and a third one, if requested. When it is completely dry, sand it using an iron tool; then take that grass which is called cleavers (13) growing with the shape of a gnarled rush, which should be picked up in summer and dried in the sun; rub the bleached object till it becomes glossy. If you have not the leather to cover the panels, lay a new, average strength (thickness) (14) linen or canopy canvas, using the same glue. Chapter 20 - About the way of painting the doors with the red colour and about the linseed oil: if you want to paint some doors with the red colour or to change their colour, use some linseed oil, which will be prepared in this way: Take some linseeds which will be dried in a frying pan on the fire without water. questi metodi si conservano per lo meno fino al 500, come testimonia lo scritto delmedico sanese Pietro Andrea Matteoli al capitolo Della Xilocolla o della Colla di carniccio (1543).

These methods were adopted at least till 1500, as it is witnessed by the written work by the Saniese phisician Andrea Matteoli in the chapter titled: Della xili colla o della Colla del carniccio (1543). They may have been used for a longer time, if one just thinks of the great success Matteoli enjoyed throughout many cen turies. On the other hand, our carpenters glue, otherwise called garavella or car penter one (strictly related to Teofilo), is made more or less in the same way. s Galium aparine belonging to the madder family. Remember that Teofilo wrote his works in a century strictly close to the Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (843), where the use of icons was declared officially legitimate, after the death of the fierce Iconoclastic Emperor Teofilo (bearing the same name as the monk, dead in 842). The technique described hereafter is exactly the one used by the iconographers to prepare the wood tables of the icons. After glueing the canvas on the table with the fish, the shred of flesh or bone glue, the fol lowing step consisted in preparing the levkas (from the greek leukos, white) otherwise called a white background, pouring in the warm glue the alabaster or gypsum powder. Once the levkas had been applied, the next step was the wet san ding and washing using a sponge (L. Colombo, I colori delle Icone, part III, P&V No. 16, 1998 and Sendler, Licona, immagine dellinvisibile, pp 177-180).PITTURE E VERNICI - EUROPEAN COATINGS 6/2005

It was decided then to have some wet sheepskin leathers at ones own disposal to put out the flames in case of fire. Of this measure several tokens are found till XVIII cent. As it can be seen, the varnish produced is a flatting product or a paint binder. Of course none or very few people use the gum arabic instead of the copal gum to be subjected to heat. However, everything considered, the recipe is not so different from the prepara tions of a time which is still modern. In the preface to the Technology of Paints publi shed by OCCA in London, (1956), translated and reviewed by Dr Balbi (p. 14) it is said: the linseed oil, which is heated in a separate heater, is added by small portions to the gum subjected to the heat, cooking the mixture after each addition, until the oil has been completely assimilated. When the whole amount of oil has been added, the mixture cooking process goes on at 320 until the required viscosity has been reached. Afterwards, the usual Pb and Mn driers are added and the dilution process starts. The OCCA edition is dated 1957, a period which could be considered as the classic age of our industry, which then became obsolete because of the new technical innovations.11

Chapter 22 - About the horse saddles and about the eight-bearer litters ... (omissis). Chapter 23 - About the golden leaf: here Teofilo teaches how to prepare the very thin golden leaves for paint application and for the sculpture. Chapter 24 - About the way of laying gold and silver: in order to lay gold and silver, take an egg white, which was previously whipped without water; brush the surface which will be coated with gold. Licking the point of this brush, touch a corner of the cutting (to be applied): raising it very quickly you shall pose it on the previously prepared surface and you shall lay it using a dry brush. At this stage, it is necessary to take measure against the air; you should hold your breath because if you blow you will lose the leaf and youll hardly find it again (17). Once the first leaf has been laid as you like, you will be able to overlap the second and the third ones, so as to obtain the highest gloss rate after burnishing using a stone or a tooth. If you like, in the same way, you will be able to lay the golden leaf on a ceiling, on a wall or cover a tin leaf. Chapter 25 - About the tin leaf: accurately thin the purest tin on an anvil by a given sized and thick hammer. When they start thinning a little, clean one side using a wool cloth and finely powdered charcoal. Chapter 26 - How to colour the tin leaves so as they seem made of gold: ... (omissis). Chapter 27 - The way of grinding the colours using oil and gum: every type of colour can be ground with the same quality of the oil and lay them on a piece of wood; however this is true only for the objects which can be dried in the sun, since after applying a colour coat, you cannot overlap another one if the first one is not dry; which is too long lasting and boring as for the icons and other paints. If you want to speed up the operation, take the gum leaking from the cherry or from the plum tree (18); after breaking it into small particles, put it in a clay pot, pour a lot of water in it, then expose it to the sunlight, or in winter, you shall place it on the lightly fired charcoals, until the gum is liquefied (it has become soluble). Carefully mix by a round wood stirrer, filter using a flax cloth and grind the pigments, then start painting. Any colour can be ground and applied with this gum, except for the vermillion, the ceruse and the crimson which should be ground and brushed with the egg white. The Green of Spain (19) must not be blended with the succus, but only with the gum. If you like, you can mix it with another one (colour). The author gives a few suggestions on how to go further with the application of paints. The protocol is highly simplified, but its easy to recognise the methods which would be optimized during the golden age of the iconography.17

18 19

Truly, the measures against the draughts were taken a long time earlier: at the beginning of the operation the painter-gilder withdrew in a little room with well closed windows and door. Furthermore, to avoid the smallest grain of powder coming inside, the old masters wetted the working table. Sendler, in the above mentioned work, points out two techniques which were used by the iconographers: oil gilding on a bolus earth background. Sendler reported the application of a base-glue which is called misture o mistione or missione (mixture) based on different compositions, but essen tially on various resin solutions, (mastics, sandrac, g.gutta, trementine) in terpene solvents or oil-resin varnishes, as shown by Teofilo in chapter 21. In other words, the native, plum-like or home-grown gums, produced by the rose family plants, which contain cerasin and pseudoarabine. See chapter 43.PITTURE E VERNICI - EUROPEAN COATINGS 6/2005

You shall pour it in another pot, then in a second, in a third, in a forth and a fifth one, washing carefully between the steps. Once it has been washed completely, you shall put it in a retort. Hereafter the way of distemper is given. Melt some gum arabic with water in a pot exposing it to the sunshine to liquefy it. Mix as much vinegar as the water and if you havent vinegar, you can replace it with some excellent wine; make it dry in the sun again and boil in a pot with some water; take some moniaculum (23), which you will put in the water: it will dissolve at once floating. Afterwards, put it in the middle of the flame carbons and as soon as it starts heating up you will hear a noise inside, a token of the mercury reaction with the flamed sulphur. When the noise is over, open the flask immediately and extract the colour. 42 - About the salty green - If you want to obtain a green colour take some oak tree pieces of wood of any length and width and carve it to obtain a cavity. Then thin some copper plates, wide as you like but taking care that the length covers the width of the cavity. Afterwards, take a saucer full of salt, compressing it well, put it on the fire and leave it overnight under the charcoal and the day after you shall grind it finely on a dry stone. Take some sprigs and place them in the above said cavity so as to leave empty two thirds above and below the remaining space. Spread the copper leaves on both sides with pure honey and pour some powder salt on it. Put them on the sprigs closing tightly the pot with another piece of wood properly prepared in order not to let the air come out. By a gimlet make a hole on a corner of the piece of wood to make the warmed up vinegar or the urine leak to fill the (lower) third part, then close the aperture immediately. Cover it completely with manure and four weeks later remove the lid, scratch and store whatever you will find on the copper leaves. Then put the lid again and go further in the same way. 43 - About the green of Spain: if you want to make some green of Spain, take a few thin copper leaves, scratch them precisely on both sides, wet them with pure and warm vinegar wihout neither salt nor honey and arrange them in the wood cavity, as it was said before. After two weeks check them and scrape till you obtain a rather good quantity of colour (29). 44 - About ceruse (30) and vermillion (31): to produce the ceruse, start by thinning some lead plates then arrange them in a carved piece of wood, as it was said above, pour some warm vinegar or urine and cover (the pot). A month later remove the lid and scrape whatever is white and go further like in the previous operation. When you need the vermillion, dry grind some ceruse on a stone, putting it in two or three new pots on living carbons; find a thin and bent iron tool, adjusted at one end to a (wood handle) to use sometimes to stir the ceruse. Do this until everythig has become red vermillion. 45 - How to make the ink - to make the ink, cu some thorny wood in April. Collect it making bundles and let them dry in the

Since the cinnabar shows a HgS formula and the Hg shows a p.a. 200, 61 and S 32, 06, that is about as lower as six times, the Hg suggested by Teofilo is greatly in excess, taking into account that the reaction occurs in a sealed container and, therefore, no leaks can occur, neither in the first nor in the second. Maybe he refers to the clay, which acts as an insulator to the glass flask not to crack it. Actually the operation itself occurs later. In fact, Teofilo did not know the Historia naturalis, where Pliny reported the methods used by the Roman people, which were much easier to manu facture the verdigris (salty green and green of Spain). spine (32) in aprile prima che fiori o foglie, raccoglieteli in fasci e lasciateli seccare allombra per tre o quattro settimane fino a che siano abba stanza secchi.

shadow for three or four weeks till they are rather dry. Using a small wood hammer break the thorns on another piece of hard wood till all the bark has been completely removed. Put them in a drum full of water. When two, three, four or five drums have been filled with water and bark, leave them at rest for eight days, till the water has extracted all the bark juice. Put the water in a very clean kettle or boiler, light the fire on it and cook; throw some more bark in the kettle and cook to let all the juice come out. After cooking, remove it and put it in another pot and cook the remaining water till it has decreased by one third. Transfer from the first kettle to a smaller one and cook till it starts darkening getting thicker, taking care not to add more water. When you see it become thicker add a third part of pure wine, and after pouring it in two or three new pots, cook it till you see a sort of skin on the surface. After removing the pots from the fire, put them in the sun to separate the ink from the red liquor (33). Take some small bags of parchement, accurately stitched and some vesicas, pour the pure ink and let them suspend in the sun till they are completely dry. After this operation, take as much of it as you like, distemper it in the wine on the charcoal and, adding a small quantity of black, (from what is said, it seems that it is a coal powder obtained by scraping) and start writing. If, because of negligence it happens that the ink is not black enough, take some of it (coal), being as big as a finger and putting it on the fire, let it warm up and throw it in the ink immediately.32 33

Also with regard to the production of the common ink, the ignorance of Plinys works and of the ink production techniques is clearly shown. It was called niger sutorium or cobblers black and it was an iron and copper tannate, used during the Roman time, certainly much better than the one suggested by Teofilo.
