"Italy in one region ... One of the most intact examples of a balanced and moderatelandscape, as if man provided the design. "With this quote from his “Travels in Italy”from 1957, Guido Piovene expresses exactly what Le Marche is about: plural in name and in soul, they don’t know excess. The balcony-villages embracing therolling hills; the little towns full of history, the snowy mountains, the sea with its warmbeaches and high coasts surrounded by the Mediterranean.Visiting Le Marche means discovering a big museum. "A widespread museum" with aharmonious atmosphere made of history, art and landscape. A place where creativity andwork melted together, are the home of extraordinary success stories. An extraordinary diffusion of culture, nature and environment that always refused the bigmodels of metropolitan concentration, favoring a balanced relationshipbetween the daily life of the normal people and respect for earth and nature.Le Marche gave birth to several famous people: Frederick II, Gentile da Fabriano,Beniamino Gigli, Giacomo Leopardi, Osvaldo Licini, Enrico Mattei, Maria Montessori,Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Padre Matteo Ricci, Gioachino Rossini, Raffaello Sanzio,Gaspare Spontini.Others, without being born in Le Marche, left important marks, electing this regionas their adopted land.Today, statistics indicate Le Marche as the region with the highest longevity, and manyobservers add, where life is good, with a very high quality of life. The history of this region is an exemplary story of responsibility and passion with oneimportant protagonist: the "people of Le Marche", tenacious and generous, alwaysready to offer themselves to the community life.

For those who love snow, winter offers a lot of different kind of sportive and recreation activities such as cross-country and downhill skiing on slopes of different length and degree of difculty, equipped with modern ski lifts climbing the Carpegna and Nerone mountains. The environment is also suitable for more technical disciplines such as skiing-hiking and ski touring.

A close network of little paths creates the ideal way to discover this part of Le Marche by mountain bike, horse ridign or walking, including alternatives for those with physical disabilities.

Equally impressive is the underground world, with speleological routes penetrating into the heart of Le Marche’s Apennines, with the famous Grotte di Frasassi as one of the most signicant examples. But also those who love to practice extreme sports will nd the way to satisfy their need of adventure by nding some of Europe’s most famous places forparagliding, or the mountain streams where one can practice water sports such as canoeing, kayaking and rafting.

The Marche region offers all the ingredients for an exciting journey, full of unique and important discoveries. Fortresses, castles, Romanesque churches, sanctuaries, historical theaters and archaeological sites are just some of the elements composing the Marche’s extraordinary landscape.

Le Marche also offer the opportunity to visit inhabited castles, villas and palaces thanks to a touristic cultural circuit called “Le Marche Segrete” (secret Marche), that enables and enhances the discovery of historical residences and private gardens. The quantity of treasures hidden in each and every single little town or province transformsLe Marche Region to an open air museum.

Precious treasures of this cultural wealth are represented by about a hundred cities of art: one among all, the city of Urbino, one of the most important Renaissance centers of Italy, with its Palazzo Ducale, today transformed into the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche , exhibiting masterpieces of art such as Raffaello, Piero della Francesca, Tiziano and Paolo Uccello.

All provincial capitals are centers of great artistic importance, but also the little towns have their “reason to be”, for example: Recanati, the little “borgo” surrounded by the magic poetry of Giacomo Leopardi, or Loreto with the most impressive Marian sanctuary of Italy, where some of the most important artists of the 14th and 15th century, such as Bramante and Lorenzo Lotto, realized their masterpieces.

The strong attachment to the origins and the revival of tradition are reected in themany historical re-enactments, the most fascinating one is the Quintana in Ascoli Piceno,a typical Renaissance enactment linked to the festivity of the city’s patron saint.

Le Marche’s cultural heritage is extremely various and has a number of precious historical theaters, real architectural jewels decorated with artistic masterpieces that have beenrenovated and returned to use of the community.Le Marche is also characterized by the highest density of museums and art galleries in Italy, added to a rich archaeological heritage of 7 parks and 24 areas, including the Archaeological Park Urbs Salvia, the largest one in the region.

Le Marche is a region where modernity and innovation are mixed with an ancient culture, sediment over the centuries and internalized in the modus operandi, lifestyle, and nal products realized by the regional economic system.A place where the historical connection between culture and civilization of making, art and ingenuity, creativity and craftsmanship, transformed the “Made in Marche” into a globally recognizable system.

This scenario is the perfect place to encounter extremely varied artistic excellence and greatpersonalities, such as Giacomo Leopardi, Raphael, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Gioacchino Rossini, Padre Matteo Ricci and Frederick II, who were born here. There are many cultural events in the region; two of them, internationally known, are related to the opera: The Sferisterio Opera Festival in Macerata, an extremely prestigious opera festival, taking place in the neoclassical arena, and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, entirely dedicated to the famous composer Gioacchino Rossini.

Only a few miles away from the Riviera del Conero, just behind Sirolo, Numana and Marcelli, three of the most famous turistic sea towns in Le Marche, we nd a little town yet famous allover the world for its spritual tourism: Loreto. Visited by millions of tourists and pilgrims for its fundamentalimportance for Christianity, Loreto is also an extremely important source for tourism in Le Marche.

This small town in the province of Ancona is situated on a height of 127m, dominating the Adriatic Sea, between the valleys of the rivers Potenza and Musone. The church and town developed around the shrine of Madonna di Loreto. This Sanctuary enshrines the Madonna’s House of Nazareth, the house where the Virgin Mary was born, lived and received the angelic announcement.

The Holy House of Loreto became a place of Catholic pilgrimage and one of the most important European spiritual and cultural centers, a place of encounter with God and sometimes source of inspiration for new initiatives, for rel igious institutions and movements of the church.

The Pilgrimage , sponsored by the Movement of Communion and Liberation, is apopular act of faith shared by thousands and thousands of people every year, especially young people.During a 26 km’s night walk across the Marche’s sweetest hills, the pilgrims alternate the Rosary prayer with songs and signicant testimonies. The participation of the Holy Father Pope John Paul II in the 1993 walk, is considered to be one of the most important moments of this tradition.

Overlooking the Adriatic Sea in central Italy, Le Marche are distinguished by the diversied landscape, starting from the coast and going into the island, passing through sand beaches and sweet hills dotted with ancient little towns and countryside, arriving at the Apennines mountains covered with forests and tiny paths.

Living in Le Marche is an ongoing discovery experience of a region with many resources and identities, different between them but able to form a unique example of excellence. This story has many possible interpretations with the past and the territorial conformation of this region as common denominator. The sea, the countryside and the mountains are the dominating environments that have also inuenced the economic development, based agriculture, shing and craftsmanship industry.

The rural landscape is witnessing an ancient culture characterized by sharecropping, that inuenced also Le Marche’s socio-economic and cultural system as well as the character of his inhabitants.

Two of the most important agricultural activities are: the production of typical high quality gastronomic products and the viticulture developed throughout theterritory, producing wines representing the excellence of Le Marche both on national and international level.

Le Marche is a fertile land, a legacy of the past renewed in the present throughmany workshops, custodians of ancient crafts, and a small-medium highly specialized industry that characterizes Le Marche’s production system, a system able to produce a perfect mixture between innovation and tradition. This is the winning element of some of the most prominent sectors in the italian industry, showing off a number of leading companies that became an example of the Mady in Italy in the world.

Among these, certainly the footwear industry present allover the provinces of Fermo and Macerata, the furniture industry and mechanical ingegneering in Pesaro; the famous shipbuilding industry in Fano and Ancona, the home appliance industry and paper industry in Fabriano, and furhter the textile industry, clothing industry or the high level produc-tion of leather and accessories.

Le Marche region is a wide-spread popular museum, a trove of art and culture spread throughout the area, a custodian of ancientknowledge and intangible culture rooted in history, a region of little hamlets of extraordinary beauty, where 18 hamlets have been awarded with the title of “most beautiful hamlets in Italy” because of their particolar artistic and historical interest.

But also the nature in Le Marche is a valuable resource preserved in 12 protected areas, characterized by spectacular scenery and rich of elements of an signicant natural and historical-cultural value.

The attention paid to the preservation of this heritage brought the region to various quality awards, including 17 Orange Flags, prestigious banners of the Italian Touring Club to the municipalities that stand out for the protection of cultural heritage and the environment, the culture of hospitality, gastronomic products and the services offered to the tourists.
