City of art and history and candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status, Le Mans has a rich historical heritage dating back more than 7,000 years, that is valued and preserved for future generations: the historical quarter of the Plantagenet City, the Roman wall, the Cathedral of St. Julian, the medieval streets, the Tudor style houses, ... Le Mans is proud of its shared history with the Plantagenet family, Geoffrey V known as Le Bel being the first member of this dynasty. His son Henry II, King of England, was born in Le Mans and made the Comtal Palace a major seat of his realm. It is also within easy access of Paris and the most beautiful sites of the west of France such as the Mont-Saint-Michel or the Loire castles. Automobile capital since the nineteenth century, its mythical 24-Hour race is world famous and was named in 2012 by National Geographic as the number one sporting event in the world, ahead of the Olympics.

Founded in 1229 by Berengaria of Navarra, Richard the Lionheart’s widow, it is one of the most beautiful Cistercian abbeys in France. In 1229, Queen Berengaria decided to found the Piété-Dieu Abbey: the Epau. In 1959, with financial investment by local authorities, the abbey was restored to its former splendour, becoming one of the cultural highlights of the Sarthe and a very moving site to visit. The abbey, located on the outskirts of Le Mans, is almost fully preserved. Set in a 13-hectare walled park.

The Nature Ark: 450 hectares of natural open space, freely accessible to the public at all times

Ten minutes from the heart of the City of Le Mans and accessible by tram, the Nature Ark has provided visitors with a vast natural space for 20 years. The network of paths allows visitors on foot to discover the river, the hedgerows and the forest, providing access to the Aquatic Centre, the Forest Centre and the Prairie Farm. The Aquatic Centre presents the different eco-systems of the river in a series of large aquariums. Discover the riches of the forest (fauna and flora) through interactive and sensory media at the Forest Centre. True breathing spaces for Le Mans, there are gardens everywhere: the Garden of plants and its regular garden said to the French and the landscaped garden said to the English, the park of Tessé, one of the oldest of the city with its giant hourglass, the Allotted-time-Eclipse. But also the Poets’ Gardens, Avenue Rostov-sur-le-Don, the Théodore-Monod park, the Banjan Park, the Ile aux Planches (along the banks of the Sarthe river), the Gourdaine and Tannery gardens, all places that are pleasant for a stroll, relaxing or for children to play.

d motor sportsCreated in 1923, the Le Mans 24 Hours is the world’s biggest endurance race, which is watched by millions of viewers on TV each year and in person by more than 263 500 spectators in 2016.Recognised worldwide as the most difficult challenge in car racing, The Myth of Le Mans is above all a story of men and machines. A real human and technological challenge, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is also a week of festivities and activities, which create the charm and spirit of this event: the drivers parade attracts over 150,000 spectators from all over the world. On the day, more than 160 drivers start the race each year, on the second Saturday in June at 3 pm, for the 13.6 km long circuit. As well as the 56 cars that start this frantic race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a laboratory for innovation and technology that will equip cars around the world.
