The Natural Marine Park of Iroise

Our students in 1ères ES4- Le Likès – Quimper -

have worked with the Marine Park experts in Le Conquet to understand and present

how it works

- special thanks to Marie Hascoët and all the scientists and staff from the Parc Marin de l’Iroise for allowing us to work with

them in their headquarters in Le Conquet- www.parc-marin-iroise.gouv.fr

The Iroise is at the West end of Finistère: Penn ar Bed, «the land’s end of the earth.» The park area covers the islands of Mullein, Sein, Ushant

This area is well-known for its storms, its currents, its legendary sea passages such as Fromveur ... The shore is often rocky with coves and beaches strewn with sea-worn granite rocks. ( kerlouan beach )

This area is also famous for its extremely rich natural heritage: marine algae, fish stocks, ...

A rich biodiversity...

The Natural Marine Park of Iroise :

How to preserve water quality

* Agricultural activity

*Domestic and indusrtrial pollution

* density of maritime traffic* Urbanization

&tourism

Will lead to the spreading of sea-weeds, over-production of toxic phytoplankton and accu-mulation of macro-waste

So how can we ‘protect’ the quality of water ? Track bacteria ------- Collect toxic sea-weed ------- Inform about macro-waste --

We need to study the changes and evolution in the quality of water and we need to recycle those green sea-weeds ....

In the Marine Park of Iroise we can see many lighthouses. The best known are the St Mathieu lighthouse located in Le Conquet near Brest & the Kéréon lighthouse between Ushant (Ouessant) and Mullein (Molène) .

Protect grey seals

The wildlife reserve of Beniguet, is recognized as a nesting site for many protected species. In the Iroise Sea, there are two distinct groups of bottlenose dolphins («tur-siops truncatus»)In the kelp forest we can find many species like: Spider crabs, crabs, pollack, bass and Grey seals. The Iroise shelters a fourth of the French population of French seden-tary mammals as well as many whales passing through.

To preserve a good quality of water

To raise awareness

The surface of the seaweed field of the Molène archipelago is :

- a major indicator for the evalua-tion of the marine environment.

- a socio-economic goal for a community of fishermen.

The natural marine park of Iroise has undertaken to map this ama-zing seaweed field.

Black coral, Antipathes subpinat-ta, a species that had never been observed on the coast of France, was observed for the first time around Ouessant few years ago.
