A swiss born architect who hailed from a watch makers family. The author attributes

this fact to his ideology on town planning where he calls the town as a tool and

house as a machine to live in

    Slums and diseases were rampant.

    The living conditions were pathetic.

    Le Corbusier proposed to

    build from scratch.

    He proposed to run a

    bulldozer over the existing

    city, reserving only a few

    precious historic monuments

and building on a clear site.

This caused a great outcry in the city council and he was termed a barbarian, but he

could not figure out why because for him, that was the only right way to do it.

    1. Decongest city centre, yet increase density by building high.

    2. Drive wide avenues (expressways) through the city centre on both sides of

    which the industrial centres develop

The more dense the population of a city is the less arethe distances that have to be covered.

traffic is increased by: the number of people in a city

the degree to which private transportation is more appealing(clean, fast, convenient, cheap) than public transportation

the average distance people travel per trip

the number of trips people must make each week

Therefore, is that we must increase the density of the

centres of our cities, where business affairs are carriedon.

    CENTRE CITY

All the industrialist, scientist and artist were intended to have offices in the 24 skyscrapers located in the core of the city.

These towers provided work space for 4,00,000 to 6,00,000 people leaving 95 percent

of the ground area open. (Density of 1200 people / acre)

This left 95 percent open ground.

    OUTSIDE CENTRE CITY

Residential areas were planned mainly of two types:

    I. Six storied luxury apartment designed on step back principal (in rows) with 85

    percent ground left open

II. More modest accommodations for workers, built around courtyards on a uniformgrid iron street with 48 percent ground left open.

The city centre had the sky scrapers that held the work places. This place had

all the restaurants, theatres, shopping complexes and other community

    functions.

The residential area was away; surrounded by green belt. There was a

playground in front of each house, where the family could play or exercise

    after work.

    Equal opportunities for all

    residents.

The woman of the house was

given a lot of importance, by the

open kitchen layout and theprovision of domestic help in the

service apartment, as well as the

    delivery of grocery at home.

Alas, the society was not ready for this drastic change in their lifestyle

    For residences, he proposed the

    cells.

    These cells follow anthropometry to

    the letter.

But the people could not accept thisas they were not used to something

    so stark and bare minimum.

They also did not like the fact that

they were being forced to adopt alifestyle of the architects will
