Grand Knight’s Message WGK Jerry Wood
My Dear Brothers, The time is upon
us. In less than
two weeks’ time
the first Mass in
the brand new St. Bernadette
Church building will be
celebrated . As I write this, the
final touches are being added to
the inside and outside of the
building. Fr. Pete indicated that
he would receive the keys to the
new building around the last
week of July, and that week is
now! As you might discern from
these words, I am very excited. I
hope all of you share that
excitement.
The challenge is before us,
Brothers: become involved with
your Council. Some of you
younger Knights have time-
consuming jobs, young families
to care for, and you were
probably concerned with how
you were going to be able to
participate in the Council when
you first joined. I know that I
was—and my children are grown
adults living on opposite sides of
the country with their own
responsibilities. I didn’t want to
become simply a name on a list, whom no one knew.
Participating in the Council doesn’t really require huge
amounts of time. I am including once again—pardon the
repetition—a very simple and really not very demanding
schedule that will help you to become active. You could even
modify the time. Choose those activities, which hold the
most interest for you. The fact remains that we need you.
Just 24 hours can change your life: 8 hours a year working
with your council on charitable projects for your Church or
community; 4 hours a year enjoying a council social function
such as Oktoberfest, the Italian Dinner, a Pancake Breakfast,
etc. with your entire family (all of our events are family
friendly); 4 hours a year attending council meetings to help
plan future activities; 6 hours a year (half hour a month)
reading the Knights’ magazine, Columbia, and visiting the
Knights’ website www.kofc.org--as well as our own:
www.kofc12164.org; 1 hour a year meeting with your Knights
of Columbus insurance agent for a free analysis of your
family’s insurance needs and to learn about our exclusive,
top-rated programs available
only to members and their
families; 1 hour attending Mass
together with your council.
Come, share the activity.
Vivat Jesus!

As many of you already know, Gary Vyctial will be leaving the Parish Staff as of next Friday, June 29th. Gary has been a strong presence in our Council as well as the Parish. He has been a leader in the Council and
has stepped up to chair many of our fund-raising events. He has done an outstanding job of organizing the special Veterans’ Mass for the past several years. Additionally, Gary has been supporting the Parish as a volunteer and/or a staff member for almost ten years. He has been a great blessing to our entire Parish and to the staff. Gary and his wife Mike will be moving to Colorado to be with their son and his children. Please join us in thanking him for his service and wishing him and his family well as he begins the next chapter of his life. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

Saint of the Month
St. Stephan of Hungary St. Stephen the Great (977-1038), was the son of the Magyar
chieftain Geza, Stephen succeeded him as leader in 997.
Already raised a Christian, in 996 he wed the daughter of
Duke Henry II of Bavaria and devoted much of his reign to the
promotion of the Christian faith. He gave his patronage to
Church leaders, helped build churches, and was a proponent
of the rights of the Holy See. Stephen also crushed
the pagan counter reaction to Christianity, forcibly converting
the so-called Black Hungarians after their failed rebellion. In
recognition of his efforts, Stephen was anointed king
of Hungary in 1000, receiving the cross and crown from Pope
Sylvester II. The remainder of his reign was taken up with the
consolidation of the Christian hold on the region. His crown
and regalia became beloved symbols of the Hungarian nation,
and Stephen was venerated as the ideal Christian king.
Canonized in 1083 by Pope St. Gregory VII, he became the
patron saint of Hungary.
Stephen I, also known as King Saint
Stephen (Hungarian: Szent István király; Latin: Sanctus
Stephanus; Slovak: Štefan I. or Štefan Veľký; c. 975 – 15
August 1038 AD), was the last Grand Prince of the
Hungarians between 997 and 1000 or 1001, and the first King
of Hungary from 1000 or 1001 until his death in 1038. The
year of his birth is uncertain, but many details of his life
suggest that he was born in or after 975 in Esztergom. At his
birth, he was given the pagan name Vajk. The date of his
baptism is unknown. He was the only son of Grand
Prince Géza and his wife, Sarolt, who was descended from
the prominent family of the gyulas. Although both of his
parents were baptized, Stephen was the first member of his
family to become a devout Christian. He married Gisela of
Bavaria, a scion of the imperial Ottonian dynasty.
After succeeding his father in 997, Stephen had to fight for
the throne against his relative, Koppány, who was supported
by large numbers of pagan
warriors. He defeated Koppány
mainly with the assistance of
foreign knights,
including Vecelin, Hont and
Pázmány, but also with help from
native lords. He was crowned on
25 December 1000 or 1 January
1001 with a crown sent
by Pope Sylvester II. In a series of wars against semi-
independent tribes and chieftains—including the Black
Hungarians and his uncle, Gyula the Younger—he unified
the Carpathian Basin. He protected the independence of his
kingdom by forcing the invading troops of Conrad II, Holy
Roman Emperor, to withdraw from Hungary in 1030.
Stephen established at least one archbishopric, six bishoprics
and three Benedictine monasteries; thus the Church in
Hungary developed independently of the archbishops of
the Holy Roman Empire. He encouraged the spread of
Christianity with severe punishments for ignoring Christian
customs. His system of local administration was based
on counties organized around fortresses and administered
by royal officials. Hungary, which enjoyed a lasting period of
peace during his reign, became a preferred route for
pilgrims and merchants traveling between Western
Europe and the Holy Land or Constantinople.
He survived all of his children. He died on 15 August 1038 and
was buried in his new basilica, built in Székesfehérvár and
dedicated to the Holy Virgin. His death caused civil wars
which lasted for decades. He was canonized by Pope Gregory
VII, together with his son, Emeric, and Bishop Gerard of
Csanád, in 1083. Stephen is a popular saint in Hungary and
the neighboring territories. In Hungary, his feast day
(celebrated on 20 August) is also a public
holiday commemorating the foundation of the state.

A Founding Notion: Protecting the Breadwinner’s Income
While jobs may be safer in 2016, accidents, injuries, and illnesses that can impact your ability to work still happen. Most, in fact, do not happen on the jobsite or place of employment. Did you know that a 2011 study revealed that more than 95 percent of the long-term disability claims on file were not work related?
The Knights have always sought to protect members’ families from the “loss” of a breadwinner. I’m sure you know all about Father McGivney’s vision for our insurance program. But you may not know that Father McGivney also wanted to find a way to help members who couldn’t work because of an illness. After all, the “loss” of the breadwinner does not have to mean that person’s death; it can also mean the loss of the breadwinner’s income.
Consider that loss for a moment. How would your family fare if a source of income suddenly stopped? Could a dual-income family manage on one income? What about young families with a working father and a mother who cares for the children? What if his income halted due to an accident or illness?
I’ve heard some people say they have coverage at work, but too many aren’t sure what this coverage entails, how much income it would provide or for how long. Having this protection counts for something, certainly, but it isn’t “yours”; it’s provided by the company for which you work at their discretion. It could be eliminated tomorrow.
That’s where a personally-owned disability income insurance product, like Income Armor, comes into play. It can offer valuable income replacement in the event of an injury or illness. If you have a job, you must know about this coverage.
God Bless, "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day
nor the hour." Matthew 25:13
St. Bernadette ushers respond quickly to emergency
Last Saturday (June25, 2016) we had an issue at Mass. An elderly gentleman was having trouble breathing, and his wife was trying to get him out of the church. Tom Munks and Vince Cefalu saw what was happening and went to their aid. We got them to the rear of the church and decided that he needed more help than we could provide, and Tom Wakefield used his cell phone to call 911. Then Ricky (Ric Fichera) went outside to watch for the EMTs and guided them to the church. I think all of these men should be congratulated for doing the right thing: watching and recognizing a situation that needed special attention and taking quick action. Jerry Price

Brothers, our Parish is in need of ushers.
Traditionally, Knights of Columbus have served
as ushers. Indeed, there is a number of
outstanding ushers who are not Knights, but
since the need is profound, I’m encouraging
you to step up and serve as an usher. Do it
once a month at the mass you normally attend.
There are some who serve every Sunday. We
can make a difference. See the note from Jerry
Price on page 4 if you doubt my statement.
There will be training for ushers at 6:30 PM on
August 8th. Contact Gary Vycital in the Parish
Office and sign up!

Food for the Poor Project SK Santo Graziano
Hello all volunteers, Tell A FRIEND: If you have not done
this yet tell a friend and take him or
her on the route and to St Vincent
De Paul. How could they say no
when they see the people that are in
need? Don't forget ask a friend to
ride with you. THANK YOU: The world and nation has been a rocky
place, but all of you, the volunteers, keep bringing hope
to the Phoenix area by helping your brothers and sisters
in this world. We Thank You for helping the VETERANS,
MENTALLY ILL, SINGLE MOMS WITH CHILDREN,
AND REFUGEES FROM WAR TORN LANDS. If we had
more volunteers and more resources, there would be
no homeless person on the streets of Phoenix. We want to THANK Panera (Paradise Bakery),
Starbuck's, Chompie's, Dunkin’ Donuts, and our newest
business to join, Bagels and Bialys. Without
them nothing could be done. Thank them when you pick
up items. All of you have opened up your eyes to the hurting
people around us. We have all left room in our hearts for
compassion to overflow to the people in our community
who are in need. THANK YOU ALL.
