Exquisite Corpse (from the original French term cadavre exquis) or “rotating corpse” is a method by which a collection of words or images is randomly assem-bled by a group of individuals. Each person adds to the composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed. This technique was invented by Surreal-ists and is similar to an old parlour game called Consequences in which players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribu-tion. Surrealism principal founder André Breton claims that this game started as a fun exercise in the mid-1920s. Originally, the process involved a sheet of paper folded into thirds, the top third pages showing the head of a person or animal, the middle third the torso, and the bottom third the legs. Later the game was adapted to drawing and collage and fine art.

Le Calendar Exquis contin-ues creative tradition of blind collaboration, including include Mad Libs and chain letters. Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat famously paired their diametrically differing aesthetic sensibilities on a series of paintings in the early 1980’s. Recently, Draw Something, which utilizes similar collabo-rative call and response, has been the top downloaded app for mobile and tablet users.
