The example of parentsParents simply cannot flirt with skepticismor cynicism, then be surprised when theirchildren expand that flirtation into full-blown romance. If in matters of faith andbelief children are at risk of being swept

downstream by this intellectual current orthat cultural rapid, we as their parents mustbe more certain than ever to hold to anchored,unmistakable moorings clearly recognizable to thoseof our own household. It wont help anyone if we go

over the edge with them, explaining through the roarof the falls all the way down that we really did knowthe Church was true and that the keys of thepriesthood really were lodged there but we justdidnt want to stifle anyones freedom to thinkotherwise.

The example of parentsI think some parents may not understandthat even when they feel secure in their ownminds regarding matters of personaltestimony, they can nevertheless make thatfaith too difficult for their children to

detect. We can be reasonably active,meeting-going Latter-day Saints, but if wedo not live lives of gospel integrity and convey to ourchildren powerful heartfelt convictions regarding thetruthfulness of the Restoration and the divine

guidance of the Church from the First Vision to thisvery hour, then those children may, to our regret butnot surprise, turn out not to be visibly active,meeting-going Latter-day Saints or sometimesanything close to it.

[Josephs] ability to turn everything intosomething good appears to be a godlycharacteristic. Our Heavenly Fatheralways seems able to do this. Everything,

no matter how dire, becomes a victory tothe Lord. Joseph, although a slave andwholly undeserving of this fate, neverthelessremained faithful to the Lord and continued tolive the commandments and made something verygood of his degrading circumstances. People likethis cannot be defeated, because they will notgive up.
