Create a fresh new look in your home

THE holiday’s over, and, while it’s common to feelyou’re suffering from alittle too much partying, there’s another often

overlooked symptom – a decorhangover.

Once you’ve disposed of thatsparkling tree and taken downcolourful cards, even the best ofrooms can look dull and bare bycomparison. Winter’s harsh light canexpose past-their-best colourschemes and furnishings, too.

“Don’t suffer from decordoldrums. Instead, take this as theperfect time to look at rooms afreshand decide whether they really workfor you,” says Clare Nolan, stylistand interiors author, whose newbook, Making A House Your Home, ispacked with inspiration and clevertips to help with a New Year revamp.

“Step away from questions of styleand think about what it is youactually do at home. How do youspend your time?

“Making changes to your home soit fits your lifestyle can be just asimportant as choosing the colour ofthe walls. So, if you love a hobby, youshould be trying to make a spacewhere you can enjoy it or, if youentertain a lot, the dining areashould be a feature.”

To revamp a home, you may onlyneed to re-arrange furniture, whichcould also open up a new area. Byrepositioning artwork, mirrors, rugsand lighting, you can create differentfocal points and change theatmosphere.

“Avoid the knee-jerk reaction ofchucking out and buying new,” saysNolan.

“When relocating things, startwith anything that isn’t workinghard or earning itskeep in its currentposition, but thinkoutside the box.

“A bed quiltcould become achair cover, atablecloth or even awall hanging. Achair could doubleas a bedside table, and a benchtransform into aconsole table. Getcreative!”

RENOVATE ANDREVIVEMakeovers don’t have to be confinedto TV programmes and DIY experts. An old piece of furniture can be

given a facelift easily. “It’sreally quite astonishingjust what a difference paintcan make,” Nolan says.

“An old-fashioned pieceof brown furniture that youwouldn’t look twice at, canbe elevated to perfectly chicwith a couple of coats ofsolid colour.”

STYLIST TRICKS: Youcan paint almost anythingyou love the shape of – thesurface finish and colourwon’t matter. Simply applya specialist primer to suitit, whether plastic, metal or

wood.“Painting and wallpapering a

piece can be truly stylish,” Nolan

says. “You can wallpaper drawerfronts, add a coat of varnish toprotect the finish and paint theframe. Add new handles and youhave an individual, distinctivefeature for little cost.”

COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL“Colour has a huge impact on themood of a home,” says Nolan. “It’s apowerful tool and has the ability tomake your heart sing or sink, sorepainting a few walls could be justthe boost your home and wellbeingneeds for a new year.”

In a small home, she advises usinga palette of tonal colours, which areonly slightly darker or lighter thaneach other, to make the space feelbigger.

STYLIST TRICKS: When you’rechoosing the background colour for aroom, usually the wall paint, consider the amount of light a roomgets.

“If bright light’s the problem, optfor deeper, cooler colours such asblues and greens, and avoid warmcolours,” advises Nolan.

“If you lack natural light, eitherembrace it and create a den-likespace using moody colours, ormaximise the light by painting withlight neutrals and using reflectivefinishes. By contrast, matt surfacesabsorb light and make colour appeardenser and more intense.”

KILL THE CLUTTERDejunking and decluttering can be

painful, says Nolan, but, as well asgiving you space, itwill also allow yourdecorative items tostar and earn theirplace in the home.

“Your mantrashould be ‘use it, loveit, or lose it’,” shesays.

“If you really can’tbear to part withsomething and you’vegot enough storagespace, considerhaving winter andsummer looks. Justpack things away andbring them back into

use when the seasonchanges.”

STYLISTTRICKS: Sacrificinga whole wall tostorage may seemexcessive, but, oncefitted, you’ll wonderhow you ever man-aged without it,says Nolan.

“Don’t overlookthe potential oflighting incupboards.Recessed spotlightsin cabinets andstrip lights undershelves all shedlight just where

you need it,” she says. “Painting theinside of cupboards helps, too – abright, zingy shade can turn it into areal feature.”

CLEVER KITCHENKitchens are the hub of a home,

but they can feel overcrowded andunwelcoming unless there’s carefulplanning.

“If you’re going to use the kitchenas a snug, or informal playroom andTV room as well, furnish it as youwould other rooms,” she advises.

“Bring in decorative elements tosoften its functional kitchen aspects. While lighting needs to be practical, there’s no reason why you can’t havea chandelier or a sculptural floorlamp as well.”

STYLIST TRICKS: A calendarpinned to a wall is fine, but achalkboard wall for notes, lists anddates is more effective and can makea focal point.

“Use blackboard paint to paint thearea you want,” says Nolan. “Yourchalkboard will look much moreimpressive when it’s wall-to-wall andfloor-to-ceiling.”

In a small kitchen, replace wall-hung units with rows of openshelves, which will look lessoverpowering than closed cupboardsand ensure everything is easilyvisible.

“Think outside the box when itcomes to groceries,” she suggests.“Fruit and vegetables make instantlygorgeous displays when stored in

cake stands or piled into clear vases, and even a bunch of herbs can lookas pretty as a bunch of flowers.”

COFFEE TABLE CHICNever overlook the power of thecoffee table, advises Nolan, as it’s oneof the most important pieces in aliving room.

“Everything circulates around itand it’s the equivalent of that otheressential – the kitchen table,” shepoints out.

“But don’t think it has to be a neatsquare or rectangle. It doesn’t evenhave to be a table – a blanket box, trunk or even a few wine cratesscrewed together will work fine.”

STYLIST TRICK: If you have theroom, go for an oversized

upholstered ottoman or largefootstool which can double as extraseating.

“Harden and level out the soft, squishy surfaces of upholsteredcoffee tables with a pile of books oran oversized tray,” she suggests.

“Soften a wooden table with athrow. Fold it so it creates a runnerthat you can lay across the middleand it will have the advantage ofhiding any spills or stains.”

Utilise its decorative potential bygrouping treasured items in clusters, but ensure they’re easily portable bystanding them on a tray.
