LCLS Undulator Systems Review: ChargeLCLS Undulator Systems Review: Charge

To review the LCLS undulator system and to provide advice on the overall system and the various subsystem designs and their suitability to meet the performance specifications, on the installation and commissioning plan, and on the overall project management of the LCLS undulator system.

Commissioning: are the diagnostics “adequate” for commissioning and operations problems? Will we be able to troubleshoot the undulator systems, and rapidly identify out-of-tolerance subsystems?

Gain vs. z is an excellent all-purpose tuning signalSASE gain at long wavelength should not be very difficultSASE gain at short wavelength – beam travels 50m before gain is evidentTo K or not to K?To rollaway or not to rollaway?Intra-undulator x-ray diagnostics are very challenging, not amenable to scheduling

Review and evaluate the complete system design. Is the maturity of the design known to the level of detail to justify setting the cost and schedule performance baseline at this time?

Identify any open design issues that should be addressed prior to setting the baseline.

Is the management team adequately structured for completing the LCLS design?

Are there adequate resources and of the correct skill type to meet the needs of the project? Is the project progressing adequately?
