Hawaiian Gardens Holds Annual Christmas PartyBy Jerry Bernstein

Christmas came early for Hawaiian Gardens youngsters as families gathered at the Hawaiian Gardens Civic Center for the city’s annual Christmas Tree lighting and Christmas Party. This year the city and the Hawaiian Gardens Casino co-sponsored the festivities.

An estimated 2,200 children passed through the C. Robert Lee Recreation Building patiently waited to visit with Santa Claus in the building’s gymnasium that had been converted into a Christmas wonderland where two angles on stilts greeted everyone..

On stage Mayor Mike Gomez wel-comed the city residents. Families waited patiently in ine with their youngsters to visit with Santa Claus and receive a Christmas present from the jolly old elf and his helpers.

Homicide Bureau Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Depart-ment are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy-involved shooting that occurred Thursday morning [Dec. 1] at the 11400 block of Pioneer Boulevard in Norwalk.

Los Cerritos Community News has been told that the victim in the shooting was longtime Norwalk resident Emiliano Amaya.

Investigators have learned at approx-imately 4:50 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deputies assisted Sheriff’s Homicide detectives with the service of a search warrant to locate a murder suspect at the location on Pioneer Boulevard.

The investigation and search warrant was related to the July 31, 2011, homi-cide of Rogelio Sanchez, which occurred less than two blocks from the Amaya home.

Once inside the residence, Special Enforcement Bureau deputies made contact with the 39-year-old Amaya, who according to a statement issued by LASD on Thursday night “suddenly pointed a handgun at them.”

Deputies fired several rounds at Amaya striking him. Amaya died at the scene.

The primary suspect wanted in con-nection with the July 31 homicide of Sanchez, 31-year-old Henry Bahena was taken into custody without incident. was booked at Norwalk Sheriff’s Station for murder and is being held without bail. Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the LASD Media Headquarters said the investiga-tion is “still in the initial stages.” Grubb would not confirm or deny to LCCN that Amaya was indeed the victim of the

It is noon time on a Tuesday morn-ing, and thousands of kids throughout the ABC and Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School district’s head to the lunch line to take part in the daily ritual known as “the school lunch hour.”

Laura Glenn, the Director of Nu-tritional Services for the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District arrives at the Central Kitchen that is housed on the campus of Nettie L. Waite El-ementary School to assess the produc-tion line that will result in the shipping more than 10,000 meals to more than 30 campus locations each and every day around the school calendar.

Glenn glances down at the food that is being prepared by dozens of dedicat-ed school district employees that within hours will be dished out at schools ranging from La Mirada High School to Arturo Sanchez Elementary School in Norwalk.

On the day this interview was con-ducted by Los Cerritos Community News the food preparation staff was busy since sunrise preparing baked chicken (never fried, according to Glenn), mashed potatoes, grapes, a dinner roll as well as a choice of milk (including chocolate) and or fruit juice. In addition to those thousands of lunch

meals, a breakfast menu consisting of cold cereal and crackers, or yogurt and crackers, various pre packaged muffins, per purchased sausage sandwiches, pan dulce’ (Mexican sweet breads) and other “assorted items.”

“A large percentage of our students would not get to have breakfast if we didn’t provide them with morning meals,” Glenn said. “We live in a fast food world,” she says begrudgingly.

During the same day in which LCCN was preparing for this series on “Why are our kids getting so fat?” the California State Department issued a report on Physical Fitness Test results, that listed schools in Norwalk, Artesia and Hawaiian Gardens as having some of the most out of shape kids in the Golden State.

In the areas of aerobic capacity, body composition, abdominal strength, upper body strength, and flexibility, students in NLMUSD and ABCUSD fall well below the passing grades, and some area schools rank near the bottom of the scale for schools here in Los An-geles County.

Childhood obesity is spinning out of control in many areas within the greater Southeast Los Angeles County. Many experts now say the number one issue facing students today is not about getting top grades in Advanced Calculus or being accepted to Harvard or Yale, it’s about seeing if our children

La Palma Approves New Zoning MapBy Larry Caballero

The La Palma City Council approved a Zoning Map Amendment requiring the City to designate sufficient areas within its General Plan Housing Element to per-mit multifamily development at a mini-mum density of 20 units per acre. The action followed a recommendation byLa Palma’s Community Development De-partment Associate Planner Scott Hutter.

Hutter said the Amendment was neces-sary to accommodate new housing units for lower-income households. He said the California Department of Housing and Community Development had already certified the project.

Olympic Chen was elected 2011-12 ABC School Board President by her fel-low Board members at the Board's Dec. 6 annual reorganization meeting. She succeeds Maynard Law. Elected Vice President was Celia Spitzer with Board Member Sophia Tse named Board Clerk.

Boardmember Armin Reyes was originally slated to take over the Board’s Presidency, but announced at the last Board meeting he had been called back to active duty for one year by the Army with deployment in Afghanistan.

In addition to the reorganization, newly-elected Board member Lynda Johnson was sworn in to a two year term, replacing Mark Pulido who re-signed upon being elected to the Cerritos city council.

Board members described Law as the Captain of the Ship who guided them through rough waters and dangerous seas this past year. Law responded his year as President has been the worst of times and the best of times, describing the fiscal storms the district faced, add-ing he had a good board to work with.

Mayor Gomez, who was presenting Law with his Certificate of Recogni-tion commented, “You should have my Board,” at which time the packed room broke into laughter and then applauded the Mayor.

The Angel Tree program provides and delivers gifts of clothing and toys to families with children who are facing financial hardship during the Holidays. This past year alone, more than 1,500 Norwalk elementary school children benefited from the Angel Tree Project.

A 78-year old man was stuck by a car at approximately 7:50 a.m. at the inter-section of La Palma Avenue and Denni Street in La Palma.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was initially treated at the scene and then transported to the Uni-versity of California Irvine Medical Cen-ter where he is currently listed in serious condition, according to La Palma Police Department Sgt. Raul Morales.

Morales told Los Cerritos Com-munity News that the driver of the car involved has not been sited but the “in-

vestigation is still in the early stages.”The intersection along the heav-

ily travelled La Palma Avenue around Denni Street was closed throughout the morning and into the early afternoon and was diverted into local residential neigh-borhoods.

Morales said that La Palma PD responded quickly to the scene and a mobile command site was set up and community volunteers assisted in traffic detail. The area is located to the im-mediate south east of Cerritos Regional Park and west of Luther Elementary School at the Orange and Los Angeles County border.

Lance Cpl Holka is from Harrison Township, Michigan and enlisted in the Marine Corps in March 2010, two months before his high school gradua-tion. He was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class upon graduation for being the company Iron Man of Com-pany F. Following Marine Combat train-ing and Marine Corps Engineer School,

he was assigned to the 1st CEB at Camp Pendleton where he was assigned to lst Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton in June 2011.He was assigned as a squad automatic gunner and then as a Vehicle Mounted Metal Detection (VMMD) driver for 1st Platoon, Mobility Assault Company.

With him is Lance Cpl Shuey. Dur-ing their stay they visited Knott's Berry Farm and saw a performance at the Cer-ritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Hosting the two marines was Doro-thy Owen, President of the Cerritos 1st CEB Adoption Committee. They stayed at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel with meals provided by local restaurants.

The Cerritos City Council approved a bronze sculpture of Mahatma Gandia for a new law office building on the south-west corner of Alondra Boulevard and Carmenita Road.

Assistant City Manager Kathleen Jung Matsumoto said as part of the new building’s approval, the owners, the Chugh Firm, are required to commit one percent t of the total building permit valu-ation in the form of a monetary contribu-tion to the Arts in Public Places Trust Fund or artwork to be placed in the city of an equal value. She said the commit-

ment for the project is $20,518.The location of the proposed artwork

will be installed on the corner of Alon-dra Boulevard and Carminita Road. The Chugh Firm has retained the services of artist Jasu Shilpi of Gujarat, India to cre-ate the sculpture..

Matsumoto said the Fine Arts and Historical Commission reviewed the Art in Public Places proposal and recom-mended approval.

In other business the Council accept-ed a low bid of $26,364. by Studio Wilks of Los Angeles for a graphic design for its direct mail brochures. The estimated amount for the services is $51,830.

Walter Stewart, 49, of La Mirada has been positively identified as the man who died as a result of a self inflicted gunshot wound after a day long standoff at his residence last Friday at 15966 Aleciras Drive.

The day long drama played out in the La Mirada neighborhood that is located next to Los Coyotes Middle School after Stewart began shooting a gun into the air near the campus around 7:23 am Friday morning.

Norwalk Sheriff’s Station deputies received a call about "shots fired" at the location. When deputies arrived they were immediately advised by Stewart’s female roommate that he had shot him-self and that he had a history of suicide attempts.

After deputies arrived, they saw what appeared to be blood outside the resi-dence. They contained the location, sur-rounded the neighborhood and requested Special Weapons and Tactics deputies from the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau to respond.

Norwalk Sheriff's Captain Patrick Maxwell told LCCN that his main con-cern was the "safety of the community" and to determine where the gunman was located.

As a precaution, deputies assisted Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School Dis-trict officials with evacuation nearly 400 students at Los Coyotes Middle School that is located at 14640 Mercado Avenue.

Officials at the Superintendent's Of-fice at NLMUSD told LCCN that the school was placed on a "mandatory lock down" at around 8 a.m. and that no stu-dents or visitors were allowed in or off the campus" until the campus was in-spected by law enforcement.

Maxwell said that students were es-corted "classroom by classroom" through a "safe passage" opposite where the incident was unfolding near the campus and successfully transported the students, faculty and school personnel to the gym at nearby La Mirada Regional Park, at 13810 La Mirada Boulevard.

Numerous requests were made to the barricaded Stewart to exit the house and surrender throughout the ordeal; however he refused to comply with their orders.

Volleys of tear gas were then sent into the location, to no avail. Several times during the standoff, the Stewart fired sev-eral rounds out of the house, the last shot being fired at approximately 12:50 pm. At 4:50 p.m., when the final volley of tear gas failed to get Stewart to exit his residence, members of the Sheriff's De-partment's Special Enforcement Bureau used an Armored Response Vehicle to remove the door of the house and depu-ties entered the location.

Once inside, deputies found Stew-ard’s lifeless body with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered. According to a statement re-leased by the LA Sheriff’s Department Media Bureau, no shots were fired dur-ing the incident.

The City of Hawaiian Gardens today released a statement congratulating IBF Bantamweight World Boxing Champion Abner Mares on his first boxing title defense, a unanimous decision victory over Joseph Agbeko. The fight took place on Saturday, December 3 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. Abner is the City’s first world boxing cham-pion, an honor he previously earned on Saturday, August 13th in Las Vegas.

“The City of Hawaiian Gardens is proud to congratulate Mr. Mares on his victory this past Saturday night. As a true Hawaiian Gardens native, he is a perfect example of what our community espouses to live by; hard work, perse-verance and dedication to success no matter the challenge. Abner Mares has been officially recognized by the City and the Hawai-ian Gardens City Council for his boxing

achievements. The community previ-ously celebrated his title victory during a homecoming event on Sunday, August 21 and the City Council acknowledged him on Tuesday, August 23.

“I am very grateful for the opportu-nity to represent the City and I am proud to have been raised in Hawaiian Gar-dens,” Abner Mares said during those events. “The City and community have always been there for me, and I am hon-ored to make the City proud and have the strong support of the Community.”

Mares is 25 years old and now has an impressive record of 23-0-1, with 13 knockouts. His next IBF Bantamweight title defense has not been announced.

Girl Scout Troop Number 962 of the Buena Park / La Palma Service Unit, as part of the Orange County Council, chose H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday) as a non-profit organization to support.

H.O.P.E. is the local Food Bank in Cypress serving those in need in La

Palma, Cypress, and parts of Buena Park and Anaheim.

Troop 962 recently collected and donated cereal and sugar to help with the Food Bank’s rising costs. In addi-tion, they donated a check for $120 that will go directly to supporting the needy. FREEDOM IN AMERICA Returning books on the Saturday after

Thanksgiving, it was a shock to see a group of three Muslim’s proselyting for Is-lam outside of the entrance to the Cerritos Public Library. At the side near the bicycle rack, there was a well-dressed woman wearing a headscarf, seated by a small table, covered with Islamic pamphlets.

There was also a sign that read, “Save Al Our-An.” A tall man at each side of the table dressed in a dark business suit passed out the printed material, if anyone showed an interest.

I received a pamphlet titled “Concept of God in Islam.” Several pages continued praising, “Allah the Merciful One and Only One.” At the back of the pages there were questions beginning with “Would you like to visit a Mosque? Receive more literature? Or Embrace Islam?

It seemed very inappropriate by the Library and more than disturbed my American Peace of Mind. With permits required for almost anything in the City of Cerritos, I wondered how and where this group obtained one?

Checking with the Library, I was told they had no control of the matter, as it was a Federal affair under the First Amend-ment of our Constitution. The library referred me to the City Clerk who handles permits.

There I was reminded again of our American right of Assembly and Free Speech. However if it was a surprise to learn that a permit is not required in Cer-ritos or elsewhere in the United States. So it is legal for anyone or group to set up a display on public ground, as long as it does not block the flow of traffic.

There are many fine peaceful Mus-lims in America, but for those who want to use our law of freedom to promote the laws of Islam is aggressive and offensive. We must be vigilant about our freedom in America.

My year as the Mayor of the

City of Artesia is ending, and, as I think about transi-tioning back to my role as a Member of the City Council, I have mixed emo-tions. I am proud to

have had the opportunity to serve my constituents as the Mayor during a very difficult economic year, but I am gravely concerned about the state’s financial health and the impact this will continue to have on our city. Our redevelopment agency, our revenues, and our public schools are at risk.

As I began my term as Mayor in December of 2010, I was hopeful that, by this time, you would have seen major upgrades in our downtown area. Our redevelopment agency had approved multi-million dollar projects to improve our downtown with new street lighting, landscaping, and a new parking garage and to improve the Artesia Historical

District with a plaza linking the old Fire Station and the Museum. Alas, Governor Brown proposed to dissolve all city re-development agencies and the legislature agreed.

Subsequently, the League of Califor-nia Cities filed a lawsuit with the Califor-nia Supreme Court, and we are waiting, with all redevelopment agencies, to see if the court rules in our favor, so that we can move forward with projects. If we are forced to dissolve our redevelopment agency, our businesses downtown and our city will continue to struggle with the economic downturn and decreased revenues.

We have had to make cuts in our services and programs, due to the loss of sales tax revenue. Unfortunately, there is no indication that the economy will pick up anytime soon. We will need to consid-er solutions to our revenue problem, and we will need the help of our residents to ensure that we will continue to provide the services and programs they count on.

While I am thankful that we live in the ABC Unified School District, where

our children can attend high-quality schools, California’s public education system is in serious trouble. California’s budget revenues are lower than expected, and this will trigger devastating cuts to public education at all levels. Right now, it is estimated that K-12 education will be cut by $1.4 billion and that the University of California and California State University systems will be cut $100 million each. It will be very difficult to maintain our public schools with these large cuts.

As an Associate Professor at Califor-nia State University, Los Angeles, I have seen how the cuts to our budget have affected my students. Over the past five years, their tuition has doubled! Many of my students are the first in their families to attend a university. They work their way through school, and they have family

responsibilities. Raising their tuition in this way discourages and prevents many from completing their degrees. Because of the budget cuts to our campus, we have had to lay off part-time teachers, which means that we cannot offer all of the classes that students need to graduate, so it will take students even longer to gradu-ate! The quality of public education is of primary concern to Artesia and to all of us. We need to ensure that our kids will be well-educated and successful.

Now is the time to act and to get involved. You need to let us know what your priorities are because we will be fac-ing some very difficult decisions, espe-cially if our revenues continue to dwindle. I conducted four town hall meetings this past year, and I hope more Artesians will come out to find out what is happening in our city and how you can help.

LA MIRADA CRIME SUMMARYNovember 28 - December 4, 2011

Robbery: A robbery was reported on the 15900 block of Heron Ave. Cash was stolen from a male outside of a busi-ness. Aggravated Assault An incident by a known suspect was reported on the 15900 block of Algeciras Dr. This incident resulted in the evacuation of Los Coyotes Middle School's students and faculty to the La Mirada Gymnasium. The City, the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School Dis-trict and the Sheriff's Department worked cooperatively to ensure no students, staff or residents were harmed.

Residential Burglary: Five residential burglaries were reported last week. Two separate incidents were reported on the 15400 block of Ashgrove Dr. Vacant homes were vandalized. Several cameras and other items were stolen from a residence on the 16100 block of Grayville Dr. A burglary reported on the 13000 block of Parise Dr had an unknown loss. Jewelry was taken from a home on the 14700 block of Calpella St.

Vehicle Burglary: Two window smash burglaries were reported last week. A theft occurred on the 16100 block of Summer-shade Dr. Various items were taken. An incident was also reported on the 16100 block of Orsa Dr.

Grand Theft: A grand theft was re-ported from the 14200 block of Firestone Blvd. A backpack containing currency was stolen after being left unattended. Two separate thefts of laptop computers were reported on the 13800 block of Biola Ave.

Grand Theft Vehicle: A theft of a loaded cargo truck was reported on the 16300 block of Phoebe Ave. The truck and cargo was recovered a short time later. Deputies recovered a vehicle stolen from Buena Park after it was spotted at Imperial Hwy. and La Mirada Blvd. One suspect was taken into custody. Report Solicitors in your Neighborhood The La Mirada Public Safety Team has received reports of solicitors who are going door to door in the community selling products without a City issued permit. Some solicitors use their position as door-to-door salespersons in order to commit crimes. Additionally, some solicitors seek money for products that they won't deliver. CERRITOS CRIME SUMMARYNovember 14-20, 2011

Cerritos Sheriff’s Station logged 17 Part I felony investigations last week, down from 28 the previous week. Rob-beries and vehicle burglaries were down, while residential and commercial burglar-ies, along with vehicle thefts declined. There were 242 calls for service last week, down from 255. The 2011 weekly average in that category is 271.

GREAT NEWS! There were no robberies reported to Cerritos Station last week.

Residential burglaries remained the same at three last week. Two of the crimes were due to open/unlocked doors or win-dows, and the third case had a pried win-dow. Laptop computers, jewelry, cash, and cell phones were taken. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries is 4.0

Prying a side garage door is much more difficult if it is of solid core construc-tion (wood or metal) and equipped with a strong deadbolt lock. This deadbolt should extend well into the frame to ensure the

security of the door. Most of the residences in Cer-ritos had a regular single cylinder knob lock installed at the time the home was constructed. Take a look at yours. If you do not have a solid core door with a good deadbolt, it is time to update.

Commercial burglaries also remained the same at three last week. A condo storage unit, a school, and a fitness center locker were targeted. Items reported stolen included computers, cell phones, ID, a TV, and a vacuum cleaner. The 2011 weekly average in commercial/“other structure” burglaries is 2.9.

Vehicle burglaries dropped from 11 to five last week. Three were from high-volume commercial parking lots, and all five were SUVs. Property reported stolen consisted of CDs, sunglasses, purses, wallets, clothes, and third-row seats. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries remained at 6.7.

All of the vehicles involved in the vehicle bur-glaries last week were SUVs. It is common knowl-edge that vans, pick-ups, and SUVs do not have a secure trunk space; therefore the owners will leave valuable items inside the passenger compartment. Keep this in mind if you drive one of these vehicles, and make sure that you do not leave anything of value inside.

Vehicle thefts remained unchanged at six last week. Five were taken from high-volume commer-cial parking lots. Two SUVs, two Hondas, a Nis-san, and a commercial trailer were stolen. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 3.2.

Assemblymember Greets Supporters With 'Mixed Emotions'By Larry Caballero

Assemblymem-ber Tony Mendoza greeted supporters Nov. 7 at his An-nual Open House and Toy Drive at his district office where he said that he had “mixed emotions because this will be

my last Open House, and it feels kind of strange.”

Because of term limits, Mendoza is termed out of office at the end of next year.

Mendoza told supporters that “it’s been a lot of work being in the assem-bly, and I have tried to be as visible as possible in the district, and I took tough votes that didn’t always please the Leadership in Sacramento.”

One vote was to oppose the abol-ishing of redevelopment agencies that Leadership had supported to bring ad-ditional revenue to the state. “You can count on me to do what I think is right for the cities that I represent,” said Men-doza.

He also voiced concerns that there will be severe program cuts next year because of reduced revenue that will harm residents, and “even deeper cuts after that if the economy doesn’t im-prove.”

Norwalk Sheriff's Station is seeking the public's assistance in identifying a male Hispanic in connection with a sto-len vehicle incident. If you were to ask him what he plans to do in the immediate future, now that he will be termed out, he will say that he is preparing for his next campaign. Unfortunately for Mendoza, his next campaign isn’t until 2014 when State Senator Ron Calderon is termed out.

As any elected official will tell you, two years is an eternity in politics. Since he will not be holding an elected office when he runs in 2014, Mendoza may have a difficult time raising campaign funds.

He may also have problems garnish-ing much support from Democratic leaders in Sacramento since he had is-sues with all three of the Speakers of the Assembly who interacted with him in the five years he has been in the state legislature.

Consequently, he never held a chair-manship for more than a few weeks before Speaker Karen Bass took it away from him after he had “paid to play” for a tidy sum of $70,000 to the Speaker’s coffers. Bass had requested at least that much in order to support Democratic candidates in other campaigns.

Even though Mendoza is the Chair of the Latino Caucus, a position that is not officially recognized by the Rules Committee, Speaker John Perez has not been kind to him by significantly cut-ting his office budget and removing him from important legislative committees.

Mendoza has also had difficulty retaining staff in his local office and in Sacramento where numerous staffers have either been terminated or left with nothing good to say about him.

AAUW Hosts Scholarship Fundraiser

La Palma-Cerritos American Asso-ciation of University Women (AAUW) held their Third Annual Scholarship Fundraiser entitled “Some Like It Hot” at the Lakewood Country Club Nov. 5 to provide up to $6,000 to Cerritos College graduates who plan to attend a four-year institution.

More than 180 members and guests enjoyed a day of good food, a fashion show with both children and adult mod-els wearing the latest styles for the holi-days and for the new year from Rascals to Rebels, Quiksilver and Chico’s, and an opportunity to win raffle and door prizes and bid on numerous Silent Auc-tion items.

Former AAUW President and cur-rent Public Policy Chair Thea Siegel-said, “Each year this event gets bigger and better. I want to thank everyone for coming and supporting such a worthy cause.”

AAUW is an advocate and visible leader in equity and education through research, philanthropy, and measurable change in critical areas impacting the lives of women and girls.

Los Angeles County’s top health official Dr. Jonathan Fielding, MD, who is the Director of Public Health said that “the continuing epidemic of childhood obesity is jeopardizing the future health and well being of our chil-dren.”

Fielding also said that “childhood obesity is both a national and local cri-sis.”

He pointed to a recent study that backs up his claim conducted by the Office of Health Assessment and Epi-demiology from LA County that now confirms that one in five of 5th, 7th and 9th graders are now obese, and,

the results are even more devastating for those same students in those three grades that were tested in Hawaiian Gardens, Artesia and Norwalk.

According to the study, Hawaiian Gardens, student’s rank 124th out of 128 incorporated municipalities in LA County for obesity prevalence. The children of Norwalk came in 104th in the study and if you’re a 5th, 7th or 9th grader in Norwalk you weighed in at number #80 on the list.

Students in Monrovia, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Beverly Hills, and San Marino have to most “in shape students” in those three grade levels. Cerritos students ranked 33 on the list.

The only areas to rank lower than Hawaiian Gardens were the middle grade students in Irwindale, West Car-son and Maywood.

The 59-year-old long time resident of Norwalk, who goes by the nickname of “Mom” to several of her friends, neigh-bors and former co-workers called the event “pure horror.”

“They shot my son, they shot my son,” Amaya said.

Henry Bahnea, had been staying with the Amaya family for the past “several months,” according to both Amaya and her daughter Stephanie, age 28. “We had no idea that Henry (Bahena) was wanted

for murder, and trust me, if we would have known, he wouldn’t be allowed near our home, let alone be staying here,” Amaya said.

The Amaya household has nearly 10 family members who live in the home that includes sons Emiliano, 39, son Da-vid, 38, daughter Gloria, 21, and son Jo-seph, 21. Also living at the home is four young children under the age of seven, including a toddler.

Bahena was taken into custody with-out incident. He was booked at Norwalk Sheriff’s Station for murder and is being held without bail.”

yard, other youngsters were having fun playing in the two truckloads of snow that was brought in that afternoon. Some were busy making a snowman and others were sledding on a snow slide made by staff. For many it was the first time they had seen snow.

The Cerritos College Foundation awarded three automotive scholarships to six promising students at its board meeting Thursday, November 17.

The Jeannie M.T. Yang Scholarship, a $500 award was presented to Emerson Hemedes of Whittier and Joseph Park of Victorville. The Jeannie M.T. Yang Automotive Scholarship awards a total of $2,000 each year to four promising students in the automotive department at Cerritos College. Established in memory of Dr. Jeannie M.T. Yang, a community college professor originally from mainland China, who had a great passion for education.

Emerson Hemedes has always had a passion for cars and currently works at the Sears Auto Center in Brea. He plans on working as an automotive technician while pursuing his bachelor's degree in journalism. His ultimate goal is to become an automotive journalist.

Joseph Park has already earned his bachelor's degree in public administration and is a transportation officer in the Army Reserves. He is pursuing another degree in automotive repair to increase his skill set, advance in the military, and pursue a career with the Bureau of Automotive Repairs.

The SMCDA Automotive Technology Scholarship, a $500 tool voucher toward the purchase of MATCO tools was received by Yosias Alfaro of Bellflower, Zane Mortensen

of Fullerton, and Eddie Ornelas of South Gate. This scholarship was designed to assist the college's automotive apprentice program students in purchasing tools to use in their classes. The tool voucher, combined with the 50% tool discount program which MATCO also provides for Cerritos College automotive students, is actually worth $1,000.

Yosias Alfaro has always loved a challenge. He is a father of two young boys, works full-time and attends classes at night. He will be earning a certificate in engine performance and diagnostics at the end of this semester and completing his associate degree in automotive technology next semester. Yosias is currently working at Page One Automotive as an inspector and driver.

Zane Mortensen is currently enrolled in his first semester of Chrysler's College Automotive Program and is working toward his associate degree in automotive technology. He currently works at Don-a-Vee Chrysler Jeep and was quickly promoted from porter to technician due to his outstanding attitude and performance on the job.

Eddie Ornelas began taking automotive classes last spring. He is currently employed as an auto technician at Wal-Mart and looks forward to transferring to Northwood University to pursue his bachelor's degree.

SMCDA also presented the $750 SMCDA Northwood 3rd Year Scholarship to Richard Salazar of Santa Fe Springs. This award assists Cerritos College students who have completed their first two years in automotive technology training and are pursuing their bachelor's degree through Northwood University.

Richard Salazar will soon be completing his second semester as an automotive technology major. Once he completes his associate degree, he will be transferring to Northwood University to pursue a bachelor's degree in automotive marketing & entrepreneurship.

"These outstanding students will be great assets to the auto industry," said Todd Leutheuser, executive director of the Southland Motor Car Dealers Association (SMCDA), as he presented each student with the scholarship. "It is exciting and truly inspiring to see these dedicated students work hard towards their career goals."

The Southland Motor Car Dealers Association represents franchised new car dealers throughout Southern Los Angeles County.

Cerritos College's Auto Technology Program provides students with hands-on, nationally authorized training for GM, Ford, Chrysler and import vehicles. The College also hosts an Advanced Transportation Technology Center, one of nine Centers in the state of California, to encourage use and development of clean, renewable energies, and alternative fuel sources. Students can also earn a bachelor's degree in automotive management at Cerritos College through an agreement the college has with Northwood University.

and yelled LA County Sherriff’s, search warrant, everyone down,” she claims.

She said that her son and Bahena came out of the bedroom where they were sleeping and entered the kitchen area at the rear of the large home when one member of the search party “pointed a gun at Emiliano” and “just started to fire.” She also claims that Henry Bahena threw “himself” on top of her son “while he was being shot” and that is when she started to scream hysterically “the shot my son, they shot my Nano.”

Marian said that Bahena was arrested inside the kitchen after the shooting. “It was surreal, and my son’s blood was ev-erywhere,” she exclaimed.

Bahena, who according to arrest re-cords is being held at Men’s Central Jail in Downtown Los Angeles, and is expect-ed to appear in Bellflower Court at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, December 16 at 8:30 a.m. He is being held without a bail amount due to the fact that it is a murder charge in which he is facing.

Los Cerritos Community News has also learned that Bahena was arrested in Norwalk on October 24 shortly after mid-night and was arrested on felony charges. During that arrest, Sheriff’s authorities confirmed to LCCN that Bahena had a concealed weapon in his possession and that he was also had prior felony convic-tions. He posted a $35,000 bail hours after he was arrested and appeared in Bellflower Superior Court on October 26, according to information provided by the LASD.

“My son wasn’t wanted for anything, and he didn’t deserve to get shot three times in our kitchen in the middle of the

night,” Marian Amaya said. The mother also told Los Cerritos Community News that her son “didn’t have anything in his hands” and that the only weapon in the house was a rusty “40 year old part of a gun” that she claims was found “buried deep inside a hall closet.”

Both mother and daughter Stephanie told LCCN that they did not have “any idea” that Bahena had been recently ar-rested in Norwalk and did not have “spe-cific any knowledge” about his “back-ground or past.”

Each of the members of the fam-ily were escorted out of the home, most in handcuffs, and placed in the back of Sheriff’s cars, she said. “They handcuffed me, and put me in the back of the squad car for almost three hours.” Marian Ama-ya also said that she had a “gut instinct” that her shot was dead from the gun shots because ambulances that had been dis-patched to her Pioneer Boulevard stayed outside. They said that law enforcement was at their home for “nearly 10 hours.”

Marian Amaya said her son grew up in Norwalk “his entire life” and was a graduate of Santa Fe High School in the Class of 1991.

She said Emiliano was a standout wrestler in high school and competed in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championship’s three years. “He one of the smallest kids on the team, he only weighed 119 pounds in high school, and was the light of my life,” the mother recalled.

“He would give his shirt off his back to help someone in need,” she said. Emiliano also has an “average student” in high school that “struggled with his grades,” but “proudly graduated when

most would have quit school. According to family members,

Emiliano lost his first son just 13 days after he was born due to a rare medical condition. His mother said he also has a second son who has “severe learning and processing disabilities” who is now 16 years old, who lives with other fam-ily members outside of Norwalk. “How do you tell a child that his father is gone when he has such developmental issues, this is going to be devastating for him if he will be able to even comprehend the situation,” she said.

The family is in the process of raising funds to pay for the expenses for the fu-neral, and have had a “great outpouring” of support from close family friends “and others in the community.”

“We need to rethink how we can get our children moving on campus each and every day,” asserted Glenn to Los Cerritos Community News for this se-ries. She also said that parents need to get more actively involved in the diets of their children, learn healthy eating habits, avoid “fast food” places to eat, and to “pull the computer games out of our kids hands, and make them walk for at least 20 minutes each and every day.”

On a national level, more than one-third of adults, (72 million people) and 17% of our children are now obese, ac-cording to the Center for Disease Con-trol out of Atlanta.

Alexander Khananshili, a world re-nowned expert of obesity is now focus-ing his efforts on behalf of Tri-Cities Medical Center in Hawaiian Gardens. Khananshili, an expert on nutrition is alarmed that during 1980 to 2008 obe-sity rates doubled for adults and tripled for children. He is especially alarmed with the number of obese children un-der the age of 18 who live in Hawaiian Gardens.

“It is real simple, obesity is out of control,” he told LCCN in a sit down interview on Thursday.

“It is going to take an all out effort between our local elected city coun-cil members, school board members, school administration and city adminis-trators to declare obesity what it is, out of control,” Khananshili said.

LADY LANCERS WIN SCHOOL’S SECOND PRESEASON TOURNAMENT, ROLL PAST PARAMOUNT

WHITTIER-For the past four sea-sons, the first week of the regular season had found the Norwalk girls basketball team in the Downey Tournament. But this season, head coach Richard Drake decided to try something new and it paid off.

The Lady Lancers went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter, then began the fourth quarter on another 13-0 run as they dismantled Paramount 64-33 in the championship game of the Pioneer Tour-nament last Saturday night. It marked the second time in school history, both times under Drake’s watch, that the pro-gram has won a preseason tournament. In Drake’s first season as head coach, Norwalk took home the championship of the Downey Tournament.

Following the contest, there were plenty of cheers from the players as well as parents and friends, who cascaded from the bleachers to take photos of the team. But when Drake told the team in his postgame meeting that it was ranked first in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III-AAA rankings according to Max-Preps.com, the girls showed no emotion. That’s probably because the team had a chance to blow out the Pirates early in the second half. But Drake pointed out that the third quarter was the typical, ‘let the air out of the balloon’ syndrome. Norwalk scored nine points in the third

quarter but turned a 43-26 lead into a 57-26 rout late in the fourth quarter.

“This was a goal,” Drake said. “Just like I do my preseason stuff to lead into the Suburban League season, I picked this tournament to get us going. We needed this to build confidence to go into a tougher tournament next week. I fully expect to be in no less than the semifinals next week.”

The Lady Lancers began the Glenn/Norwalk Tournament this past Wednes-day against Pioneer but last Saturday, they set the tone early by scoring 19 points in the first quarter behind half a dozen points from junior guard Cristina Batarse, who ended up with a career-high 11 points.

After Paramount’s Kyla Hayman scored the first points of the second quarter, Norwalk went on a 9-0 run to lead by 20 points, which would be its halftime margin. But the third quarter was the bugaboo for the team that’s favored to challenge Mayfair for a Suburban League title. Norwalk shot one of 10 from the field and missed 11 free throws in the stanza as that 20-point lead could not get greater than 23 points until the final quarter.

“They haven’t learned how to [put away teams] yet,” Drake said. “Half of this team is last year’s junior varsity team which won the [league] champion-ship. But at this level, it’s a little harder. I think they will learn how to do that. I

think it takes time to learn how to do all of this.”

As bad as the third quarter was, the fourth was as good as it can get. The Lady Lancers missed three of 11 shots from the field and got contributions from virtually everyone on their ros-ter. Senior center Nia Lateju, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, finished with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals. Senior point guard Larissa Perez, who was named to the all-tournament team, added nine points, five assists and five steals while junior forward Jazzlyn Gaxiola came off the bench to score eight points and pull down three rebounds.

In addition to not putting away Para-mount much sooner, the other negative was the free throw shooting where the Lady Lancers connected on 12 of 29 charity shots.

“That’s a mental thing,” Drake said. “I tell them they have to block every-thing out. They have to just physically block it out and do their thing. Right now there are too many distractions.”

Norwalk began the tournament on Nov. 28 with a 50-32 win against Bell Gardens behind a career-high 21 points from Lateju and nine from Batarse. The next day, Norwalk crushed El Rancho 56-28 with Lateju scoring 12 points. The third game was a 48-27 decision over Gabrielino as Lateju scored 13 points followed by 10 from junior for-ward Maiya Griffin-McNair.

But the key to the early success has been on the defensive side where the Lady Lancers had 81 steals in the four games, paced by Griffin-McNair (18), Batarse (13), Lateju (11) and Perez (10).

“This team is going to win or lose according to our defense,” Drake said. “The defense is going to make this offense come to life. That’s what I’m counting on.”

John Glenn was also in the tour-nament and didn’t fare too well last Saturday, falling to El Rancho 39-26 in the third place game. El Rancho scored the first 12 points of the game and the Lady Eagles didn’t score until the 2:05 mark of the opening quarter when senior Moshannae Summerise put back an offensive rebound. Glenn then went another 6:20 before scoring again. After senior Kimberly Orozco, who was

named to the all-tournament team, and sophomore Myra Gomez opened the second half with back to back baskets, Glenn went scoreless for the final 6:08 of the third quarter. Orozco led Glenn with 10 points while Summerise added half a dozen.

Glenn knocked off Pioneer 38-25 on the first day of the tournament as Summerise scored a career-high 17 points and Gomez another 10. The next day, Glenn fell to Paramount 35-32 with Summerise scoring 14 points. The biggest win for Glenn came on Nov. 30 as junior Angie Console, senior Patty Santana and Summerise all scored nine points in a 38-22 victory over Alhambra.

Offensive Player of the Year-Records continue to be broken at Gahr and the Gladiators will surely miss senior wide receiver Dwayne Washington, who leaves as the school’s all-time single season touchdown leader. Washington found the end zone 15 times and caught 66 passes for 1,338 yards.

Defensive Player of the Year-Valley Christian’s defense may have allowed 33 points a game but that didn’t stop senior linebacker David Coley from having a solid season. Coley was second on the team with 68 tackles, tied for first with five sacks and had a pair of interceptions.

Coach of the Year-Last season, Val-ley Christian’s Erick Streelman missed the playoffs for the first time in his five seasons at his alma mater. But he rebounded from starts of 0-4 and 1-5 to advance to the postseason and guided his team to a 4-7 record which included a chance to win the Olympic League title on V.C.’s last regular season game.

Player of the Year-Cerritos senior Susan Suski became the latest Lady Don to win this award after she helped guide the team to at least a share of its third straight Suburban League champion-ship. Suski was one of four seniors on the team as the program will continue its league dominance.

Coach of the Year-Norwalk’s 7-9 record may not seem all that impressive but the only thing that matters is going to the playoffs and that’s what Quoc Nguyen accomplished. In just his sec-ond season at Norwalk, Nguyen put the Lady Lancers in the playoffs for the first time since 2005 and rebounded from a 2010 campaign that saw the team win only one match.

Local Students Win County Library

Bookmark ContestFour local students were among

the winners in the Los Angeles Coun-ty Public Bookmark Contest held by the Artesia Library.

Children of all ages competed to design the best bookmarks. Local judges Susan Tinkler and Joan Pyl-man selected winners from over 300 entries. Winners included Azalea Han, First Grade at Kennedy Elementary School; Jordan Hilado, Fourth Grade at Kennedy Elementary School; Seon Gyoo Lee, Eighth Grade at Our Lady of Fatima School, and Palak Oberoi in Ninth Grade at Gahr High School.

The four will enter a regional contest and the winners from this competition will be announced during February 2012. Winning bookmark designs will be printed by Pentel of America, Ltd., and will be available at Los Angeles County Libraries during National Library Week in April 2012.

The 7822 Denni Street property, which is identified in the inventory of available residential housing sites, was considered inadequate given its very linear shape and smaller size.

Hutter said the only other sites in the City that were similar in size would be 7601 and 7621 Walker Street, which are surrounded by single-family properties and a development at 20 units per acre would not transition well at this location. “The two properties at 5052 and 5062 La Palma Avenue on the other hand work much better given the difference in the type and intensities of surrounding uses,”

Councilmember Hwangbo was not so sure. “What is the sense of urgency?’ he asked. Hwangbo was concerned that the developers could choose to build up to 15 units on the sites.

Hutter explained that if the Resolution were not approved, the City could face sanctions from the Department of Hous-ing and be ineligible for housing funding in the future. “Litigation from watch dog groups is also a consideration.”

Hwangbo said he still had a problem with it because it would allow multi-rent-al properties in the center of the City.

Councilmember Mark Waldman said he would vote to adopt the Resolution and said, “I believe localities should control their own land use.”

Mayor Ralph Rodriguez said that it was better to be proactive and felt the Res-olution “would meet our housing needs.”

The Resolution was passed on a 4-1 vote with Hwangbo voting the lone no vote.

The National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) recently presented the City of Cerritos with a First Place Award for a video highlighting the award-winning Cer-ritos Library.

The program, “Cerritos Library: Experience America’s Best Public Library,” received the Government Programming First Place Award in the Library Video category. The video can be viewed on the City’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/CityofCerritos. The pro-gram also airs on Cerritos TV3, the City’s government access cable television channel.

The Government Programming Awards recognize excellence in broadcast, cable, multimedia and electronic programming produced by local government agencies.
